The Study Of Gynecology
 Definition – Branch of
  medicine specializing in
  the diagnosis and
  treatment of conditions
  of the female
  reproductive system.
 A physician of this
  medical specialty is
  called a gynecologist.
The Reproductive System
 The reproductive system is vital to the continuation of
  existence of the human race.
 Produces ova, which are reproductive cells, and
provides a place for a healthy pregnancy to occur.
 The breasts are used to feed the newborn after
  delivery.
 Also then secretes the female sex hormones.
Internal Genitalia
 The internal genitalia consists of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the uterus, and the
  vagina.
 There are two ovaries on each side of the uterus. They produce ova and the sex
  hormones.
 Maturation of ova are stimulated by follicle stimulating hormones and
luteinizing hormone. Thus ovulation occurs, where ovum is released.
 The sex hormones are produced are estrogen and progesterone, which stimulate
the uterus to prepare for the fertilized ovum.
Internal Genitalia, Continued…

 The fimbriae is the part of the fallopian tube that catch
the ovum after ovulation and directs into the fallopian
tube. Then into the uterus for implantation. Conception
occurs in the upper half of the fallopian tubes.
 The uterus consists of the fundus, corpus, and the cervix.
The uterus is where the baby grows and is delivered out of
   the vagina.
External Genitalia

 The vulva consists of the labia majora, labia minora,
  clitoris, and perineum.
 The two labia are used as protection for the genitalia.
 The clitoris is a sensitive arousing tissue alike the male
  penis.
 The perineum is the region between the vaginal opening
  and the anus.
The Stages of Labor & Delivery
The Dilation Stage
                 During the dilation
                  stage, the uterine muscle
                  contracts to expel the
                  fetus.
 The fetus presses on the
                  cervix and causes it to
                  expand to 10 cm. when
                  the second stage begins.
The Expulsion Stage
 This is the birth of the
                 baby stage.
                Usually crowning occurs
                 when the head is
                 delivered first.
 Rarely the baby will be
                 flipped and delivered as
                 a breech presentation.
The Placental Stage

 The placenta is expelled through the vagina.
 Expulsion is achieved as the uterus continues
    to contract.
