The Reflection Paper

Write a brief paper (2-3 pages) discussing your predictions for your child in their preschool
and schoolage years on the areas of health, development, and behaviour. Validate your
predictions with concrete and acknowledged information regarding child development.

In his preschool years, Krishna will be an energetic, curious child who is friendly and

eager to please. Health concerns that may arise stem from Krishna’s premature birth. His lack of

nutrition during the early stages of life as well as the missed three weeks of physical and mental

development that he would have experienced in the womb combined with the distress in the

womb raise underlying health issues that could possibly effect Krishna in the future.

(http://www.marchofdimes.com/aboutus/791_7361.asp). The other aspects of Krishna’s

upbringing were very normal. He was found to be a normal child in all of the tests that were

done. During his preschool years I predict that he will have some difficulty sharing his toys and

interacting with other children since one of the tests done at preschool showed that he had

difficulty interacting with children his own age. I feel that with continuous exposure to other

children, Krishna will overcome his challenges. This is important for him to face because normal

social interaction is very important for children as they grow up in order for them to learn social

skills during their crucial developmental phases.

If we do not discipline Krishna with clear and consistent punishment, he will continue to

think that he can have whatever he wants and do whatever he wants. In order to teach him

discipline before he goes to preschool, we will have to take the advice of the preschool specialist

and really try to be firm with Krishna (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/child/preschoolers.htm).

Also, I predict that Krishna will have very good verbal development as he attends preschool. His

verbal assessment was normal but at such a crucial social period in his life, the specialist had
mentioned that we should encourage Krishna to speak more and ask him questions constantly

that involve long answers. With our guidance at home and his continual listening to the speech of

other children and adults around him, I predict that Krishna will have excellent verbal skills.

Regarding the dangers of exploring on his own, I believe that Krishna will very curious

as he already wants to touch everything and wander off without me. However, I have also

discovered that he remembers when something is not good for him and he stays away from that

situation. When he was visiting a neighbour’s house, he was scratched by the neighbour’s cat

and since then refused to visit the neighbour’s house. This shows memory skills and the self

control to stay out of situations that he had previously found dangerous. We do need to teach him

that certain situations are not safe for him before he tests them out himself. As his fear of

strangers fades away, the risk of him talking to strangers’ increases. Also, dangerous situations

like playing in the street have to be instilled in his mind so that he does not try to do them.

As he becomes more and more private with certain things, I need to ensure that we have a

good and trusting line of communication so that he feels that he can tell me anything. This way,

he may ask for advice or tell me if something is wrong. Regarding his health, Krishna may have

had a slow start regarding nutrition and that may have affected his immune system. Although any

problems may have corrected themselves and the doctor has said that Krishna is healthy, he may

pick up diseases from other children quickly or often.

During his school years, Krishna will become more and more secretive so I hope to keep

open lines of communication and have plenty of family time so he feels like his parents support

him. He will love to talk all the time, with us as well as with his friends and with new people in
his life. His language skills were average early on but with our constant speaking at home and his

cousin Melody present to add to the dialogue, we ensured that Krishna was well communicated

with. I will continue to teach him the difference between right and wrong and the proper way to

treat people and animals. Because of his scare with the neighbour’s cat early on, Krishna may

grow to either hate animals or fear them and this may hold him back from learning and from

feeling care and sympathy. We will perhaps get a family pet to show Krishna animals can be

great companions and can teach him to take care of something.

In order to help his mental and cognitive development, we will challenge Krishna to be

involved in many different activities and clubs so that he experiences a variety of different things

and learns social skills as well as perfecting his motor skills at the same time. This will also keep

him active and help him stay out of negative situations.

I predict that Krishna will be a very normal preschooler and school aged child. Although

he had a few health issues and very small developmental issues, with the right amount of

attention and social outlets, Krishna will grow to be a well rounded and normally developed

individual.
