The Purge opening
scene
The very first screen shown in the opening sequence of the purge is a dark basic blank picture with the company
which made the film. The dark colour gives the audience a first impression about the film, they find out that it is an
adult film aimed at an older audience rather than other audiences e.g. children. However the audience are still kept
in the dark as they still have no idea on what is going on.
The next screen which follows the first one shows a CCTV like footage of a violent gun shot scene. During the scene
there is only non-diegetic sound splaying, there is an upbeat theme tune type music in playing tin the background,
this is a complete contrast to what is going on in the gun crime scene, it makes the audience feel quite eerie and
makes them uncomfortable watching the clip.
The following scene is a very violent scene, more than the previous ones. It is still CCTV footage and it shows a gang
of people shooting at each over. At the bottom left of the screen features a text watermark saying “PURGE FEED”,
this makes the audience question the film as they think if this is what the purge is like. The scene is dark and poor
quality footage like the other scenes featured, this would make the audience more tense as it looks like it is real
footage and not fake it would make them more gripped into the film too. The date featured on the watermark is set
in the future when the film was released, this could make the audience scared as they know that this can happen.
The following scene automatically makes the audience distressful, it features a woman who is crouching over in
blood looking like she is in pain. It adds to the mise-en-scene giving an eerily vibe and adding dramatic tension to
the audience, yet with this the audience still do not know the actual title of the film or even what these clips mean
and how they relate to the film
