PROTEINS…
 Healthy and complete protein is an important part of
your diet.
 Protein was the first nutrient to be discovered and
named .
 Vital for building, repairing and maintaining tissues.
From the pages of history:
•Francis Moore in her book ‘ Diet for a
small planet stated plant proteins are
incomplete and we need to take animal
proteins for our health.
•20 years later she corrected her theory and
other researches proved her theory wrong
•But still people stick to the concept
“IF I NEED PROTEINS
I NEED TO TAKE MEAT “
In order to sustain growth and profits in the
meat industry, their trade associations promote
meat as the only good source of protein
The concept of chicken and fish protein as
healthy is often promoted through so called
mainstream articles written in health related
magazines and publications.
ANIMAL PROTEINS PLANT PROTEINS
HIGH QUALITY PROTEINS LOW QUALITY PROTEINS
COMPLETE PROTEINS INCOMPLETE PROTEINS
SOURCES: Meat, fish, poultry,
eggs and diary
Sources: Almost all fruits and
vegetables
ADVANTAGES OF PLANT
PROTEINS
1.LOWER FAT : 100 grams of ground beef has 24 grams of protein, 21
grams of fat, and 0 grams of fiber. One hundred grams of kidney beans has
23 grams of protein, 1 gram of fat, and 15 grams of fiber
2. HIGH FIBER : Fiber is found only in plant foods. Fiber can make you
feel full for a long time, prevent cravings and help you control your appetite.
It also contributes to heart health because it has no cholesterol. Fiber
contributes to good digestive health by promoting bowel regularity.
3. LOWER WEIGHT: Plant proteins are usually lower in calories per
serving than animal sources. Replacing animal proteins with low-fat plant
proteins and using low-fat cooking methods just a few times per week may
help you lose weight
4. MICRONUTRIENTS: Eating a variety of plant-based proteins
provides amino acids you need to be healthy, with the added benefits of
varied vitamins and minerals
DISADVANTAGES OF ANIMAL PROTEINS
1. High cholesterol: Contributes to weight gain, high
blood pressure, heart diseases
2. Requires more energy to digest than plant
proteins
3. Becomes toxic: Animal proteins stays in blood
stream to 4 days and have toxic effects.
4. Acidifying: Cause acid levels to rise and leads to
cancers, heart diseases.
HOW ANIMAL PROTEINS AFFECT
OUR HEALTH ?
OSTEOPOROSIS Animal proteins
encourage calcium loss
Kidney problems Kidney stones ,Kidney
function loss
Cancers Fat
Highly heated foods
Carcinogenic content in
cooked foods
Impaired pancreatic
function
Pancreatic overload
HOW DOES THIS MYTH AFFECT OUR
ENVIRONMENT
•World meat consumption doubled between 1950
and 2009
• Uptick in consumption of eggs and milk has been
similarly staggering.
•If we continue at this rate, by 2050 we will be eating
two thirds more animal protein globally than we are
today
1.Acres of land used for cultivating wheat and soybeans to
feed the live stock using fertilizers and pesticides
Pesticides and fertilizers enter water stream
Water Pollution Marine dead zones
2.The feed processing factories again consume a lot of
energy for this process before the feed is transported to
various parts of world.
5OO Million tons of manure is produced by live stock every year
Pollutants enter water sources Waste decomposing
Water pollution Dust, odour, toxic gases
Marine dead zones Health effects
GREEN HOUSE GAS EMISSION
1.Ruminant digestion of cows and sheep - Methane (25
times potent than carbon dioxide)
2.Feed production - Pesticides and fertilizers -
Nitrous oxide (300 times the warming effect of carbon
dioxide)
3.Manure - Methane and nitrous oxide
•Beef has more than twice the emissions of pork, nearly four times
that of chicken and more than thirteen times that of vegetable
proteins such as beans, lentils and tofu.
• Eating 4 ounces of lamb is equal to driving 13 miles in terms of
carbon foot print.
What about climate change ???
Skipping meat once a week can make a meaningful difference if we all do
it
If everyone in the U.S. chose a vegetarian diet – the
equivalent of taking 46 million cars off the road or not
driving 555 billion miles and it would reduce overall
carbon emissions by only 4.5 percent
If you eat one less burger a week for a
year, it’s like taking your car off the
road for 320 miles or line-drying your
clothes half the time.
YES.. WE CAN DO A LOT…..
WHAT I THIMK IS….
 Proteins you consume are composed of amino acids.
But if these proteins lack one of the essential amino
acids, you can't use them for construction purposes.
So we don't need protein, but amino acids.
 Any fruit or vegetable contains amino acid as long as
it is not cooked. Even consuming the right mixed
fruits only, you will absorb almost twice as much of
all the amino acids as you minimally need.
.
SO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IS…
Eat foods that make sense—foods that are easily digestible
and are easy to eliminate; foods that will give you
energy instead of foods that will deprive you of energy
and plant proteins does make sense.

