The Power of 'They'
These statements are common place in executive and
management meetings when referencing global and
domestic teams. But very rarely is it discussed on how
these words, primarily the word 'they' is impacting both
the sender and recipient of the message.
The word they originated between 1150-1200 and was
used to replace the word hī(e)). It can be defined as
'people in general' and is a 'nominative plural of he, she
and it,' research shows. But when used in the context of
referring to a group of people whether your team or not,
it can portray an underlying origin of bias, precedence or
sense of superiority especially when coupled with
negative connotations as listed above.
According to authors Andrew Newberg, M.D. and Mark
Robert Waldman in their book Words Can Change Your
Brain, 'Angry words send alarm messages through the
brain, and they partially shut down the logic-and-
reasoning centers located in the frontal lobes.' In
contrast, 'by holding a positive and optimistic [word] in
your mind, you stimulate frontal lobe activity...the longer
you concentrate on positive words, the more you begin
to affect other areas of the brain. Functions in the parietal
lobe start to change, which changes your perception of
yourself and the people you interact with...Over time the
structure of your thalamus will also change in response
to your conscious words, thoughts, and feelings, and we
believe that the thalamic changes affect the way in which
you perceive reality.' Sadly, many are unaware that
THEIR words may be the CAUSE of the lack of innovation
and creativity among their teams.
So what are you saying to yourself and to others in your
global team? Are you using the word they to indicate
someone not in the same intellectual level you are or
existing in a state of lesser importance? Or are you
realizing the impact of your words understanding that we
are all one people, one race, one team?

They continue to miss the deliverable.
They need to be held accountable.
There is no way they are being productivity all day.
