The Power of Persuasion
The Power of Persuasion
Thesis Statement: To inform my audience about the science and the power of persuasion.
Introduction
I. "If you would persuade, you must appeal to interest rather than intellect." These are wise words spoken by Benjamin Franklin, whom we all know
for his roles in American History as a writer, scientist and politician.
II. In this quote, Benjamin Franklin speaks of how to persuade. But why would it be important to know how to persuade?
III. I always have to ask my child to pick up his toys after he done playing with them and my husband to take out the trash. Of course, they never want
to do it so I must persuade them into doing so. At some point in life, we all have to persuade someone into doing...show more content...
h.Peer pressure can be dangerous when the only goal is to be socially accepted; in this case most individuals would do "whatever it takes" to be
accepted.
Conclusion
I. Persuasion is a powerful tool that can be used to motivate individuals to do good things for society and for themselves, but it can also be used to do
harm.
Based on the tendencies upon which people act and make decisions, it is up to the individual to determine when and how they allow themselves to be
persuaded, because as strong and powerful as persuasion can be, there is also another powerful tool that individuals tend to lean on when they have to
make a decision and that is intuition.
Some quotes on persuasion.
''For your own good'' is a persuasive argument that will eventually make a man agree to his own destruction.
Janet Frame (1924–2004) New Zealand writer.
"Let one who wants to move and convince others, first be convinced and moved themselves. If a person speaks with genuine earnestness the thoughts,
the emotion and the actual condition of their own heart, others will listen because we all are knit together by the tie of sympathy."
Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) British historian and essayist.

Silence and Signals
Direct communication is impossible due to social rules and proprieties. The prose style becomes chaotic and troubled as it is reflects a tormented mind
filled with repetitions ("Eight years, almost eight years had passed"), urgent rhetorical questions ("What might eight years not do?"), exclamations
("how natural, how certain too!"), and interjections ("Alas! With all her reasonings she found that to retentive feelings eight years may be little more
than nothing"). So Anne's consciousness permeates the presentation of their meeting and pinpoints the difficulties of polite society, the veil behind all

Mary tells Anne Captain Wentworth's observance to somebody else that Anne was so altered, that he should not of known her again. This
communication was not supposed to be related to her and erects another obstacle between them and the resolution of their love. Whilst this revelation
shatters her it also erases her hope: a conviction in which she stoically rejoices. Her time then is spent agonizing between the emotional and passionate
self and the composed sober self, hope and circumspection.
The reader is privileged with an insight into his mind and we see that he is still hurt but ultimately still feels the same towards her as he did eight years
ago, and the potential of the renewal of his love:
"He had not forgiven Anne Elliot. She had used him ill, deserted and disappointed him She had given him up to oblige others. It had been the effect of
over–persuasion His bright proud eye spoke the happy conviction that he was nice; and Anne Elliot was not out of his thoughts, when he more than
seriously described the woman he wished to meet with. 'A strong mind, with sweetness of manner', made the first and last of the description".
Whilst we are thus informed by this mixed method of presentation of different types of consciousness, Anne is left floundering, guessing and
interpreting his gestures and glances. He does not speak to her other than to say what civilities

Examples Of Persuasion
Saudeni or as we know it, persuasion, has been used for many millennia, ever since the first breathing, thinking human being spoke its first words.
Although a person can make an argument that they don't use persuasion at all and list examples, they are subconsciously using persuasion. We as
humans do it so often that we don't even know we are doing it... almost like a sixth sense. Persuasion is our way of survival. Just like giraffe's have a
long neck, or a cheetah having the speed of sports car. It is our way of surviving and thriving, and we take advantage of it. Children use persuasion to
get that extra two dollars to buy the toy they have been saving up for the next time they went to the store. Adults use persuasion to nail a business
interview to job they have wanted ever since they were a child. In Julius Caesar, a play...show more content...
By doing so, the speaker has a better chance of persuading the audience. For example, Antony starts of his speech by saying "I come to bury Caesar,
not to praise him." Antony says this as Brutus has just spoken before him about Caesar being ambitious, and Antony does not want to enrage the
Roman people by opposing it outright. Another example of his speech is "He was my friend, faithful and just to me." He is trying to get the Roman
people to listen to him by telling them that him and Caesar were friends and that he is in a way "trustworthy". Finally, Antony states "I come not,
friends, to steal away your hearts." Antony is saying that he does not want to make the Roman people sympathetic or furious as he is a friend of the
Romans. After Antony speaks, the people's hearts are "stolen", as that was what Antony wanted to happen, even though he said the exact opposite.
Antony gains the trust of the Roman people during his speech with the use of

Persuasion: A Necessary Social Skill
Persuasion: A Necessary Social Skill We are taught that listening thoughtfully and speaking helpfully are essential social skills for interacting with our
fellow humans. Indeed, they are important communication tools; yet, they are actually part of the important social skill of persuasion. This is the key
communication skill needed to achieve social goals because with persuasion, empathy occurs, reason reigns, and conflict is avoided. One way to be
persuasive is to appeal to the emotion of the other party. This requires empathy. Putting yourself in the shoes of another person allows you, as the
persuader, to prioritize what might matter the most to the other person. What do they love? What do they need? Using this information to formulate a
win–win situation can be very persuasive. Knowing what someone values allows the persuader to create scarcity of that item and...show more content...
It requires the persuader to identify the decision–maker who is open–minded and inclined to civil discussion. Children will select the open–minded
adult when seeking permission to do something out of the ordinary. Children also know instinctively that it is sometimes necessary to broach the
subject, back off, and then re–open the discussion at another time. Persistence pays off, as does sensitivity to the context and timing of the persuasive
conversation. Some will argue that this is actually manipulation or deception, but it is actually evaluating the reality of the situation and choosing the
most opportune scenario to open the persuasive discussion. Society needs good persuaders. They bring a talented skill–set to the scene and move it
from a stalemate to one of growth. Those who are able to empathize, reason, and peaceably persuade contribute to the well–being of those involved
with problem–solving and solution creating. Consider your own persuasive abilities. You may decide to choose to strengthen them for your welfare and
those you interact

Reflection Of A Persuasive Reflection
Reflection of a Persuasive Essay by Vickie Hale In my revision, I decided to incorporate actionable feedback from the feedback I received. The
feedback I received was that my essay needed more clarification, I choose to use this feedback to help make my argument more developed, I wanted to
create a better thought out essay and I worked on the clarification of my argument as well as renewed my research. With that, I did some critical
thinking to help work through the weak areas of my essay which was the structure and syntax. Therefore, I incorporated these suggestions because
they helped me to improve my essay and help me to create a more persuasive essay. Without these changes alongside the small revisions, I made, I do
not believe my essay would have been as well–written so they were much needed. My biggest challenges came from not being able to pin down my
argument, it took me a while to come find a side to an argument that wasn't vague. Because, I usually write in a creative way, which does not
necessarily have to be persuasive, I usually write fictional stories and people getting the understanding from the experiences of the characters is the
outcome, but with persuasive writing, you are trying to get your readers to not only agree with your side of the argument but to see what and why
you are arguing your side in the first place. This became difficult for me because I kept feeling like my argument was not central and a little vague.
I worked on trying to help my readers understand what and why I was arguing my side of the argument. I had to think about who was reading my
essay and this helped. What I could have done differently is choose a more central argument, I believe it would have reduced my challenges. This
question is hard for me to answer because I did not receive but one peer feedback, the feedback I incorporated concerning my exploration of the
issue was more clarification because that was one of the problems my peer review pointed out. I worked on my clarification because it is one of the
main elements, that is needed when you are writing a persuasive essay or any essay for that matter. Clarification gives the essay structure so your
readers can have a full understanding of your

Reflection On My Persuasive Speech Essay
Reflection on my Persuasive Speech
All communication is an attempt to influence, highlights Back (1951) and, by extension, hinders the audience 's preconceptions on a topic. Thinking
about communication and particular verbal strategies and theory both brought forth excellent criticisms and compliments ofor my persuasive speech. It
's purpose being to persuade the audience in favour of Britian 's exit from the European Union. My persausive speech aimed to educate the audience
further on a topic and opinion, New Zealanders tend to distance themselves from. It also aimed to initiate a shift in attitudes towards my viewpoint.
Attitudes, Values and Beliefs
Prior to my speech, I assessed the probable attitudes, values and beliefs of my audience. O 'Keefe (2001) describes an attitude as a person 's overall
evaluation of something with the notion of an attitude being the evaluative judgment of (reaction to) something. Social judgment theory is a persuasion
theory proposed by Sherif and Hovland (1961), defined by Griffin, (2012) as the prior observation and evaluation of an idea by comparing it with the
audience 's current position. When assessing this position, I assumed the speech was clearly catered to a familiar audience. The audience consisted of
similary aged peers from assumed similar backgrounds, because of this I was relatively easy to relate too– creating idealisatic Identification, a
persuasive communication technique outlined by Burke (1950). It was important to take

Persuasive Essay About Science
Every kid wants to go to the moon one day, or save children and families from blazing fires They all have a dream. We were always asked the
question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The stereotypical jobs always came to mind. The thought of being an astronaut, floating
through space and discovering the planets. The thought of being a firefighter and saving the town from disastrous flames. These were normally
the first ones. Kids would always argue over who would be the best police officer. They would run around the playground playing "Cops and
Robbers", testing each other's heroic abilities. Then, there was me. Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to study some sort of science. My
mom has always worked in the medical field, so as soon as she got home I would ask what she did that day. It was always different. Some days she
would be working with a patient with cancer and others she would be removing an arm or leg due to a horrific car accident. It all kept me
entertained as a child and has since. Although I knew what subject of study I wanted to go into, I never knew the specific field. There were so
many options. You could be a physician, surgeon, or a research scientist. The list goes on and will continue to grow as new fields are developed.
There is one deciding factor for everyone, though. There is always that one moment or event that caused a feeling of awe. A desire to learn more. This
feeling came to me in my sophomore year of high school. Walking

Essay about Persuasion in "12 Angry Men"
In his article, "The Necessary Art of Persuasion", Jay Conger stated that persuasion is NOT about selling or convincing; rather, it is a learning and
negotiating process. Good persuaders use and listen to ongoing and active discussions (or debates) to learn about their audience and include different
opinions into a shared conclusion. In the movie "12 Angry Men", juror number 8 (Henry Fonda) was not sure if evidence presented against a young
defendant in court left reasonable doubt for a guilty conviction. The other jurors believed the presented facts and the defendant's background warrants a
guilty conviction. The movie showed how juror number 8 persuasively got the other jurors to review each fact logically, which led to an unanimous

It is critical to identify the tangible benefits and values that really matters to people being persuade. Effective persuaders consider what is important to
an audience and lays his or her position to match common ground with the audience. This is a give–and–take process. Effective persuaders also use
testimonies, past and current research, etc and readjust their argument to make them appealing to their audience. Persuaders must know an audience
well enough to know what will capture their immediate and continued attention.
Juror number 8 was in a situation where there is no common ground between him and the other jurors. All are from diverse backgrounds and
uncomfortably brought together to deliberate the facts in an open–and–shut murder trial. Juror number 8, wanting to "just talk", kept reconsidering and
adjusting his position with the other juror's positions about the defendant until a common was reach in the deliberation. Again, this is a give–and–take
process and is effective if properly done right.
The third essential step is presenting evidence to an audience. Conger stated that evidence alone will not convince an audience to support a position or
an idea. Evidence can appear too abstract and not entirely informative. Persuaders, Conger noted, use stories, metaphors, analogies, examples, etc and
use vivid language skillfully to paint a compelling big picture of their point of view. This approach is far more effective than stating facts in

Jane Austen's Persuasion Essay
In the early 1800s Jane Austen wrote what would be her last novel, Persuasion. Persuasion is set during the "Georgian Society" which greatly affects the
character's views and actions throughout the novel. Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth quickly fell in love when Anne was just nineteen years old,
but because he wasn't wealthy enough, Anne was not given the permission by her father, Sir Walter, to marry him. Eight years after this incident, the
roles have reversed; Sir Walter has lost all of his money and Frederick Wentworth is now known as Captain Wentworth. Throughout the novel, Anne
tries to overcome struggles with social class in order to fulfill her longing of being with Captain Wentworth. Therese Anderson's statement about the

The assumption of money implying the quality of one's past and future is concretely established in this scene. For this very reason, Sir Walter did not
want his daughter to marry a working man. He was afraid that if she would settle with someone who was not economically fit, she would be at a
disadvantage, which was a common misconception during this time period. "Though every profession is necessary and honorable in any, who can live
in a regular way, choosing their own hours... I say, to hold the blessings of health and a good appearance to the utmost" (Austen 20). Austen utilizes this
passage to explain the character of Sir Walter and also show how much of an impact his views have on Anne. Although she loves Wentworth, she values
her father's opinion much more. Austen goes on to illustrate another important characteristic of a man by creating dialogue between Mr. Shepherd, a
family friend who only speaks of non–controversial topics, and Anne. Mr. Shepherd goes on to say, "Wentworth
– Oh! Mr. Wentworth, the curate of a
Monk–ford. I thought you were speaking of some man of property; Mr Wentworth was a nobody, quite unconnected" (Austen 23). Property was also
used as a measurement of one's social class, which made Wentworth "unworthy" of Anne. Wentworth's lower social standing caused anxiety to her
family as they were afraid it would hurt Anne if they were to get married. The

Persuasive Essay On The Art Of Art
Art declares many things. It's a way for people to articulate their views, express their emotions, and communicate to the world in a way that gives
them creative release. This ability to exhibit one's views in a imaginative and safe manner is exceptionally important to society's growth, and to border
this freedom to articulate is detrimental. Art should not be hidden and concealed permanently from the public eye because some see it as vulgar due to
the fact that many people have varying definitions as to what is crossing the line. Only certain, obvious things can be noted as truly indecent.
Censorship is not an easy subject. As an artist, there is often a lot of tolerance for the obscene, from appreciation to detail on the human figure or
the unique renditions of animalistic interaction. However, the majority of the public might find the same things that the artists see as a unique
interpretation as vulgar. It is easy to see that such a standpoint must be taken into more consideration, as the point of indecency can differ greatly
for a conservative Christian compared to a liberal atheist. The two images of what each group considers unseemly would most likely range in their
obscenity, and so it would be difficult to put a line where one should be crossed. "If an image offends very many people, sooner or later someone
will invoke the law, and along with it judges, legislators, policymakers, and the police," quotes Melinda Hinkson in Australia's Bill Henson scandal:
notes on the new cultural attitude to images. Here we have a majority rule, where an image should only have action dealt upon it if enough people
want change. Such censorship is easy to determine when there are pieces depicting derogatory themes, such as child pornography or racial notions.
But there are multiple cases where there are two sides of the story, and it is not as simple.
A statue named Truth is Beauty by Marco Cochrane has recently been constructed in the city of San Leandro, here in the bay area. This statue depicts a

Persuasive Essay About Friendship
When I was in pre–school, I formed a conspiracy in order to become the friend of this one girl in my class. From that point on, friendship had always
been this equation–esque problem to solve. It always was highly difficult to find someone to connect with on a platonic level. I was extremely
socially anxious and had no idea of how to actually make friends. All of my healthiest and most successful friendships were not made through my
previous methods, but were all rather happy accidents. However, luck combined with mutual characteristics are not the only aspects of friendships
with which one concerns his or herself. When making a friend, one is bound to lose a part of themselves in that other person. This happens when a
person makes any sort of devotion to the other, whether miniscule of utmost importance. Whether or not this predicament is negative or positive
depends on the part they lose. A negative predicament may include the loss of good habits and demeanors replaced by destructive or unhealthy
behavior. A positive situation may include one person being a sort of foil to the other's personality. For example, one friend may lack social skills, but
has confidence in his or herself while the other friend might be highly gregarious but has deep sated insecurities. While in a good, healthy friendship,
they start to lose the parts that may be lacking and pick up those that better show the other facets of their personality. The friendship is not based on
mutual benefits, but

Introduction
In business the most vital skill is communication. In a setting where ideas are the business, it is imperative to be able to communicate those ideas
effectively. The most important part of communication is the persuasive message. Communication is defined as a process by which we give and
express meaning in an effort to create shared understanding. This process requires a huge range of skills in intrapersonal and interpersonal processing,
speaking, listening, questioning, analyzing, observing, and evaluating[1]. Use of these processes is developmental and transfers to all areas of life:
home, school, community, work, and beyond. It is through communication that...show more content...
Before people buy into a suggestion they want to see that the persuader is flexible enough to respond to their concerns. Compromises can often become
better, more sustainable, shared solutions.
3. Thinking the secret of persuasion lies in presenting great arguments. Great arguments matter, but they are only one part. Other factors matter just as
much, such as credibility and their ability to create an equally beneficial position for themselves and their audience, (a win win situation), to connect on
the correct emotional level and to communicate through words that makes arguments come alive.
4. Assuming persuasion is a one–time effort. Persuasion is a process. Common solutions are rarely reached on the first try.
Effective Negotiations
Effective negotiations are a method of working a compromise or agreement in which the parties to the negotiations try to achieve their goals in
reasonable and practical manner through the process of give and take using effective communication.
Negotiation is a central activity of our lives. Knowingly or unknowingly we negotiate every day, with our colleagues, and bosses, family members,
friends, strangers, and some times even with our–selves. We use negotiation to realize our expectations, to achieve goals, work out a problem or
simply to avoid trouble. Sometimes we negotiate to assist others in resolving their problems. Negotiation is a problem solving

The genesis of persuasion is about getting into the minds in a way that can persuade an influence their change of thoughts, actions or behavior. In fact,
the human mind are not all alike, nor does everyone's mind think the same. In addition, going back to the relevance of human nature and the theories
that originate from it. Persuasion theory is defined as a way to change someone's attitude, thought process, and/or influence their way of thinking (Bizer,

involves rhetoric from Aristotle. Where the both theories connect and have the same understanding is when the common factor is persuasion. These

However, using too much of logos can be a drag as too much facts and statistics makes a speech mundane. This is why ethos is equally used in a
persuasive speech. Ethos uses credibility to persuade the audience. The speaker credits the audience by complimenting them in various ways. In J.F.K's
Berlin speech, his starting sentence clearly shows Ethos, "I am proud to come to this city as the guest of your distinguished Mayor, who has
symbolized thoroughout the world the fighting spirit of West Berlin. And I am proud to visit the Federal Republic with your distinguished
Chancellor…" In the starting speech, J.F.K uses personal pronouns to include the audiences in his speech. Kennedy also repeats the word
"distinguished", which is an evident compliment to the country. J.F.K also addresses positions of authority like Berlin's Mayor and Chancellor to make
it seem respectable. Ethos is very useful when it comes to persuasion, as one tends to take pride in praises which others say to them. Likewise, pathos is
another technique used to persuade the audience emotionally. Although emotional appeals are not popular in some formal arguments, it still remains
the most powerful persuasive factor, as ethos and logos sometimes do

Advantages Of Persuasion
Introduction to Persuasion
Persuasion is the art of influencing or convincing someone – be it a business or a person, to change their opinion or decision on a certain topic, through

The Power Of Persuasion

  • 1. The Power of Persuasion The Power of Persuasion Thesis Statement: To inform my audience about the science and the power of persuasion. Introduction I. "If you would persuade, you must appeal to interest rather than intellect." These are wise words spoken by Benjamin Franklin, whom we all know for his roles in American History as a writer, scientist and politician. II. In this quote, Benjamin Franklin speaks of how to persuade. But why would it be important to know how to persuade? III. I always have to ask my child to pick up his toys after he done playing with them and my husband to take out the trash. Of course, they never want to do it so I must persuade them into doing so. At some point in life, we all have to persuade someone into doing...show more content... h.Peer pressure can be dangerous when the only goal is to be socially accepted; in this case most individuals would do "whatever it takes" to be accepted. Conclusion I. Persuasion is a powerful tool that can be used to motivate individuals to do good things for society and for themselves, but it can also be used to do harm. Based on the tendencies upon which people act and make decisions, it is up to the individual to determine when and how they allow themselves to be persuaded, because as strong and powerful as persuasion can be, there is also another powerful tool that individuals tend to lean on when they have to make a decision and that is intuition. Some quotes on persuasion. ''For your own good'' is a persuasive argument that will eventually make a man agree to his own destruction. Janet Frame (1924–2004) New Zealand writer.
  • 2. "Let one who wants to move and convince others, first be convinced and moved themselves. If a person speaks with genuine earnestness the thoughts, the emotion and the actual condition of their own heart, others will listen because we all are knit together by the tie of sympathy." • 3. Essay on Persuasion by Jane Austen Persuasion by Jane Austen Silence and Signals Direct communication is impossible due to social rules and proprieties. The prose style becomes chaotic and troubled as it is reflects a tormented mind filled with repetitions ("Eight years, almost eight years had passed"), urgent rhetorical questions ("What might eight years not do?"), exclamations ("how natural, how certain too!"), and interjections ("Alas! With all her reasonings she found that to retentive feelings eight years may be little more than nothing"). So Anne's consciousness permeates the presentation of their meeting and pinpoints the difficulties of polite society, the veil behind all must act, he signals and performs enough to mark an "easy footing". We see then the...show more content... Mary tells Anne Captain Wentworth's observance to somebody else that Anne was so altered, that he should not of known her again. This communication was not supposed to be related to her and erects another obstacle between them and the resolution of their love. Whilst this revelation shatters her it also erases her hope: a conviction in which she stoically rejoices. Her time then is spent agonizing between the emotional and passionate self and the composed sober self, hope and circumspection. The reader is privileged with an insight into his mind and we see that he is still hurt but ultimately still feels the same towards her as he did eight years ago, and the potential of the renewal of his love: "He had not forgiven Anne Elliot. She had used him ill, deserted and disappointed him She had given him up to oblige others. It had been the effect of over–persuasion His bright proud eye spoke the happy conviction that he was nice; and Anne Elliot was not out of his thoughts, when he more than seriously described the woman he wished to meet with. 'A strong mind, with sweetness of manner', made the first and last of the description". Whilst we are thus informed by this mixed method of presentation of different types of consciousness, Anne is left floundering, guessing and interpreting his gestures and glances. He does not speak to her other than to say what civilities Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Examples Of Persuasion Saudeni or as we know it, persuasion, has been used for many millennia, ever since the first breathing, thinking human being spoke its first words. Although a person can make an argument that they don't use persuasion at all and list examples, they are subconsciously using persuasion. We as humans do it so often that we don't even know we are doing it... almost like a sixth sense. Persuasion is our way of survival. Just like giraffe's have a long neck, or a cheetah having the speed of sports car. It is our way of surviving and thriving, and we take advantage of it. Children use persuasion to get that extra two dollars to buy the toy they have been saving up for the next time they went to the store. Adults use persuasion to nail a business interview to job they have wanted ever since they were a child. In Julius Caesar, a play...show more content... By doing so, the speaker has a better chance of persuading the audience. For example, Antony starts of his speech by saying "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him." Antony says this as Brutus has just spoken before him about Caesar being ambitious, and Antony does not want to enrage the Roman people by opposing it outright. Another example of his speech is "He was my friend, faithful and just to me." He is trying to get the Roman people to listen to him by telling them that him and Caesar were friends and that he is in a way "trustworthy". Finally, Antony states "I come not, friends, to steal away your hearts." Antony is saying that he does not want to make the Roman people sympathetic or furious as he is a friend of the Romans. After Antony speaks, the people's hearts are "stolen", as that was what Antony wanted to happen, even though he said the exact opposite. Antony gains the trust of the Roman people during his speech with the use of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Persuasion: A Necessary Social Skill Persuasion: A Necessary Social Skill We are taught that listening thoughtfully and speaking helpfully are essential social skills for interacting with our fellow humans. Indeed, they are important communication tools; yet, they are actually part of the important social skill of persuasion. This is the key communication skill needed to achieve social goals because with persuasion, empathy occurs, reason reigns, and conflict is avoided. One way to be persuasive is to appeal to the emotion of the other party. This requires empathy. Putting yourself in the shoes of another person allows you, as the persuader, to prioritize what might matter the most to the other person. What do they love? What do they need? Using this information to formulate a win–win situation can be very persuasive. Knowing what someone values allows the persuader to create scarcity of that item and...show more content... It requires the persuader to identify the decision–maker who is open–minded and inclined to civil discussion. Children will select the open–minded adult when seeking permission to do something out of the ordinary. Children also know instinctively that it is sometimes necessary to broach the subject, back off, and then re–open the discussion at another time. Persistence pays off, as does sensitivity to the context and timing of the persuasive conversation. Some will argue that this is actually manipulation or deception, but it is actually evaluating the reality of the situation and choosing the most opportune scenario to open the persuasive discussion. Society needs good persuaders. They bring a talented skill–set to the scene and move it from a stalemate to one of growth. Those who are able to empathize, reason, and peaceably persuade contribute to the well–being of those involved with problem–solving and solution creating. Consider your own persuasive abilities. You may decide to choose to strengthen them for your welfare and those you interact Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 8. Reflection Of A Persuasive Reflection Reflection of a Persuasive Essay by Vickie Hale In my revision, I decided to incorporate actionable feedback from the feedback I received. The feedback I received was that my essay needed more clarification, I choose to use this feedback to help make my argument more developed, I wanted to create a better thought out essay and I worked on the clarification of my argument as well as renewed my research. With that, I did some critical thinking to help work through the weak areas of my essay which was the structure and syntax. Therefore, I incorporated these suggestions because they helped me to improve my essay and help me to create a more persuasive essay. Without these changes alongside the small revisions, I made, I do not believe my essay would have been as well–written so they were much needed. My biggest challenges came from not being able to pin down my argument, it took me a while to come find a side to an argument that wasn't vague. Because, I usually write in a creative way, which does not necessarily have to be persuasive, I usually write fictional stories and people getting the understanding from the experiences of the characters is the outcome, but with persuasive writing, you are trying to get your readers to not only agree with your side of the argument but to see what and why you are arguing your side in the first place. This became difficult for me because I kept feeling like my argument was not central and a little vague. I worked on trying to help my readers understand what and why I was arguing my side of the argument. I had to think about who was reading my essay and this helped. What I could have done differently is choose a more central argument, I believe it would have reduced my challenges. This question is hard for me to answer because I did not receive but one peer feedback, the feedback I incorporated concerning my exploration of the issue was more clarification because that was one of the problems my peer review pointed out. I worked on my clarification because it is one of the main elements, that is needed when you are writing a persuasive essay or any essay for that matter. Clarification gives the essay structure so your readers can have a full understanding of your Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Reflection On My Persuasive Speech Essay Reflection on my Persuasive Speech All communication is an attempt to influence, highlights Back (1951) and, by extension, hinders the audience 's preconceptions on a topic. Thinking about communication and particular verbal strategies and theory both brought forth excellent criticisms and compliments ofor my persuasive speech. It 's purpose being to persuade the audience in favour of Britian 's exit from the European Union. My persausive speech aimed to educate the audience further on a topic and opinion, New Zealanders tend to distance themselves from. It also aimed to initiate a shift in attitudes towards my viewpoint. Attitudes, Values and Beliefs Prior to my speech, I assessed the probable attitudes, values and beliefs of my audience. O 'Keefe (2001) describes an attitude as a person 's overall evaluation of something with the notion of an attitude being the evaluative judgment of (reaction to) something. Social judgment theory is a persuasion theory proposed by Sherif and Hovland (1961), defined by Griffin, (2012) as the prior observation and evaluation of an idea by comparing it with the audience 's current position. When assessing this position, I assumed the speech was clearly catered to a familiar audience. The audience consisted of similary aged peers from assumed similar backgrounds, because of this I was relatively easy to relate too– creating idealisatic Identification, a persuasive communication technique outlined by Burke (1950). • 10. Persuasive Essay About Science Every kid wants to go to the moon one day, or save children and families from blazing fires They all have a dream. We were always asked the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The stereotypical jobs always came to mind. The thought of being an astronaut, floating through space and discovering the planets. The thought of being a firefighter and saving the town from disastrous flames. These were normally the first ones. Kids would always argue over who would be the best police officer. They would run around the playground playing "Cops and Robbers", testing each other's heroic abilities. Then, there was me. Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to study some sort of science. My mom has always worked in the medical field, so as soon as she got home I would ask what she did that day. It was always different. Some days she would be working with a patient with cancer and others she would be removing an arm or leg due to a horrific car accident. It all kept me entertained as a child and has since. Although I knew what subject of study I wanted to go into, I never knew the specific field. There were so many options. You could be a physician, surgeon, or a research scientist. The list goes on and will continue to grow as new fields are developed. There is one deciding factor for everyone, though. There is always that one moment or event that caused a feeling of awe. A desire to learn more. This feeling came to me in my sophomore year of high school. Walking Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay about Persuasion in "12 Angry Men" In his article, "The Necessary Art of Persuasion", Jay Conger stated that persuasion is NOT about selling or convincing; rather, it is a learning and negotiating process. Good persuaders use and listen to ongoing and active discussions (or debates) to learn about their audience and include different opinions into a shared conclusion. In the movie "12 Angry Men", juror number 8 (Henry Fonda) was not sure if evidence presented against a young defendant in court left reasonable doubt for a guilty conviction. The other jurors believed the presented facts and the defendant's background warrants a guilty conviction. The movie showed how juror number 8 persuasively got the other jurors to review each fact logically, which led to an unanimous ...show more content... It is critical to identify the tangible benefits and values that really matters to people being persuade. Effective persuaders consider what is important to an audience and lays his or her position to match common ground with the audience. This is a give–and–take process. Effective persuaders also use testimonies, past and current research, etc and readjust their argument to make them appealing to their audience. Persuaders must know an audience well enough to know what will capture their immediate and continued attention. Juror number 8 was in a situation where there is no common ground between him and the other jurors. All are from diverse backgrounds and uncomfortably brought together to deliberate the facts in an open–and–shut murder trial. Juror number 8, wanting to "just talk", kept reconsidering and adjusting his position with the other juror's positions about the defendant until a common was reach in the deliberation. Again, this is a give–and–take process and is effective if properly done right. The third essential step is presenting evidence to an audience. Conger stated that evidence alone will not convince an audience to support a position or an idea. Evidence can appear too abstract and not entirely informative. Persuaders, Conger noted, use stories, metaphors, analogies, examples, etc and use vivid language skillfully to paint a compelling big picture of their point of view. • 12. Jane Austen's Persuasion Essay In the early 1800s Jane Austen wrote what would be her last novel, Persuasion. Persuasion is set during the "Georgian Society" which greatly affects the character's views and actions throughout the novel. Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth quickly fell in love when Anne was just nineteen years old, but because he wasn't wealthy enough, Anne was not given the permission by her father, Sir Walter, to marry him. Eight years after this incident, the roles have reversed; Sir Walter has lost all of his money and Frederick Wentworth is now known as Captain Wentworth. Throughout the novel, Anne tries to overcome struggles with social class in order to fulfill her longing of being with Captain Wentworth. Therese Anderson's statement about the ...show more content... The assumption of money implying the quality of one's past and future is concretely established in this scene. For this very reason, Sir Walter did not want his daughter to marry a working man. He was afraid that if she would settle with someone who was not economically fit, she would be at a disadvantage, which was a common misconception during this time period. "Though every profession is necessary and honorable in any, who can live in a regular way, choosing their own hours... I say, to hold the blessings of health and a good appearance to the utmost" (Austen 20). Austen utilizes this passage to explain the character of Sir Walter and also show how much of an impact his views have on Anne. Although she loves Wentworth, she values her father's opinion much more. Austen goes on to illustrate another important characteristic of a man by creating dialogue between Mr. Shepherd, a family friend who only speaks of non–controversial topics, and Anne. Mr. Shepherd goes on to say, "Wentworth – Oh! Mr. Wentworth, the curate of a Monk–ford. I thought you were speaking of some man of property; Mr Wentworth was a nobody, quite unconnected" (Austen 23). Property was also used as a measurement of one's social class, which made Wentworth "unworthy" of Anne. Wentworth's lower social standing caused anxiety to her family as they were afraid it would hurt Anne if they were to get married. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Persuasive Essay On The Art Of Art Art declares many things. It's a way for people to articulate their views, express their emotions, and communicate to the world in a way that gives them creative release. This ability to exhibit one's views in a imaginative and safe manner is exceptionally important to society's growth, and to border this freedom to articulate is detrimental. Art should not be hidden and concealed permanently from the public eye because some see it as vulgar due to the fact that many people have varying definitions as to what is crossing the line. Only certain, obvious things can be noted as truly indecent. Censorship is not an easy subject. As an artist, there is often a lot of tolerance for the obscene, from appreciation to detail on the human figure or the unique renditions of animalistic interaction. However, the majority of the public might find the same things that the artists see as a unique interpretation as vulgar. It is easy to see that such a standpoint must be taken into more consideration, as the point of indecency can differ greatly for a conservative Christian compared to a liberal atheist. The two images of what each group considers unseemly would most likely range in their obscenity, and so it would be difficult to put a line where one should be crossed. "If an image offends very many people, sooner or later someone will invoke the law, and along with it judges, legislators, policymakers, and the police," quotes Melinda Hinkson in Australia's Bill Henson scandal: notes on the new cultural attitude to images. Here we have a majority rule, where an image should only have action dealt upon it if enough people want change. This statue depicts a nude woman dancing, her body semi–geometric, and although you can not vividly see the all of the womans body parts, it is not difficult to know that she is supposed to be depicted as naked. • 16. Persuasive Essay About Friendship When I was in pre–school, I formed a conspiracy in order to become the friend of this one girl in my class. From that point on, friendship had always been this equation–esque problem to solve. It always was highly difficult to find someone to connect with on a platonic level. I was extremely socially anxious and had no idea of how to actually make friends. All of my healthiest and most successful friendships were not made through my previous methods, but were all rather happy accidents. However, luck combined with mutual characteristics are not the only aspects of friendships with which one concerns his or herself. When making a friend, one is bound to lose a part of themselves in that other person. This happens when a person makes any sort of devotion to the other, whether miniscule of utmost importance. Whether or not this predicament is negative or positive depends on the part they lose. A negative predicament may include the loss of good habits and demeanors replaced by destructive or unhealthy behavior. A positive situation may include one person being a sort of foil to the other's personality. For example, one friend may lack social skills, but has confidence in his or herself while the other friend might be highly gregarious but has deep sated insecurities. While in a good, healthy friendship, they start to lose the parts that may be lacking and pick up those that better show the other facets of their personality. The friendship is not based on mutual benefits, but Get more content on HelpWriting.net

However, using too much of logos can be a drag as too much facts and statistics makes a speech mundane. This is why ethos is equally used in a persuasive speech. Ethos uses credibility to persuade the audience. The speaker credits the audience by complimenting them in various ways. In J.F.K's Berlin speech, his starting sentence clearly shows Ethos, "I am proud to come to this city as the guest of your distinguished Mayor, who has symbolized thoroughout the world the fighting spirit of West Berlin. And I am proud to visit the Federal Republic with your distinguished Chancellor…" In the starting speech, J.F.K uses personal pronouns to include the audiences in his speech. Kennedy also repeats the word "distinguished", which is an evident compliment to the country. J.F.K also addresses positions of authority like Berlin's Mayor and Chancellor to make it seem respectable. Ethos is very useful when it comes to persuasion, as one tends to take pride in praises which others say to them. Likewise, pathos is another technique used to persuade the audience emotionally.
