THE VALUE OF PHILOSOPHY
HAVING now come to the end of our brief and very incomplete review of the problems
of philosophy, it will be well to consider, in conclusion, what is the value of philosophy
and why it ought to be studied. It is the more necessary to consider this question, in view
of the fact that many men, under the influence of science or of practical affairs, are
inclined to doubt whether philosophy is anything better than innocent but useless trifling,
hair-splitting distinctions, and controversies on matters concerning which knowledge is
impossible.
This view of philosophy appears to result, partly from a wrong conception of the ends of
life, partly from a wrong conception of the kind of goods which philosophy strives to
achieve. Physical science, through the medium of inventions, is useful to innumerable
people who are wholly ignorant of it; thus the study of physical science is to be
recommended, not only, or primarily, because of the effect on the student, but rather
because of the effect on mankind in general. Thus utility does not belong to philosophy.
If the study of philosophy has any value at all for others than students of philosophy, it
must be only indirectly, through its effects upon the lives of those who study it. It is in
these effects, therefore, if anywhere, that the value of philosophy must be primarily
sought.
But further, if we are not to fail in our endeavour to determine the value of philosophy,
we must first free our minds from the prejudices of what are wrongly called 'practical'
men. The 'practical' man, as this word is often used, is one who recognizes only material
needs, who realizes that men must have food for the body, but is oblivious of the
necessity of providing food for the mind. If all men were well off, if poverty and disease
had been reduced to their lowest possible point, there would still remain much to be done
to produce a valuable society; and even in the existing world the goods of the mind are at
least as important as the goods of the body. It is exclusively among the goods of the mind
that the value of philosophy is to be found; and only those who are not indifferent to
these goods can be persuaded that the study of philosophy is not a waste of time.
Philosophy, like all other studies, aims primarily at knowledge. The knowledge it aims at
is the kind of knowledge which gives unity and system to the body of the sciences, and
the kind which results from a critical examination of the grounds of our convictions,
prejudices, and beliefs. But it cannot be maintained that philosophy has had any very
great measure of success in its attempts to provide definite answers to its questions. If
you ask a mathematician, a mineralogist, a historian, or any other man of learning, what
definite body of truths has been ascertained by his science, his answer will last as long as
you are willing to listen. B.
To What Use is Philosophy in an Age of Science and Technology?
Philosophy as a discipline of studies and as a form of knowledge is facing a lot of challenges today, even in the university
systems and institutions where some have marginalized it or consigned it to the realm of general studies. The erstwhile
mother of the sciences does not seem to have the dignity among the sciences. Since respectability has today been reserved
to the sciences that appear to have more practical impart specifically the empirical sciences and technology. Thus, in this age
of manufacturing and industry, men are either cynical about any form of knowledge that is merely speculative and does not
talk of bread and butter issues or appear not to have any economic potency. No wonder, a book in French was titled “A Quoi
Bon La Philosophy” (To What Good Is Philosophy). The goal of this article is to respond to this modern cynicism and
interrogation on the utility of philosophy. It will be our contention that any knowledge and learning without the philosophical

This course is an introduction to ethics and ethical reasoning. We will spend most of the
course getting acquainted with the definition and meaning of ethics, and seek in many
ways to transcend conventional views to produce a broader and deeper definition and
understanding of ethics that places it at the center of a meaningful, responsible, and
compassionate life. We will examine key ethical issues, explore major philosophers’
ideas, and examine a number of core ethical traditions. The course aims not only to
explain what ethics is, as a historical and philosophical matter, but also how to do it, as a
reasoned practice relevant to contemporary society and to the quality of one’s own
existence.
After the main focus on ethical theory, we devote the last part of the course to applied
ethics, specifically to the topics of animal rights, ethical veganism, and environmental
ethics. These profound issues surfaced in the last four decades to become major new
fields of inquiry and to pose powerful challenges to Western dogmas and humanist
traditions with their violent and destructive power pathologies. I chose these issues

Philosophy as a discipline of studies and as a form of knowledge is facing a lot of challenges today, even in the university
systems and institutions where some have marginalized it or consigned it to the realm of general studies. The erstwhile
mother of the sciences does not seem to have the dignity among the sciences. Since respectability has today been reserved
to the sciences that appear to have more practical impart specifically the empirical sciences and technology. Thus, in this age
of manufacturing and industry, men are either cynical about any form of knowledge that is merely speculative and does not
talk of bread and butter issues or appear not to have any economic potency. No wonder, a book in French was titled “A Quoi
Bon La Philosophy” (To What Good Is Philosophy). The goal of this article is to respond to this modern cynicism and
interrogation on the utility of philosophy. It will be our contention that any knowledge and learning without the philosophical

Course Description
This course is an introduction to ethics and ethical reasoning. We will spend most of the
course getting acquainted with the definition and meaning of ethics, and seek in many
ways to transcend conventional views to produce a broader and deeper definition and
understanding of ethics that places it at the center of a meaningful, responsible, and
compassionate life. We will examine key ethical issues, explore major philosophers’
ideas, and examine a number of core ethical traditions. The course aims not only to
explain what ethics is, as a historical and philosophical matter, but also how to do it, as a
reasoned practice relevant to contemporary society and to the quality of one’s own
existence.
After the main focus on ethical theory, we devote the last part of the course to applied
ethics, specifically to the topics of animal rights, ethical veganism, and environmental
ethics. These profound issues surfaced in the last four decades to become major new
fields of inquiry and to pose powerful challenges to Western dogmas and humanist
traditions with their violent and destructive power pathologies. I chose these issues
because: (1) they strongly relate to a key course goal to produce a more comprehensive
and expansive concept of ethics than given by the Western tradition; (2) they are

Also, what are the procedures by which we can recognize right or \"substantial\"
thinking from erroneous or \"invalid\" thinking? All the more fundamentally, what is it
that makes one case \"take after intelligently\" from some given data, while
some other case does not?
Numerous responses to these inquiries have been investigated. A few people have
asserted that the laws of rationale are only a question of tradition. In the event that this is in this
way, rationale and tradition
we could probably choose to change the traditions, thus embrace diverse
standards of rationale, the way we can choose which side of the street we drive

already begun long before any of them got there, so no one present is qualified to retrace all the steps that had gone before. You
listen for a while, until you decide that you have caught the tenor of the argument; then you put in your oar. Someone answers;
you answer him; another comes to your defense;; another aligns himself against you.…However, the discussion is interminable.

Entering the Conversation
When you enter the university, or enter advanced course work in your major, you are entering the sort of parlor that Kenneth
Burke describes. While the conversation can certainly be engaging, and the ideas stimulating, the experience of entering a new
setting can be quite unsettling. Who are these folks who are deep in conversation, and what are they getting so worked up
about? On what basis are they taking sides? What does it take to join the conversation and become one of “them”? And what are
the “moves” involved in having a voice in the conversation and in having that voice heard? We would do well to think of the
university as a kind of Burkean parlor or rather a set of overlapping parlors, for no one parlor could ever be sufficient to capture
all of the conversations that go on in various disciplines or on campus.
Although we may think of a college or university as a collection of buildings, or our own education as a list of courses
completed or of expertise gained, the conversational metaphor is actually quite apt. The university is a house of argument. The
university represents an ongoing conversation about questions that are genuinely at issue. An essential part of your college
education is not just learning facts but also learning how to make sense of and join that conversation—a conversation that is not
limited to classrooms but also extends to larger civic spaces.
To enter and take an active role in Burke’s parlor, or in the conversations on your campus and in your disciplines, you’ll need to
figure out the implicit, unstated rules for how people go about talking and arguing. In college, as in the professional world,
much of this conversation occurs in and through written texts. Although there are surely general patterns or guidelines to
academic conversations, you’ll need to alert yourself to the subtle but telling differences between how conversation partners
handle themselves in different conte.

Linear Measurements: Instruments used. Linear Measurement by Tape, Ranging out Survey Lines and overcoming Obstructions; Measurements on sloping ground; Tape corrections, conventional symbols. Angular Measurements: Instruments used; Introduction to Compass Surveying, Bearings and Longitude & Latitude of a Line, Introduction to total station.
Levelling: Instrument used Object of levelling, Methods of levelling in brief, and Contour maps.

The power of art
- 3. This Art is useful in the highest degree and has many valuable features. First, it is useful on account of its general and transcendental character because its principles belong to the highest order of generality and are true, necessary and primordial (as has been shown) and the principles of other sciences can be tested with them. Thus, the Art is a way to gain access to any faculty of study, and not only in speculative areas such as theoretical physics, mathematics, metaphysics and theology, but also in the fields of psychology, the moral sciences, linguistics, mechanics as well as medicine, canon law and civil law.
- 4. And there is nothing out of bounds for this Art in which all things are seen to emanate from one source; it is most useful as a very bright light that the intellect can use to destroy its enemy, namely ignorance. It is most useful to you as a learning tool because it comprehends many things in a small number of loci without any instability and while you discourse with it, all things fall into place in its loci where they can be readily retrieved by your memory. And it is extremely useful because it is lofty and profound when it discourses in the most lofty and profound way about God and all the articles of faith while proving them to be true.
- 6. And finally, it is most useful because by applying it you can learn more in one year than anyone could ordinarily expect to learn in twelve years, as many have experienced, and it is worth infinitely more than gold as it provides broad and ample access to acquiring perfect science in a short time to those who put it to use, as you can see when you consider its layout and discourse.
