The Pitch
- 1. THE PITCH By Emma Duffield
- 2. SETTING • For my short horror film, I have chosen to film in the woods as it is conventional, and is often a setting for many famous horror films such as cabin in the woods and hush. • The location is quite deserted, and most of my shots wont feature the path, as I intend to film ‘off the beaten track.’ This will gain me more of an isolated location as well as create suspense for my audience as the couple wander into the woods with no idea where they are going. • I am also hoping to film on a cloudy day to give that isolated feeling, to create the effect on my audience of mystery.
- 3. CHARACTERS • I have chosen to have 3 characters within my short film as this is conventional because it allows an audience rapport to develop between the audience and each character. • I have chosen to include the theorist Carol J Clover as I am including a ‘first girl’ whom is blonde and not very intelligent. However, there is a narrative twist when the ‘first girl’ doesn’t get killed, and instead it is the unexpectant male character. • I have also decided that my killer wont have an identity, therefore leaving the mystery about its gender. My killer will be wearing a balaclava to cover their face, as well as being dressed all in black.
- 4. CHARACTER COSTUMES My female character will be wearing a white top to represent innocence, whereas my male character will be wearing black to represent death. The female will be wearing minimal make up, to portray a natural, relatable character for my audience
- 5. PROPS • I will be including the following props: • Gun- I will include the prop of a gun as this is a conventional murder weapon for the horror genre. This also follows the theory of Rick Altman that states ‘genres are usually identified through codes and conventions, and ideologies and narratives. ‘ • Picnic- My next prop will be a picnic as the unknown text will come through whilst the couple are enjoying a romantic picnic. This therefore includes polysemic elements from both the horror and romance genre. • Camera/ Mobile Phone- My final prop will be a camera/mobile phone, which is what the couple will use to take selfies of each other on their romantic day out.
- 6. PRODUCTION • For the production of my film, I will be using my own camera to film as I believe this will be better quality. • I will be using a tripod that is supplied by school to ensure I can get steady shots that look professional. • I will be using the software of imovie to edit my film as this means it can be done in my own time (not relying on school computers) and I believe I know more about this software than Premiere Pro.
- 7. NARRATIVE • My narrative includes a couple (conventional male and female) whom are going on a day trip to the woods. However, the female begins to receive texts from an ‘unknown’ number, saying things like ‘we must be together’ etc. The couple are then sat having a picnic in the middle of the woods, when she receives another ‘unknown’ text saying ‘I can see you in the woods having a picnic, prepare for it to be ruined.’ They then begin to panic, however, as the male doesn’t return from going to ‘check out’ the area. The female begins to panic before a gun shot is then heard… • This is a postmodern short horror film as it includes many postmodern elements such as including a phone within the horror genre.
- 8. SOUND • I will be including dialogue within my narrative as this will imply to the audience what is happening within the narrative. I wont display my script on this pitch as it will give too much away as to what is going to happen within my story. • I will include special effects of a gun shot, as well as other special effects such as trees rustling in the wind etc. • I will also include a soundtrack when to create suspense when the killer is near or is about to attack the couple.
