One of the key strengths of JVM is automatic memory management (Garbage Collection). Its understanding can help in writing better applications. This becomes all the more important as enterprise server applications have large amount of live heap data and significant parallel threads. Until recently, main collectors were parallel collector and concurrent-mark-sweep (CMS) collector. This presentation introduces the various Garbage Collectors and compares the CMS collector against its replacement, a new implementation in Java7 i.e. G1. It is characterized by a single contiguous heap which is split into same-sized regions. In fact if your application is still running on the 1.5 or 1.6 JVM, a compelling argument to upgrade to Java 7 is to leverage G1.
At JavaOne keynote this year, Mark Reinhold talked about how Java 9 was much bigger than Jigsaw. To put that in numbers - 80+ JEPs bigger! Yes, we see more presentations on Jigsaw since it brings about modularity to the once monolithic JDK. But what about those other JEPs?! One of those "other" JEPs, is JEP 143 - 'Improve Contended Locking'. Monica will apply her performance engineering approach and talk about JEP 143 and Oracle's Studio Analyzer Performance Tool. The crux of the presentation will entail comparing performance of contended locks in JDK 9 to JDK 8.

This presentation is aimed to improve or refresh people’s knowledge on this core topic, and share a real use case when it helped us to resolve production issue.

Scylla is an open source reimplementation of Cassandra which performs up to 10X with drop in-replacement compatibility. At ScyllaDB, performance matters but even more importantly, stable performance under any circumstances.
A key factor for our consistent performance is our reliance on userspace schedulers. Scheduling in userspace allows the application, the database in our case to have better control on the different priorities each task has and to provide an SLA to selected operations. Scylla used to have an I/O scheduler and recently won a CPU scheduler.
At ScyllaDB, we make architectural decisions that provide not only low latencies but consistently low latencies at higher percentiles. This begins with our choice of language and key architectural decisions such as not using the Linux page-cache, and is fulfilled by autonomous database control, a set of algorithms, which guarantees that the system will adapt to changes in the workload. In the last year, we have made changes to Scylla that provide latencies that are consistent in every percentile. In this talk, Dor Laor will recap those changes and discuss what ScyllaDB is doing in the future.

Zinc is a new minimal cryptography API for the kernel that is in the process of being upstreamed. Rather than providing an abstracted framework, Zinc provides simple functions. This talk will address the design considerations of the new API, its approach to implementation choice and fuzzing, and touch on formally verified cryptography implementations. We’ll explore the difference between, on one hand, reference code for a particular algorithm, and on the other hand, the present crypto API with its large and complicated abstractions, and how Zinc fits into the middle of these extremes. We’ll also examine issues relating to using SIMD from kernel space and the costs associated with it, and what we can do about it.

This EKON 22 conference is about high performance on servers, written in the object pascal (Delphi / FPC) language. Profiling should be the first step to avoid premature optimization, which is the root of all evil (Knuth). But when some bottlenecks are identified, we introduce some simple architecture patterns (like caching or microservices), data structures and algorithms to make process actually faster, with minimal refactoring. It was a fun session about how to write faster code, ending up by looking at the Delphi CPU view – even if you don’t know assembly.
