The Parthenon was a temple built in the 5th century BC on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece dedicated to the goddess Athena. It was the largest temple built on the Greek mainland and a symbol of Athens' wealth and power. Some of its greatest sculptures are now located in the British Museum in London after being removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century. Despite facing earthquakes, fires, explosions, and looting over the past 2500 years, the Parthenon still stands today on the Acropolis in Athens.
