The Panama Canal is located in Panama and connects the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It has three locks - Gatun, Pedro Miguel, and Mira Flores - along its 80km length. Construction began in the late 1800s but was halted when France relinquished control. The US later bought the rights from France and took over construction, completing the project in 1914 after solving major engineering, health, and organizational challenges. In 1977, the US and Panama signed a treaty transferring control of the canal to Panama, with the full transfer completed on December 31, 1999. Panama now manages the canal through the Panama Canal Authority.
