The Panama Canal was built between 1904 and 1914 by the United States to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It cost $375 million to build and involved over 45,000 workers. In 1999, control of the canal was transferred to Panama in accordance with treaties signed in 1977. The canal is currently being expanded to accommodate larger, post-Panamax ships to keep up with growth in global shipping.
