The Origins Of Language and the types of language speakon
1. The Origins Of Language
An InvestigationOf The Emergence Of Human Speech
2. What is language?
A language is a system of conventional vocal signs by means of which
human beings communicate.
Language is one great barrier between a brute and man. (Max Muller)
3. Sources Of Language
The DivineSource
The Natural Sound Source. (The “Bow-wow” theory)
The Social Interaction Source. (The “Ye-he-ho” theory)
The Physical Adaptation Source (Lips, teeth, mouth, larynx and pharynx)
The Genetic Source
The “Mother-tongue” theory. (The “out-of-africa” theory)
The “Warning” theory.
The “ding-dong” theory.
The “pooh-pooh” theory.
4. The Divine Source
According to the Christian Theology God created Adam n then Adam was supposed to name
things in the Garden Of Eden. So we find an evidence here that the language is a gift to man
from God.
According to Hinduism language came from Sarasvati, wife of Brahma, creator of the universe.
If human infants were allowed to grow up without hearing any language around them, then
they would spontaneously begin using the original God-given language.
A few experiments have been carried out in order to discover the original divine language.
1. An Egyptian pharaoh tried the experiment with two newborn babies. After two years of isolation
except for the company of goats n a mute Shepherd, the childern uttered, not an Egyptian
word, but something that was identified as the phyrigian word bekos, meaning “bread”. He
concluded that phyrigian must be the original language.
2. King James carried out a similar experiment and the children were reported to have
spontaneously started speaking Hebrew.
5. The Natural Sound Source
This source contains the bow-wow theory that primitive words could have
been imitation of the natural sounds which early men and women heard
around them, Just like animal noises such as Moo, bark, hiss, meow etc.
Words that sound similar to the noises they describe are exampleof
Onomatopoeia.
6. The Social Interaction Source
This language source developed on the basis of human cooperativeefforts
and it is calledthe Yo-he-ho theory.
A group of early humans might have developeda set of hums, grunts,
groans and curses that were used when they were lifting and carrying large
bits of trees or lifeless hairy mammoths.
Groups are necessarily social organizations and, to maintain those
organizations, someform of communication is required, even it is just grunts
and curses.
7. The Physical Adaptation Source
If we look at the types of physical features humans possess, they may have
been able to support speech production.
It includes: teeth, lips, mouth, larynx and pharynx.
1. Human mouth is comparatively small to other primates. It can be opened
and closedinstantly so it can produce more sounds using tongue n other
vocal organs.
2. Human nose creates more air pressure in the mouth as compare to other
primates.
8. The Genetic Source
It is medically as well as psychologicallyproved that humans take
sometimes something and sometimes a lot from their ancestors.
Human offspring are born with a special capacity for language. It is innate.
It is genetically hard-wired in the newborn humans.
9. The Mother-tongue Theory
One original language spoken by a single group of Homo sapiens perhaps
as early as 150 thousands years ago gave rise to all human languages
spoken on earth today.
As humans colonizedvarious continents, this original Mother-tongue
divergened.
This theory is generally connected to the theory of human origin known as
the Out-of-africatheory.
10. The Warning Theory
Language may have evolvedfrom warning signals such as those used by
animals.
Perhaps language started with a warning to others, such as look out, Run,
or help to alert members of the tribes when some lumbering beast was
approaching.
11. The Ding-dong Theory
Language may have begun when humans started naming objects, actions
and phenomenaafter recognizable sound associatedwith it.
This hypothesis holds that the first human words were a type of verbal icon,
a sign whose form is an exact image of its meaning.
1. Crash: becomes the word for thunder.
2. Boom: for explosion.
12. The Pooh-Pooh Theory
This hypothesis holds the idea that first words came from involuntary
exclamations of dislike, hunger, pain or pleasure.
The first words would have been an involuntary ha-ha-ha, wa-wa-wa. These
began to be used to name the actions which caused these sounds.
13. Conclusion
The origins of language has always been a vague topic.
Some philologists and linguists argued that human speech derivedfrom
natural, instinctiveutterances that were shared with some animals, and
that languages developed and spread gradually according to various
natural laws and processes.
A few argued that language was uniquely human, a manifestationof
man's higher nature and an instrument of his reason. Its origin was Devine,
and its development more akin to an art, than to any purely natural
process.
