Presentation for TCEA 2015: “75-90% of learning in a classroom is visual. Improve visual literacy by utilizing online resources and incorporating photography into instruction so that students can read images as information sources and understand how to analyze, produce, and ethically-share images.”
Visual literacy is an important skill in our increasingly visual world.
This presentation will be shared at the Internet@Schools West Conference 2014 in Monterey, CA.
Visual skills are a necessary foundation for later speech and reading skills. In a highly visual world, the ability to understand visual imagery is a key information gathering ability.
Roadmap to Blended Learning (4 Nov 2011)Wesley Fryer
Where are we headed in K-12 education with respect to technology and learning? What are the vehicles ("ships" in this metaphor using the Waldseemüller map) that will take us into this future? What activities should characterize effective blended learning in the future? These are Wesley Fryer's slides for a presentation on these topics for New York educational leaders in November 2011.
Roadmap to Blended Learning (October 2013)Wesley Fryer
These are Dr. Wesley Fryer's slides for his October 4, 2013, presentation in Canandaigua , New York, for NYSCATE leaders. The session description was: What is blended learning and why should educators embrace it? How can we move towards a vision of blended learning in our schools? This session presents an OVERVIEW, WAYPOINTS, and DIRECTIONS for the Roadmap to Blended Learning.

At Yokohama International School we use Google Apps for just about everything from managing shared homework calendars for homeroom groups, to student rubrics for student/parent/teacher feedback, to assignment sheets, and Google Sites to store templates, forms and important documents. This session will share strategies for keeping yourself, students, colleagues and parents organized and running smoothly with the many options that Google Apps for Education provide.
A slightly diet version of former Slideshare Presentation of the Day, tweaked with added goodness the the Social Media Day, Preston - hosted by Tom Stables Creative and Duchess of Grange to celebrate the first international social media day.
A visually rich wake up call to those who think social media is something best left to other people.

Co-Create: Creating Better Together - Twinkle Tampere 2015Denise Jacobs
Despite the prevalent mythology of the lone creative genius, many of the most innovative contributions spring from the creative chemistry of a group and the blending of everyone’s ideas and concepts. How can we best leverage this collective wisdom to generate creative synergy and co-create? Let’s look at the process of recognizing and removing our personal creative blocks, connecting and communicating with others, combining ideas using play, and constructing a collaborative environment to discover effective methods for tapping into a group’s creative brilliance. Through these steps, you’ll learn to capitalize on the super-linearity of creativity to embrace and leverage diversity to create better together.

We are obsessed with coding and creating automated workflows and optimisations. And yet our final products aren't making it easy for people to use them. Somewhere, we lost empathy for our end users and other developers. Maybe it is time to change that. Here are some ideas.
PWA are a hot topic and it is important to understand that they are a different approach to apps than the traditional way of packaging something and letting the user install it. In this keynote you'll see some of the differences.
Keynote at halfstackconf 2017 discussing the falsehood of the idea that in order to survive the automation evolution everybody needs to learn how to code. Machines can code, too.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.
