The New World Of The American Revolution
Before the years of the United States as we know it, before the Civil War or the American
Revolution, back when explorer Christopher Columbus of Spain had taken his voyage over to North
America, the "New World", the British and Spanish, among others, had begun to lose faith in, and
loyalty to, their rulers, the Spanish and British monarchs, known as the Crowns, due to the excessive
taxation, the lack of religious freedom, and the shortage of wealth and minerals. It was then that they
set out to the New World to colonize it, obtain the necessary goods, and live there with pride. The
Spanish and British colonists relocated to the New World, North America, in search of improved
living conditions, and in rebellion against their respective countries' policies imposed by their
monarchs. The colonizations had first taken place shortly after Christopher Columbus' voyage to the
New World in 1492, at which point the colonists had realized the sheer opportunity that lied before
them. They did not flock to North America for all of the same reasons, however; in fact, many of
their incentives differed considerably from those of the colonists of the other country, and many of
them had undergone different experiences while residing in the New World. Specifically, both of
them had encountered the native American population, along with settlements of the Spanish and
French. Moreover, while colonizing different parts of North America, they had utilized the natives,
and later Africans,

British Colonies Dbq
Whether or not the colonization of the British colonies was organized, is debated by many historians
to this day. When the British arrived, they did not plan on colonizing the land. This alone shows that
their plans were not very well thought–out. In addition, they claimed the land without any legal
grounds, showing utter disrespect for those already living on it. Finally, they did not prepare
themselves for the completely different climate and resources they would face. These reasons,
among others, show that the settling of the British colonies was conducted in a haphazard manner. In
1607, the British arrived in what would someday be Jamestown, Virginia for the first time.
Jamestown was to be a temporary settlement. The British assumed they would find copious amounts
of gold in the New World, so they sent the settlers to mine it. Once the gold was mined, they
planned on returning to England, where the gold would be sold for profit. However, the British
failed to verify the presence of gold before the settlers arrived. Upon arrival, Jamestown settlers
were shocked to find absolutely no gold! This was just one of many poorly executed plans by the
British. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As far as European powers were concerned, these lands were free and for the taking, despite the
thousands of natives already occupying the area. Although French and Spanish people had their
differences with the natives, British differences were arguably the worst of the three. From the start,
many British colonists were hostile and aggressive towards the natives. They invaded their land,
took their resources and killed many. This led to years and years of wars with different native tribes.
Colonization efforts may have been easier if the British had been prepared to encounter the

European Colonization Of North America
The colonization and exploration of North America unavoidably lead to contact with the native
people of the land. The images created by people like Benjamin West, Thomas Kitchen, and James
Wooldridge show the effect that contact had on America. For example, Treaty with the Indians is an
oil painting by Benjamin West that depicts the colonists and William Penn, the founder of
Pennsylvania, negotiating a treaty with the American Indians during the late years of British
colonization. Benjamin West also painted The Indians Delivering up the English Captives to Colonel
Bouquet Near his Camp at the Forks of Muskingum in North America in November 1764, which
shows American Indians transporting English prisoners to Colonel Bouquet, an officer in the British
army, during the French and Indian War. Another artist, James Woolridge, painted Indians of
Virginia, which illustrates American Indians living on their homestead in 1675 during early British
colonization of North America. Thomas Kitchen created A Map of the French Settlements in North
America which shows the territories owned by the French a few years before Seven Years War and
during the time when British colonization had heightened. European colonists' opinions of
citizenship rights and the rightful occupation of North America was heavily influenced by their
interactions with the American Indians and their culture through manifested stereotypes and an
understood element of European superiority. In the late 1600s, a

Essay On How Did The British Colonization Of North America
"The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese." Of the three major colonizers
who vied for control of North America from the 15th to 17th centuries, it was the early–bird Spanish
who got the worm, but after all was said and done, it was England who got the more desirable
cheese. After 1763, the English had control of all land east of the Mississippi river and virtually all
of present–day Canada. The English were able to gain the upper hand in the conflict for control of
North America not only because of military victories, but also because of good timing. The English
victory over the Spanish Armada marked the beginning of the British naval dominance in the
Atlantic. England and Spain had been enjoying a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the Spanish out of the picture and Portugal busy with their own colonies in South America, the
time was right for England to grab their slice of the North American pie. The English victory over
Spain in 1588 sparked an English renaissance in taking to the sea. People became interested in
sailing, also because of the amazing treasures the newly knighted Sir Francis Drake was reaping in
from the West Indies. England had the financial capabilities to colonize, but they now needed
manpower to live in and maintain those colonies. And lucky for England, their timing was just right.
Britain's feudal system had created a large gap between their upper and lower classes. The members
of the lower class were looking to move up on the food chain by whatever means necessary. At that
time, the amount of land you owned signified your power, but in England, there was less available
land and a growing lower class. If the lower class couldn't find land to own in England, then they
would have to search elsewhere. At that time, there happened to be an entire continent of land
available across the sea. Meanwhile, people were being persecuted for their religious beliefs, and
they were not able to tolerate this anymore. People were turning to the New World with the hope of
a religious sanctuary. There was also the hope for a chance for a new start with their own religion,
and the opportunity to

Compare And Contrast American And French Colonization
In the early days of developing countries, each major empire had their own unique way to colonize
the land. Each empire had good qualities and bad, and each experienced pitfalls. The leading
empires in this time period was the Spaniards, the Dutch, the British, and the French. Each varying
technique of colonizing land helped each of these empires control most of the western hemisphere.
While there was several similarities, there was also many differences in the way each empire
conquered land. Regardless, they dominated this era from every part of the globe.
The Spanish expansion process lasted between the years 1492 to 1898. Spain designated men called
conquistadors to go out and look for, explore, and conquest land. Their main reasoning for obtaining
more land was to spread Christianity and trading purposes. A famous man ... Show more content on

North America, the Caribbean Islands, and South America were just a few of the areas in which the
French founded colonies. Like the Spaniards, the French began to occupy large amounts of the
western hemisphere. The French begun colonizing the new world for money and access to the
Pacific Ocean, but as they colonized more land they started using the colonies to export fish, furs,
and sugars. (French Colonization of the Americas). Though the French did try to colonize the
Americas, they were very unsuccessful simply because they were not acclimated to the climate and
were made very sick by the exposure to different diseases. Not only this, but the French had to
constantly battle attacks from the Indians attempting to push the French off their land. They also had
to deal with attacks from the Spaniards trying to take over the land the French were already trying to
colonize. Ultimately, most of the French colonies were short lived due to the disease and loss of land
to the other empires. (French Colonization of the

How Did Spain Influence North America
The history of the colonies focuses primarily around the struggle between the global superpowers
during that time period, Spain and Britain, to win control of North America. Prior to 1763, these
entities battled over territory on the continent, eventually leading the Britain's dominance. The
economic, social, and political differences between the Spanish and British colonization efforts
created the opportunity to Britain to overtake North America. To begin, economic factors greatly
contributed to the power of each entity. Both British and Spanish wealth flourished from the
economies of the colonies. Yet, the differences cause Britain to overshadow Spain. For instance, the
British colonies had a variety of economic activities, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conquistadores, soldiers, and missionaries were the first to colonize North America for the Spanish.
Not until later, did farmers and traders come. The different social classes between the colonies
created a completely different atmosphere, causing the British colonists to be more connected to the
development of the colonies and overall to the dominance of Britain. Therefore, the working
middle–class in the British colonies contributed to the economy and good welfare of Britain.
Moreover, the political set up in the British and Spanish colonies shows a lack in continuity between
the citizens and the government in Spanish colonies, causing unrest. The British colonies'
government was distance from England. To illustrate, both governments watched over the colonies.
The British colonies had a parliament and the Spanish colonies were governed by crown–appointed
viceroys or governors. However, the parliament in the British colonies was weak and allowed for the
colonies to establish their own governments under the condition that they did not fight against the
Crown. In the Spanish colonies, the government was much stricter. The settlers had to obey the
ling's laws and could make none of their own. The Spanish colonists were given no freedom to
expand themselves, causing resentment towards the Spanish crown and later political unrest.
Overall, strength resulted from the British

The Pros And Cons Of British Colonization In America
After the French and Indian War, Britain fell into great debt due to the costs of the war. Thus, in
order to solve their financial issues, Britain imposed taxes on the colonists, such as the Stamp Act,
Townshend Act, and the Tea Act. However, the colonists were appalled by these taxes as they felt
that they were not responsible for the debt nor the war, therefore, claiming that the British did not
have the right to tax them. As a response to these new policies, the colonists held various rebellions,
including the Boston Tea Party. However, despite being taxed by the British without representation,
the British policies in the colonies were completely justified as the colonists in America were still
part of the British empire, and were entirely responsible for the financial crisis in Britain. Upon
discovery of the New World, many countries began colonizing the land, and Britain's main goal in
America was to start colonization, and expand their empire into the new world–not to send off their
people away for good. Thus, despite being a different continent from England, the British colonies
in America were still part of the British empire. If America were to be excluded from these policies,
then the rest of Britain's colonies would have to be excluded as well–dwindling Britain's title as a
world power. During the beginning of colonization in America, the British colonists occupied most
of the east coast and looked to expanding more westward, into French territory, causing the

Power, Wealth And Morality In Colonization During The 1600's
Colonization during the 1600's brought hundreds of Europeans to America. They, up until that point
had only known the control and steady income of England. However, it did mean there were
problems within the colonies. Power was a struggle in colonial America considering the imbalance
of it. Wealth in the colonies wasn't much better especially after the French and Indian War. The
morality of the colonists. Power, wealth and morality were influencing factors on colonization, and
slightly problematic for the colonists.

There were also issues of wealth during European colonization. According to an article on
socialstudiesforkids.com "The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a
large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War". After the French–Indian War, Britain
was in debt from the funding they needed for the war, leading them to tax the colonists to pay off
this debt. This ultimately leads to the colonists declaring their independence in the form of the
Revolutionary War. Morality is the ability to know right from wrong. There were issues of morality
in colonial America including 1732 (the time of slave revoltings). According to Newspaper
advertisements from the New York Gazette on December 11, 1732 slave owners were paying others
to turn in runaway slaves for a reward. "Whoever takes up the said Servant, and will bring her to her

The Influence Of Western Imperialism
Western scientists proposed new ideas regarding biological races that enhanced their beliefs that
westerners are naturally superior than other groups. Europeans were convinced that colonization and
enslavement of other societies were justified and as a result imperialism of the western world began
and influenced the basis of America. By taking over these new colonies, such as India and Sri
Lanka, science was able to develop and incorporate new information on the origins of humanity
with respect to the organization of the natural world. Within the beginnings of Western imperialism,
America was able to develop and thrive from the influences of previous European activity, which
granted the advancement of science and thus entirely changed the definition of modern science. The
British invasion of India came after the desire of the East India Company wanting to grow trade and
thus required knowledge of the indigenous living in India, so they became highly interested in the
Sanskrit texts (Sivasundaram 130). The importance of such texts showed scientists that "India's
past...was glorified, and progress was tied not to the body or physiognomy but to language"
(Sivasundaram 131). This new discovery allowed for the intelligence of the culture of India to
change and demonstrated the differences among environments Europeans were not exposed to. The
anti–British Indian Mutiny of 1857 showcased Europeans taking over India and science develop as

The European And British Traders Essay
The European and British traders initially came to India for trading purposes. The Industrial
Revolution in Britain led to the increase in demand for raw materials for the factories there and at
the same time they also required a market to sell their finished products. India provided such a
platform to Britain to fulfill its needs. There was great political unrest within the country during the
18th century and with the declining power of the Mughals, the British officials gained an
opportunity to get hold of the Indian subcontinent. This was followed by a rapid expansion of
British power through the greater part of the Indian subcontinent in the early 19th century. By the
middle of the century the British had already gained direct or indirect control over almost all of the
region. British India, consisting of the directly–ruled British presidencies and provinces, was
established and contained the most populous and valuable parts of the British Empire The European
Colonies of the Indian Subcontinent are the areas of the Indian subcontinent which were under the
control of European colonial powers, through trade and conquest. The first European power to arrive
in the subcontinent was the army of Alexander the Great in present–day Eastern Afghanistan and
Western Pakistan in 327–326 BC. Later, trade was carried out between various Indian states and the
Roman Empire by Roman sailors who reached India via the Red and the Arabian Sea, but they never

British Colonization Of The Americas
British colonization of the Americas began in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. It reached its peak when
colonies has established throughout the America. The British ignored america in favor of subduing
and occupying Ireland, which is a promising colony closer to their homeland. In 1558, the half–
century reign of Elizabeth 1 began, England's interest to the other side of the Atlantic grew.
Elizabeth maneuvered through the difficulties of being a female monarch by refusing to marry,
having no kids, and maintaining a reputation for chastity. However, for the next paragraph, I will
initiate on how the British slowly colonized the Americas and how the representation of some of the
women was very important back in this century. First of all, the British which was run by Elizabeth
1 in the 1500s established her country's control of the seas and access to the New World's wealth. Sir
Walter Ralegh, who is one of Elizabeth's "favorite" men has granted dominion over the large,
undefined American territory north of the Spanish lands that Ralegh names Virginia to honor not the
Virgin Mary but the Virgin Queen. Even though Elizabeth did not get married she has a "favorite"
men which she trusted him and sent him to the America. In contrast to the highly Spanish queen,
Elizabeth was a thoroughly worldly monarch (pg24). She abjured the Catholic Church in favor of
heading the church of England, more as a source of political than spiritual identity and authority.

the main reasoning behind all of the colonization's. On their way to building these settlements, the

first of these nations to arrive in the new world was Spain, led by Christopher Columbus. In 1492,

Economic Imperialism and Colonial Control in Canada
Economic Imperialism and Colonial Control in Canada Abstract Economic imperialism plays an
important role in colonization. The goal of this paper is to discuss the colonial control of Canada and
how economics played an important role in dispossession of indigenous people of Canada. The
negative impact of economic imperialism included loss of land, disrupted communities and
exploitation of natural resources. In all cases, Canadian natives had to suffer the consequences of
colonization and economic imperialism. During the eighteenth century, when European powers
extended their power beyond Europe, they gained significant control and power over different
territories in Asia, Africa and North America. Important empires during that time included Britain
and France, which sought to gain maximum control as they competed with one another. British
power and presence was already strong in North America as compared to French power and
therefore, Canada primarily became a British colony. A colony is considered to be a territory, which
is ruled by another country. The term economic imperialism is considered to be an important term,
which describes the power and authority over assets and economics by a foreign entity. In terms of
modern economics, economic imperialism is considered to be an in–depth and comprehensive
investigation and study of economics, which is related to crime, irrational behavior, religion and
politics, that is, the non–economics aspects of society. The terms

Compare And Contrast The Age Of Imperialism From 1450 To 1900
The era from 1450 CE to 1900 CE encompasses two periods in history. The early modern period
between 1450 and 1750 CE is characterized by the age of commercial revolution and the beginning
of European dominance. The second period between 1750 and 1900 CE represents an era of Atlantic
and Industrial Revolutions as well as the Age of Imperialism. During both these periods, British
domination based on sea trade, colonization, and major land–based empires in Asia impacted long–
distance trade and shaped economic conditions in North America and China. Between 1450 and
1900 CE , British dominance resulted in global trade empires and a shift towards ocean–based trade
in North America and China. But even with these changes, there were continuities. ... Show more

During this time, the British adopted a new economic policy known as mercantilism which held that
a country's power depended mainly on its wealth. The desire for new sources of wealth inspired
British exploration of the East. Having established North America as their colony, the British
traveled East. In 1793, the British sought to trade with China which was largely self–sufficient due
to mining and manufacturing resources as well as its healthy agricultural economy which started in
the 11th century. Around this time, the Chinese dynasty cycle was in decline and its official trade
policy reflected isolation. The British imposed economic imperialism and forced China to open to
foreign trade and influence. The British East India Company which grew opium in India, a British
colony, shipped it to China. While the Chinese developed addictions to the drug, the British
economy grew as they shipped fine silk, high quality cotton and exquisite porcelain from China to
be sold for a huge profit in North America. Subjected to economic imperialism, China had to sign
treaties that favoured the west. In 1844, China signed a treaty that gave North America

The Importance Of The English Language
Did English achieve its world–wide status because of its linguistic features; in other words, because
it is more logical, more expressive, simpler or perhaps has a more richer vocabulary than other
languages? The answer to this question is no, English did not achieve its world– wide status because
of such reasons, it was not the language that was the cause but more the people who spoke it, more
accurately, discovered, conquered, traded, influenced and spread out their culture which their mother
tongue belonged to. This culture and society was that of the British Empire. However, one
contributing factor to the spread of English that is caused by the language itself, is its ability to
inherit words from other languages and cultures, whilst also being able to vary from country to
country whilst still maintaining its English title.
The British empire's mother tongue is English, with this being the case, wherever the British empire
travelled or expanded to, English would follow. A major example of this migration of
English away from the British Isles was the colonization of America. Before officially becoming the
United States of America, English was the most commonly spoken language, so when the founders
understood the importance of language for national Identity, English being the more common of the
many languages that were being spoken during the time, was chosen. Afterwards, an act that would

The English had a much larger population in their colonies than the Spanish, in fact, in 1700; there
was a total population of 250,000 in the English colonies compared to 4,500 in the Spanish. A larger
population in the colonies meant there was more manpower for work and, in addition, a greater
wealth development. This led to a greater distinction between the English and the Spanish, which
was the mass level by which slaves were used in colonial society. The Spanish too had similar ways
of acquiring cheap labor services by establishing the Encomienda system. This system, unlike the
English, exploited the Indians for personal profits rather than slaves imported from Africa. As
English colonies, particularly in the south, focused on establishing an agrarian society; the Spanish
did not focus as much on maintaining an agriculture based society. In marked contrast to England's
compact, densely populated settlements on the Atlantic, Spain established far–flung inland networks
of fortified trading posts and missions. Unlike the English, they were unable to attract large numbers
of colonists, and thus enlisted Native Americans as trading partners and military allies. The Catholic
nation had far greater success in converting natives to Christianity than their Protestant counterpart.

changes throughout the continent and, specifically, the British Empire. Through the Enlightenment
and increased commercial development, the British Empire grew tremendously in size as these two
factors led to more exploration and trade, colonization, and new economic theories. An idea from
the Enlightenment was the process of exploring more. In the 1580s, the English began exploring and

Colonialization In India And The Colonization Of India
You're trekking across the dangerous border between India and Pakistan. The year is 1947, and
you're so happy that you'll finally be able to move your family to a new state where Muslims are the
majority religion. But there is bloodshed and violence, and you're starting to question whether this
was all worth it. How did we even get to this point? British colonization of India, which began in
1696 with the Mughal rulers allowing the British East India Company a settlement (Choices), lasted
through two and a half centuries until 1947. This colonization was part of a massive wave of
imperialism that took place from the 1600s through the 1900s. Frantz Fanon, who witnessed the
colonization of Algeria firsthand, wrote a book called Wretched of the Earth about colonialism,
claiming that it is a violent act which aims to destroy native cultures and make the natives feel
inferior. Because of the severity of colonialism, decolonization must require violence as well. His
theories on colonialism were somewhat true for the British colonization of India.
Frantz Fanon argues that, between the natives and the colonizing power, "their first confrontation
was colored by violence and their cohabitation––continued at the point of the bayonet and under
cannon fire" (Fanon); in other words, colonization is, in its nature, a violent event. This was true for
the British colonization of India, but the type of violence used in this colonization was not

A White Man 's Burden, And Achebe 's Things Fall Apart
In history, colonization was a truly popular tradition practiced by great and powerful empires in
order to extract and retrieve all materials necessary to support their homeland. However, in order to
achieve such sense of commerce and well–being, those colonists who had the power, had to colonize
weaker and far less advanced societies. Great powers such as Britain and France would then travel
to these societies and implement their rule in order to gain prosperity. Some, those who benefited
from colonization, felt that the practice of colonization was an obligation to better the "uncivilized,"
societies and help them advance, but the emotional and physical hurt that came from colonizing
outweighed the positive aspects. The intention was good, but the manner in which colonization was
carried out was poor. This topic is immensely controversial that pieces such as Kipling's poem, "A
White Man's Burden," and Achebe's "Things Fall Apart," have been written in order to support or go
against colonization. But despite much debate, colonization has been a tradition that has caused
those regions being colonized much struggle and negativity. The novel Things Fall Apart, speaks of
the life of Umuofia2, a fictional Nigerian village, and its traditions before colonization and then the
changes it faces at the initiation of colonization. It is based around the life of a man named
Okonkwo before the colonists come and the struggles he faces when they arrive. Just as all other

Economic Factors Of The English Colonization Of North America
I believe that we cannot say that only one factor had an impact on English colonization, as both had
a fairly significant influence. In retrospect the fact that Economic factors did have a greater impact
remains true. Merchants that migrated to North America formed Jamestown as the first settlement
and were searching for fortune and a better living then they could have in England. Jamestown was
founded under the Virginia Company, these English joint stock companies were appointed for this
reason – to produce successful settlements. Another reason contributing to the English colonization
of North America were the economic problems and concerns that plagued the English. For this
reason they went to the Americas in search of raw materials such as gold and silver. Even people
that were not merchants, or wealthy businessmen migrated to Americas solely for the bettering of
their and their loved ones lives, by farming or other jobs available at the time. Others ... Show more

King Henry VIII forced the Anglican Church upon English men which some obviously did not want

Positive And Negative Effects Of American Imperialism
In my point of view, the colonial period shifted the balance previously present throughout the world,
in which imperialism had less relevance in everyday lives. Before the colonial period, the natives
living in the Americas and the Caribbeans, mainly had internal fighting or conflicts between rival
tribes. While in Europe, the most tension occurred between major empires competing for trade, land,
recourses, and wealth. However, once the Europeans began colonizing America, both of the worlds
collided in a massive fight for sovereignty and wealth. This can be seen in each country's
colonization of America. In the French colonization, the colonist traded advanced weaponry to the

Although the colonial period, portrayed a time in which a variety of people were severely abused
and many conflicts were provoked, there were also many positive sides towards the American
colonization. This positive side promoted societal growth and increased numerous countries` wealth
dramatically. For example, the English found an outlet to employ many of their low class peasants in
their Chesapeake colonization, and also found a way to produce large amounts of rice, tobacco, and
many more exports. In addition to obtaining expensive goods and recourses, American colonization
gave European empires the opportunity to expand their rule across oceans. However, In some
situations this reaped negative results, such as the British attempt to excessively control their
colonies by unconstitutionally issuing new taxes. One can even go as far to say that American
colonization led to the separation of the British empire. Thus, there were both positive and negative
aspects towards American colonization, but if all the senseless deaths were worth the society we

they had corn and spices that the Spanish took over very soon, by force. The Indians never had the
chance to defend their territory; they fought against gun, cannons and a real big army.
The Spanish were seeking for gold that was the most important reason for their colonist, and they
used every way to get it, that by the way was the violence they got everything they wanted killing
Indians and they kill every Indian on their way. The problem was that they could not found as much
gold as they wanted so the king got desperate and sent more military to slave the Indians and search
for more gold.
When the Spanish started to bring the religious to the new world the Spanish monks found that the
Indians had very strange gods so they begun to christianize them by force prohibit them to see their

Compare And Contrast English Colonization And Spanish...
From the mid 1500's to the 1700's, people from all over Europe flocked to the vast lands of North
America. Spain and England quickly became the most dominant European presences in the
Americas. Citizens of the two countries had very different experiences in the New World. This was
partially due to their different interactions with Native Americans, religions and their different
motivations for coming to the New World. Although rivals at the time, Spain and England's
colonization efforts shared many similarities. Motivation for coming to the New World greatly
influenced Spanish and British colonization. The Spanish are said to have had three distinct reasons;
God, glory and gold. God meaning the conversion of natives, glory meaning the claiming of new
land for the Spanish empire and gold meaning the desire to find gold to bring wealth back to Spain.
The British colony of Jamestown shared the desire to find gold. Unlike the Spaniards, the British
didn't plan on permanently settling in America. However, these plans changed and Jamestown
became a settlement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The British relied on the Algonquians to exchange goods for food, and to teach them how to survive
on the strange land. The Spaniards took advantage of the Pueblos, forcing them to work on farms
and to follow their religion. In the end, both relationships with the Native Americans fell apart.
Pueblo Indians became tired of being treated so poorly, and launched attacks on the Spaniards. In
contrast, British colonists initiated the aggression towards the Algonquians after the Algonquians
withdrew all contact. As you can see, the British had a positive and equal relationship with the
natives for the most part. While the Spaniards always had a negative and controlling relationship
with the natives. Both the Spanish and the British could not have survived without the Native

The Role Of European Colonization In The 17th And 18th...
Colonization within the Americas of the 17th and 18th centuries took many different forms.
Analysis indicates that the European colonizing powers observed many similar policies, tactics, and
motivations in relation to the colonization of American territory. For example, all exploited Africans
as slaves, had economic interests, and subjected native peoples to subjugation. Among the
colonizing powers the United Provinces of the Netherlands stood apart as being unique in their
approach to colonization and the administration of their colonies. The Dutch had little or no interest
in acquiring or administering a vast strategic empire to gain superior position in relation to its
European neighbors. The primary motivation of the United Provinces was to exploit the natural
resources and the native peoples for economic gain. This was accomplished by the founding of
small trading depots at American harbors in which were built port facilities. This enabled the Dutch
to build a worldwide trading network that grew to become the largest and most ... Show more

In addition, the Dutch acted a middlemen for other colonial powers and their mercantile contacts.
This position as middleman is unique to Dutch colonization. Many researchers from several
disciplines have explored this aspect of the colonial period. Corinne Hofman and her peers
conducted an archaeological study of the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and how the arrival of
Europeans affected the culture and society of the islands in their article Stage of Encounters:
Migration, Mobility and Interaction in the Pre–Colonial and Early Colonial Caribbean. The authors
give a good historical overview of native Caribbean populations in the pre–Colombian period. With
the use of archaeological finds, they explain migration patterns, mobility, and economic activities
within and between the islands of the West Indies. It is explained that the native peoples

As a small island country with a strong sense of superiority to natives, Britain focused more on
establishing permanent settlements for its booming population rather than religious conversion of
natives or diplomacy in its colonization of the New World. This bled into the American ideals of
western expansion and disregard for those who stand in their way. British colonies began with less
interest in natives altogether than their European rivals. The British preferred to focus on their own
settlements and goals without regard for the natives that had lived on their land before them. There
was a centralized focus on establishing a permanent settlement; therefore, the British, like the
Dutch, did not attempt to convert many natives to Christianity as it was a lesser concern. From the
very start of Spanish and French colonization, one could see that religious conversion is a pressing
goal for both empires, beginning with Columbus's initial assessment of the natives' ability to be
converted to Christianity. Columbus wrote, "...in order that they may conceive affection, and
furthermore be made Christian; for they are inclined to the love and service of their Highnesses..."
(Columbus 6). He emphasizes that they are easily convertible and that they already hold affection
for the Spanish. This is similar to the French colonization method in theory but not in practice. Both
France and Spain had large mission systems, France through close–proximity Jesuit missions and

Colonialism: The Ideas And Cons Of Imperialism
The truth is that imperialism was never idealistic. It has always been driven by economic or strategic
interests."
Imperialism itself, although is sometimes meant to educate, is ultimately formed by an empire's
selfish desire to rule land. This is evident in the New Manifest destiny, carried out by the U.S, the
British empire's rule on several countries, as well as the Britain's colonization of Africa many years
ago that still takes a toll on them today. Although, in some cases imperialism is meant to educate
instead of take–over. But, most countries who showed forms of imperialism had economic and
strategic interests.
Although it can be argued, the British empire could have colonized countries such as India to help
them strive as a country. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Summary Of The European Colonization
In the year following Christopher Columbus's "discovery" of America, European powers began to
turn their attention to the prospect of colonizing the newly discovered land. With the discovered land
seemingly expanding with each new exploration, the possibilities for expansion both territorially
and religiously were extremely appealing to these countries and in time they made their way across
the sea and established their colonies each with their own style or rule which revealed its efficiency
in time (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 19). The European move to colonize began with a major
world trading force, the Chinese, stepping out of the way. With their initial motivation being a
demonstration of power, their large ships and sailing experience gave them every opportunity to take
the lead. However without a real desire to expand and colonize they stepped aside (Eric Foner, Give
Me Liberty!, 15). Portugal and Spain became the next major players in the game of colonization.
Portugal being the farthest country on the Iberian Peninsula needed a way to be included in the trade
with Asia, prompting them to create bigger and faster boats to take them down the African coast
(Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 15). Their creation of new technologies and colonization of the
Africa paved the way for them to establish trade routes with the new world (Eric Foner, Give Me
Liberty!, 17). Unfortunately, Portugal was not able to economically or politically back any
expeditions to the new world which

Colonialism is a significant part of history especially in North America. North America was
originally colonized by Europeans in the 10th century by Norse sailors who colonized what are now
parts of Greenland and Canada, followed later by many European nations including; Great Britain,
France, and Spain. The most notorious and first of these Europeans was Christopher Columbus who
began colonizing America in 1492 on behalf of Spain. The reason for Christopher Columbus even
finding North America was an accident due to he was sailing west in hopes of an alternate route to
India but instead landed in the Caribbean. However though he was unsuccessful, this event opened

The main similarity is that both revolutions involved getting away from British rule and both used
violence at some point. Although in the Indian revolution violence was not successful. Also in both
revolutions the British tried to use force to halt the revolutions early on by sending soldiers to
collect taxes in the United States and sending soldiers to end the Indian rebellion of 1857. However
the tactics used by the revolutionaries differed dramatically. In the Indian revolution the
revolutionaries refused to work and started to only buy Indian goods which had huge effects on the
British economy that were relying on these transactions where as in the American revolution the
tactic was to simply use force to drive the British out. (Sharma, S., 2010).

African Slavery And The New World 's Demographic Profile
Definition Colonialism is the establishment, exploitation, maintenance, acquisition, and expansion
of colony in one territory by a political power from another territory. It is a set of unequal
relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the
indigenous population. Colonization is the act of setting up a colony away from one 's place of
origin. Colonists settled British North America for different reasons. Some came for profits; others
came for religious freedom. For those colonies established for profit, the British Crown granted
charters to venturing proprietors or joint–stock companies. Yet, whatever the reason for coming,
whatever the type of colony, when English settlers arrived they encountered native populations and
Spanish and French settlements. Significantly, African slavery altered the New World 's
demographic profile in the early 1600s. Interacting cultures within distinct geographic settings and
economic circumstances resulted in unique histories for early colonies such as Roanoke, Jamestown,
Plymouth and South Carolina. South Carolina, for instance, capitalized on low country rice
cultivation through the labor of enslaved Africans. Further, South Carolina withstood threats from
the Spanish in St. Augustine and from warring natives such as the Weston, Yamasee, and Cherokee.
The histories of Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, and South Carolina reveal four very different
examples of British colonization in the New World

Economic Causes Of British Settlement In North America Essay
Although England's religious turmoil played a role in the development of British settlements,
England's economic problems fueled much of the settling of British North America. England's
economic situation caused many settlers to come for economic success rather than religious
freedoms. Colonists fled to Massachusetts Bay not only to escape religious persecution but also
economic decline. Settlers sent by the Virginia Company were attracted by the promises and
opportunities to live a better life. Economics soon became the underlying reason for colonization in
North America.
Economic concerns of England caused the colonization of British North America. From 1550 to
1600, England's population rose from 3 million to 4 million. Due to the high population, landlords
began enclosing croplands, causing many small farmers to become landless. High unemployment
rates along with a desire for adventure and religious freedom presented a solution to solve economic
problems and restore England to its glory. Their belief in mercantilism caused them to search for
new land to grow products and supply their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Protestant religion were often abused and persecuted. Religious groups such as the Puritans were

England's economy . Many of the woolen districts that were enclosed were the areas where
Puritanism was the strongest. Many Puritans were kicked off of the land and forced into the crowded
streets of London. The Puritans migrated to North America in search of a place where they could
freely practice their religion. They settled in Plymouth colony which merged with Massachusetts
Bay in 1691. Along with religion, Massachusetts Bay relied on economic trade to survive. They

Differences Between Britain And Spanish Colonization
Britain and Spain shared similar motivations for colonization, but their colonies were vastly
different in many aspects due to differences in their own government and policies. Both countries
created colonies to increase their wealth and expand their economies, but religious freedom played a
factor in British colonization. The fundamental differences between the two countries led to a
difference in the way the colonies of each country interacted with its government. The relationship
of British and Spanish colonists with Native Americans also reflected the differences in the motives
and the government of Britain and Spain. The governing bodies of Britain and Spain shared largely
similar motives in their exploration and colonization of the ... Show more content on

The British Parliament took a hands–off approach in the maintenance of its colonies; it allowed
colonists set up whichever governments and policies they felt were most beneficial to them. The
Spanish monarchy, in contrast, maintained rigid control over its colonies by appointing their
governors and creating their laws without allowing colonists to have a voice in their policies. The
approaches of their respective governments caused vast differences in the economies of the British
and Spanish colonies. British colonies relied on a variety of activities for survival, including farming
and trading; the governments and the locations of each colony determined how it could best support
itself. The economic activity of Spanish colonies was, again, much more rigid. Spanish colonies had
a near–universal trading economy, and trade was strictly controlled by the Spanish monarchy and
enforced by its military. The approaches Britain and Spain had towards colonization were reflected
in their treatment of Native Americans. Ultimately, both countries were primarily interested in the
expansion of their empires, the enrichment of their economies and their own political power, and
their treatment of the natives is indicative of these aims. As Spain's only purpose for colonization
was to conquer land for their empire, the

Abraham Lincoln And The Colonization Of Liberia
By no means was Abraham Lincoln the first to campaign for colonization. The idea of colonization
in America dates back to the Founding Fathers and their own struggle with slavery and racial
inequality in a country only in its infancy and founded on equality. Institutionalized in 1816, the
American Colonization Society (ACS) sought to drive consenting freed blacks to West Africa to
establish what is now modern–day Liberia. Founded in 1822, Liberia served as the prime example
upon which later colonization attempts would be modeled. With a second wave of colonization
interest in the 1850's as an outcome of sectional strife and the drive for political moderation, it was
in this context that Lincoln inherited the colonization mantle. Featured ... Show more content on

Despite Kock's claims to have diplomatic arrangements with Haiti for United States' colonization of
the land being largely unsubstantiated, the United States undertook a contract with Kock on the Eve
of the final Emancipation Proclamation for the transportation of 5,000 blacks to the island. Despite
rumors emanating of his shady character and suspicions rising of his personal interest in the matter,
Kansas State Senator Samuel Pomeroy was appointed to the role of Lincoln's agent for the Chiriqui
colonization proposal. "Entrusted with $25,000 from the federal fund, some of it still unaccounted
for, Pomeroy had become the target not only of colonization's critics but its supporters as well."
Great caution should be taken when utilizing such a small portion of Hay's diary entry as proof of
Lincoln's sudden "change of heart" with regard to post–Emancipation Proclamation colonization.
Attribution to Lincoln in this instance could be more accurately characterized by acknowledging
that this entry was likely prompted by Lincoln's signing of the Sundry Civil Expenses Act of 1864
only days prior to the diary entry. A massive bill with an ambiguous "rider" attached repealing all
federal funding for colonization, the Sundry Civil Expenses Act was more so a Senate budgetary
decision rather than an outright expression by Lincoln repudiating

Simply put, colonization is an ongoing process of control by which a central system of power
dominates the surrounding land and its components. This means that a foreign government moves
into the land and seizes control; gaining power, natural resources, and a larger economy. In the year

When the British did begin colonization of the Americas, the lands they acquired were regarded as
the leftovers. It wasn't until the nineteenth century that the prosperity shifted, with the British taking
the upper hand. They had succeeded in their colonization efforts. What were once little settlements
along the East Coast of North America, flourished out of the colonial period into the United States
of America and breaking free from British rule. The United States were more economically
successful, more politically successful, and had more international power than the once–prosperous
and divided colonization of Latin America. European colonization did not stop at the Americas. In
the eyes of many, the Europeans were very greedy and that greed and competition between the
European countries eventually led to the efforts to colonize Africa starting in 1870. For a thirty–year
period following 1870, Africa faced European imperialist aggression, diplomatic pressures, military

Causes Of The Age Of Exploration
Spain and Britain were two of the most prominent European nations involved in the colonization of
the Americas. Both countries, like other European countries, were driven to settle the newfound
landmass by a combination of related motives. However, situations in each country also influenced
the specific path that the nation took to precedence in the Americas. The means by which
governments, explorers, and citizens attained what they needed for themselves or their country also
differed throughout Europe. Spain and Britain were motivated by similar mercantilist ideas, but after
analysis of these motives, differences in the involvement of religion and riches are evident.
As aforementioned, both nations, at a basic level, were propelled by related ambitions. Among these
akin ideas were "god, glory, and gold", a term used to describe the main causes of the Age of
Exploration. "God" represents each country's desire to spread its religion, or an emigrating group's
quest for religious freedom. After that, "glory" pays respect to the fact that European conflicts
reflected onto conquest in the Americas, contributing to European countries' strive for power and
prestige. Finally, "gold" refers to nations' need to acquire extra resources, raw materials, and money.
European countries that invested in American conquest could profit from the utilization of new
quicker Asian trade routes, slave trade involving Native Americans and mainly Africans, and the
mining of gold and silver in the

These nations endured some resistance somehow from the local natives of Ghana. In 1807, the tribal
kingdom of Asante, hoping to expand its rule from the interior part of Ghana, invaded the coastal
parts of Ghana (Richards, 2005). The British and the Dutch needed to consent to them, or else their
exchange would tumble incredibly; in this way, in 1817, following several more years of strikes by
the Asante warriors, The British and the Dutch governments came to terms with the Asantes
(Richards, 2005). The British and the Dutch people signed a friendship treaty that gave the Asante
peoples substantial amounts of land on the coastal areas of Gold Coast (Richards, 2005). Later in
1874, after the Asante had lost their last trading ports in the Elmina fortress, the Asante were back
again battling The British. Be that as it may, it did not end so well. So, The British mobilized other
African auxiliaries and assumed control over Kumasi and finally burnt, the Asante capital (Soyinka,
2008). Ghana was once known as the "Gold Coast" by virtue of how much gold it had. The
Europeans exchanged their merchandise, for one of the most precious and valuable metals around
even in these modern days.

The New World Of The American Revolution

  • 1. The New World Of The American Revolution Before the years of the United States as we know it, before the Civil War or the American Revolution, back when explorer Christopher Columbus of Spain had taken his voyage over to North America, the "New World", the British and Spanish, among others, had begun to lose faith in, and loyalty to, their rulers, the Spanish and British monarchs, known as the Crowns, due to the excessive taxation, the lack of religious freedom, and the shortage of wealth and minerals. It was then that they set out to the New World to colonize it, obtain the necessary goods, and live there with pride. The Spanish and British colonists relocated to the New World, North America, in search of improved living conditions, and in rebellion against their respective countries' policies imposed by their monarchs. The colonizations had first taken place shortly after Christopher Columbus' voyage to the New World in 1492, at which point the colonists had realized the sheer opportunity that lied before them. They did not flock to North America for all of the same reasons, however; in fact, many of their incentives differed considerably from those of the colonists of the other country, and many of them had undergone different experiences while residing in the New World. Specifically, both of them had encountered the native American population, along with settlements of the Spanish and French. Moreover, while colonizing different parts of North America, they had utilized the natives, and later Africans, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. British Colonies Dbq Whether or not the colonization of the British colonies was organized, is debated by many historians to this day. When the British arrived, they did not plan on colonizing the land. This alone shows that their plans were not very well thought–out. In addition, they claimed the land without any legal grounds, showing utter disrespect for those already living on it. Finally, they did not prepare themselves for the completely different climate and resources they would face. These reasons, among others, show that the settling of the British colonies was conducted in a haphazard manner. In 1607, the British arrived in what would someday be Jamestown, Virginia for the first time. Jamestown was to be a temporary settlement. The British assumed they would find copious amounts of gold in the New World, so they sent the settlers to mine it. Once the gold was mined, they planned on returning to England, where the gold would be sold for profit. However, the British failed to verify the presence of gold before the settlers arrived. Upon arrival, Jamestown settlers were shocked to find absolutely no gold! This was just one of many poorly executed plans by the British. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As far as European powers were concerned, these lands were free and for the taking, despite the thousands of natives already occupying the area. Although French and Spanish people had their differences with the natives, British differences were arguably the worst of the three. From the start, many British colonists were hostile and aggressive towards the natives. They invaded their land, took their resources and killed many. This led to years and years of wars with different native tribes. Colonization efforts may have been easier if the British had been prepared to encounter the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. European Colonization Of North America The colonization and exploration of North America unavoidably lead to contact with the native people of the land. The images created by people like Benjamin West, Thomas Kitchen, and James Wooldridge show the effect that contact had on America. For example, Treaty with the Indians is an oil painting by Benjamin West that depicts the colonists and William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, negotiating a treaty with the American Indians during the late years of British colonization. Benjamin West also painted The Indians Delivering up the English Captives to Colonel Bouquet Near his Camp at the Forks of Muskingum in North America in November 1764, which shows American Indians transporting English prisoners to Colonel Bouquet, an officer in the British army, during the French and Indian War. Another artist, James Woolridge, painted Indians of Virginia, which illustrates American Indians living on their homestead in 1675 during early British colonization of North America. Thomas Kitchen created A Map of the French Settlements in North America which shows the territories owned by the French a few years before Seven Years War and during the time when British colonization had heightened. European colonists' opinions of citizenship rights and the rightful occupation of North America was heavily influenced by their interactions with the American Indians and their culture through manifested stereotypes and an understood element of European superiority. • 7. Essay On How Did The British Colonization Of North America "The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese." Of the three major colonizers who vied for control of North America from the 15th to 17th centuries, it was the early–bird Spanish who got the worm, but after all was said and done, it was England who got the more desirable cheese. After 1763, the English had control of all land east of the Mississippi river and virtually all of present–day Canada. The English were able to gain the upper hand in the conflict for control of North America not only because of military victories, but also because of good timing. The English victory over the Spanish Armada marked the beginning of the British naval dominance in the Atlantic. England and Spain had been enjoying a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the Spanish out of the picture and Portugal busy with their own colonies in South America, the time was right for England to grab their slice of the North American pie. The English victory over Spain in 1588 sparked an English renaissance in taking to the sea. People became interested in sailing, also because of the amazing treasures the newly knighted Sir Francis Drake was reaping in from the West Indies. England had the financial capabilities to colonize, but they now needed manpower to live in and maintain those colonies. And lucky for England, their timing was just right. Britain's feudal system had created a large gap between their upper and lower classes. The members of the lower class were looking to move up on the food chain by whatever means necessary. At that time, the amount of land you owned signified your power, but in England, there was less available land and a growing lower class. If the lower class couldn't find land to own in England, then they would have to search elsewhere. At that time, there happened to be an entire continent of land available across the sea. Meanwhile, people were being persecuted for their religious beliefs, and they were not able to tolerate this anymore. People were turning to the New World with the hope of a religious sanctuary. There was also the hope for a chance for a new start with their own religion, and the opportunity to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Compare And Contrast American And French Colonization In the early days of developing countries, each major empire had their own unique way to colonize the land. Each empire had good qualities and bad, and each experienced pitfalls. The leading empires in this time period was the Spaniards, the Dutch, the British, and the French. Each varying technique of colonizing land helped each of these empires control most of the western hemisphere. While there was several similarities, there was also many differences in the way each empire conquered land. Regardless, they dominated this era from every part of the globe. The Spanish expansion process lasted between the years 1492 to 1898. Spain designated men called conquistadors to go out and look for, explore, and conquest land. Their main reasoning for obtaining more land was to spread Christianity and trading purposes. A famous man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... North America, the Caribbean Islands, and South America were just a few of the areas in which the French founded colonies. Like the Spaniards, the French began to occupy large amounts of the western hemisphere. The French begun colonizing the new world for money and access to the Pacific Ocean, but as they colonized more land they started using the colonies to export fish, furs, and sugars. (French Colonization of the Americas). Though the French did try to colonize the Americas, they were very unsuccessful simply because they were not acclimated to the climate and were made very sick by the exposure to different diseases. Not only this, but the French had to constantly battle attacks from the Indians attempting to push the French off their land. They also had to deal with attacks from the Spaniards trying to take over the land the French were already trying to colonize. Ultimately, most of the French colonies were short lived due to the disease and loss of land to the other empires. (French Colonization of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. How Did Spain Influence North America The history of the colonies focuses primarily around the struggle between the global superpowers during that time period, Spain and Britain, to win control of North America. Prior to 1763, these entities battled over territory on the continent, eventually leading the Britain's dominance. The economic, social, and political differences between the Spanish and British colonization efforts created the opportunity to Britain to overtake North America. To begin, economic factors greatly contributed to the power of each entity. Both British and Spanish wealth flourished from the economies of the colonies. Yet, the differences cause Britain to overshadow Spain. For instance, the British colonies had a variety of economic activities, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conquistadores, soldiers, and missionaries were the first to colonize North America for the Spanish. Not until later, did farmers and traders come. The different social classes between the colonies created a completely different atmosphere, causing the British colonists to be more connected to the development of the colonies and overall to the dominance of Britain. Therefore, the working middle–class in the British colonies contributed to the economy and good welfare of Britain. Moreover, the political set up in the British and Spanish colonies shows a lack in continuity between the citizens and the government in Spanish colonies, causing unrest. The British colonies' government was distance from England. To illustrate, both governments watched over the colonies. The British colonies had a parliament and the Spanish colonies were governed by crown–appointed viceroys or governors. However, the parliament in the British colonies was weak and allowed for the colonies to establish their own governments under the condition that they did not fight against the Crown. In the Spanish colonies, the government was much stricter. The settlers had to obey the ling's laws and could make none of their own. The Spanish colonists were given no freedom to expand themselves, causing resentment towards the Spanish crown and later political unrest. Overall, strength resulted from the British ... • 13. The Pros And Cons Of British Colonization In America After the French and Indian War, Britain fell into great debt due to the costs of the war. Thus, in order to solve their financial issues, Britain imposed taxes on the colonists, such as the Stamp Act, Townshend Act, and the Tea Act. However, the colonists were appalled by these taxes as they felt that they were not responsible for the debt nor the war, therefore, claiming that the British did not have the right to tax them. As a response to these new policies, the colonists held various rebellions, including the Boston Tea Party. However, despite being taxed by the British without representation, the British policies in the colonies were completely justified as the colonists in America were still part of the British empire, and were entirely responsible for the financial crisis in Britain. Upon discovery of the New World, many countries began colonizing the land, and Britain's main goal in America was to start colonization, and expand their empire into the new world–not to send off their people away for good. Thus, despite being a different continent from England, the British colonies in America were still part of the British empire. If America were to be excluded from these policies, then the rest of Britain's colonies would have to be excluded as well–dwindling Britain's title as a world power. During the beginning of colonization in America, the British colonists occupied most of the east coast and looked to expanding more westward, into French territory, causing the ... • 15. Power, Wealth And Morality In Colonization During The 1600's Colonization during the 1600's brought hundreds of Europeans to America. They, up until that point had only known the control and steady income of England. However, it did mean there were problems within the colonies. Power was a struggle in colonial America considering the imbalance of it. Wealth in the colonies wasn't much better especially after the French and Indian War. The morality of the colonists. Power, wealth and morality were influencing factors on colonization, and slightly problematic for the colonists. Power is the ability to have control or influence over someone or something. According to an article on socialstudiesforkids.com "The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War". After the French–Indian War, Britain was in debt from the funding they needed for the war, leading them to tax the colonists to pay off this debt. This ultimately leads to the colonists declaring their independence in the form of the Revolutionary War. • 17. The Influence Of Western Imperialism Western scientists proposed new ideas regarding biological races that enhanced their beliefs that westerners are naturally superior than other groups. Europeans were convinced that colonization and enslavement of other societies were justified and as a result imperialism of the western world began and influenced the basis of America. By taking over these new colonies, such as India and Sri Lanka, science was able to develop and incorporate new information on the origins of humanity with respect to the organization of the natural world. Within the beginnings of Western imperialism, America was able to develop and thrive from the influences of previous European activity, which granted the advancement of science and thus entirely changed the definition of modern science. The British invasion of India came after the desire of the East India Company wanting to grow trade and thus required knowledge of the indigenous living in India, so they became highly interested in the Sanskrit texts (Sivasundaram 130). The importance of such texts showed scientists that "India's past...was glorified, and progress was tied not to the body or physiognomy but to language" (Sivasundaram 131). This new discovery allowed for the intelligence of the culture of India to change and demonstrated the differences among environments Europeans were not exposed to. • 19. The European And British Traders Essay The European and British traders initially came to India for trading purposes. The Industrial Revolution in Britain led to the increase in demand for raw materials for the factories there and at the same time they also required a market to sell their finished products. India provided such a platform to Britain to fulfill its needs. There was great political unrest within the country during the 18th century and with the declining power of the Mughals, the British officials gained an opportunity to get hold of the Indian subcontinent. This was followed by a rapid expansion of British power through the greater part of the Indian subcontinent in the early 19th century. By the middle of the century the British had already gained direct or indirect control over almost all of the region. British India, consisting of the directly–ruled British presidencies and provinces, was established and contained the most populous and valuable parts of the British Empire The European Colonies of the Indian Subcontinent are the areas of the Indian subcontinent which were under the control of European colonial powers, through trade and conquest. The first European power to arrive in the subcontinent was the army of Alexander the Great in present–day Eastern Afghanistan and Western Pakistan in 327–326 BC. Later, trade was carried out between various Indian states and the Roman Empire by Roman sailors who reached India via the Red and the Arabian Sea, but they never sought trading ... • 21. British Colonization Of The Americas British colonization of the Americas began in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. It reached its peak when colonies has established throughout the America. The British ignored america in favor of subduing and occupying Ireland, which is a promising colony closer to their homeland. In 1558, the half– century reign of Elizabeth 1 began, England's interest to the other side of the Atlantic grew. Elizabeth maneuvered through the difficulties of being a female monarch by refusing to marry, having no kids, and maintaining a reputation for chastity. However, for the next paragraph, I will initiate on how the British slowly colonized the Americas and how the representation of some of the women was very important back in this century. First of all, the British which was run by Elizabeth 1 in the 1500s established her country's control of the seas and access to the New World's wealth. Sir Walter Ralegh, who is one of Elizabeth's "favorite" men has granted dominion over the large, undefined American territory north of the Spanish lands that Ralegh names Virginia to honor not the Virgin Mary but the Virgin Queen. Even though Elizabeth did not get married she has a "favorite" men which she trusted him and sent him to the America. In contrast to the highly Spanish queen, Elizabeth was a thoroughly worldly monarch (pg24). She abjured the Catholic Church in favor of heading the church of England, more as a source of political than spiritual identity and authority. Differently from the Catholic ... By the mid 1960's, all these great nations were in a race to establish American colonies. Like in every expedition, the primary purposes were to gain wealth and riches, which was the main reasoning behind all of the colonization's. On their way to building these settlements, the colonials encountered the Native Americans and had to deal with them in very different ways. • 25. Economic Imperialism and Colonial Control in Canada Economic Imperialism and Colonial Control in Canada Abstract Economic imperialism plays an important role in colonization. The goal of this paper is to discuss the colonial control of Canada and how economics played an important role in dispossession of indigenous people of Canada. The negative impact of economic imperialism included loss of land, disrupted communities and exploitation of natural resources. In all cases, Canadian natives had to suffer the consequences of colonization and economic imperialism. During the eighteenth century, when European powers extended their power beyond Europe, they gained significant control and power over different territories in Asia, Africa and North America. Important empires during that time included Britain and France, which sought to gain maximum control as they competed with one another. British power and presence was already strong in North America as compared to French power and therefore, Canada primarily became a British colony. A colony is considered to be a territory, which is ruled by another country. The early modern period between 1450 and 1750 CE is characterized by the age of commercial revolution and the beginning of European dominance. The second period between 1750 and 1900 CE represents an era of Atlantic and Industrial Revolutions as well as the Age of Imperialism. During both these periods, British domination based on sea trade, colonization, and major land–based empires in Asia impacted long– distance trade and shaped economic conditions in North America and China. Between 1450 and 1900 CE , British dominance resulted in global trade empires and a shift towards ocean–based trade in North America and China. During this time, the British adopted a new economic policy known as mercantilism which held that a country's power depended mainly on its wealth. The desire for new sources of wealth inspired British exploration of the East. Having established North America as their colony, the British traveled East. In 1793, the British sought to trade with China which was largely self–sufficient due to mining and manufacturing resources as well as its healthy agricultural economy which started in the 11th century. Around this time, the Chinese dynasty cycle was in decline and its official trade policy reflected isolation. The British imposed economic imperialism and forced China to open to foreign trade and influence. The British East India Company which grew opium in India, a British colony, shipped it to China. While the Chinese developed addictions to the drug, the British economy grew as they shipped fine silk, high quality cotton and exquisite porcelain from China to be sold for a huge profit in North America. Subjected to economic imperialism, China had to sign treaties that favoured the west. • 31. The Importance Of The English Language Did English achieve its world–wide status because of its linguistic features; in other words, because it is more logical, more expressive, simpler or perhaps has a more richer vocabulary than other languages? The answer to this question is no, English did not achieve its world– wide status because of such reasons, it was not the language that was the cause but more the people who spoke it, more accurately, discovered, conquered, traded, influenced and spread out their culture which their mother tongue belonged to. This culture and society was that of the British Empire. However, one contributing factor to the spread of English that is caused by the language itself, is its ability to inherit words from other languages and cultures, whilst also being able to vary from country to country whilst still maintaining its English title. The British empire's mother tongue is English, with this being the case, wherever the British empire travelled or expanded to, English would follow. A major example of this migration of English away from the British Isles was the colonization of America. Before officially becoming the United States of America, English was the most commonly spoken language, so when the founders understood the importance of language for national Identity, English being the more common of the many languages that were being spoken during the time, was chosen. Prior to 1763, both Spanish and British colonization efforts expanded into various regions of North America. In less than a century, from 1625 to 1700, the movements of peoples and goods from Europe to North America transformed the continent. Native Americans either resisted or accommodated the newcomers depending on the region of the colony. Though the English colonies were by far the most populous, within the English colonies, four distinct regions emerged. While planters or merchants grew in power in each English colony, Spanish colonists, with far fewer colonists, depended more on friendly relations with Native Americans to secure their ... The English had a much larger population in their colonies than the Spanish, in fact, in 1700; there was a total population of 250,000 in the English colonies compared to 4,500 in the Spanish. A larger population in the colonies meant there was more manpower for work and, in addition, a greater wealth development. This led to a greater distinction between the English and the Spanish, which was the mass level by which slaves were used in colonial society. The Spanish too had similar ways of acquiring cheap labor services by establishing the Encomienda system. This system, unlike the English, exploited the Indians for personal profits rather than slaves imported from Africa. As English colonies, particularly in the south, focused on establishing an agrarian society; the Spanish did not focus as much on maintaining an agriculture based society. In marked contrast to England's compact, densely populated settlements on the Atlantic, Spain established far–flung inland networks of fortified trading posts and missions. Unlike the English, they were unable to attract large numbers of colonists, and thus enlisted Native Americans as trading partners and military allies. The year is 1947, and you're so happy that you'll finally be able to move your family to a new state where Muslims are the majority religion. But there is bloodshed and violence, and you're starting to question whether this was all worth it. How did we even get to this point? British colonization of India, which began in 1696 with the Mughal rulers allowing the British East India Company a settlement (Choices), lasted through two and a half centuries until 1947. This colonization was part of a massive wave of imperialism that took place from the 1600s through the 1900s. Frantz Fanon, who witnessed the colonization of Algeria firsthand, wrote a book called Wretched of the Earth about colonialism, claiming that it is a violent act which aims to destroy native cultures and make the natives feel inferior. Because of the severity of colonialism, decolonization must require violence as well. His theories on colonialism were somewhat true for the British colonization of India. Frantz Fanon argues that, between the natives and the colonizing power, "their first confrontation was colored by violence and their cohabitation––continued at the point of the bayonet and under cannon fire" (Fanon); in other words, colonization is, in its nature, a violent event. This was true for the British colonization of India, but the type of violence used in this colonization was not necessarily the conventional definition of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. A White Man 's Burden, And Achebe 's Things Fall Apart In history, colonization was a truly popular tradition practiced by great and powerful empires in order to extract and retrieve all materials necessary to support their homeland. However, in order to achieve such sense of commerce and well–being, those colonists who had the power, had to colonize weaker and far less advanced societies. Great powers such as Britain and France would then travel to these societies and implement their rule in order to gain prosperity. Some, those who benefited from colonization, felt that the practice of colonization was an obligation to better the "uncivilized," societies and help them advance, but the emotional and physical hurt that came from colonizing outweighed the positive aspects. The intention was good, but the manner in which colonization was carried out was poor. This topic is immensely controversial that pieces such as Kipling's poem, "A White Man's Burden," and Achebe's "Things Fall Apart," have been written in order to support or go against colonization. But despite much debate, colonization has been a tradition that has caused those regions being colonized much struggle and negativity. The novel Things Fall Apart, speaks of the life of Umuofia2, a fictional Nigerian village, and its traditions before colonization and then the changes it faces at the initiation of colonization. It is based around the life of a man named Okonkwo before the colonists come and the struggles he faces when they arrive. Just as all other regions, Umuofia ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Economic Factors Of The English Colonization Of North America I believe that we cannot say that only one factor had an impact on English colonization, as both had a fairly significant influence. In retrospect the fact that Economic factors did have a greater impact remains true. Merchants that migrated to North America formed Jamestown as the first settlement and were searching for fortune and a better living then they could have in England. Jamestown was founded under the Virginia Company, these English joint stock companies were appointed for this reason – to produce successful settlements. Another reason contributing to the English colonization of North America were the economic problems and concerns that plagued the English. For this reason they went to the Americas in search of raw materials such as gold and silver. Even people that were not merchants, or wealthy businessmen migrated to Americas solely for the bettering of their and their loved ones lives, by farming or other jobs available at the time. Positive And Negative Effects Of American Imperialism In my point of view, the colonial period shifted the balance previously present throughout the world, in which imperialism had less relevance in everyday lives. Before the colonial period, the natives living in the Americas and the Caribbeans, mainly had internal fighting or conflicts between rival tribes. While in Europe, the most tension occurred between major empires competing for trade, land, recourses, and wealth. However, once the Europeans began colonizing America, both of the worlds collided in a massive fight for sovereignty and wealth. This can be seen in each country's colonization of America. Although the colonial period, portrayed a time in which a variety of people were severely abused and many conflicts were provoked, there were also many positive sides towards the American colonization. This positive side promoted societal growth and increased numerous countries` wealth dramatically. In addition to obtaining expensive goods and recourses, American colonization gave European empires the opportunity to expand their rule across oceans. However, In some situations this reaped negative results, such as the British attempt to excessively control their colonies by unconstitutionally issuing new taxes. One can even go as far to say that American colonization led to the separation of the British empire. Spain and England quickly became the most dominant European presences in the Americas. Citizens of the two countries had very different experiences in the New World. This was partially due to their different interactions with Native Americans, religions and their different motivations for coming to the New World. Although rivals at the time, Spain and England's colonization efforts shared many similarities. Motivation for coming to the New World greatly influenced Spanish and British colonization. The Spanish are said to have had three distinct reasons; God, glory and gold. God meaning the conversion of natives, glory meaning the claiming of new land for the Spanish empire and gold meaning the desire to find gold to bring wealth back to Spain. The British colony of Jamestown shared the desire to find gold. Unlike the Spaniards, the British didn't plan on permanently settling in America. • 49. The Role Of European Colonization In The 17th And 18th... Colonization within the Americas of the 17th and 18th centuries took many different forms. Analysis indicates that the European colonizing powers observed many similar policies, tactics, and motivations in relation to the colonization of American territory. For example, all exploited Africans as slaves, had economic interests, and subjected native peoples to subjugation. Among the colonizing powers the United Provinces of the Netherlands stood apart as being unique in their approach to colonization and the administration of their colonies. The Dutch had little or no interest in acquiring or administering a vast strategic empire to gain superior position in relation to its European neighbors. The primary motivation of the United Provinces was to exploit the natural resources and the native peoples for economic gain. This was accomplished by the founding of small trading depots at American harbors in which were built port facilities. • 51. Compare And Contrast French Colonization And Spanish... As a small island country with a strong sense of superiority to natives, Britain focused more on establishing permanent settlements for its booming population rather than religious conversion of natives or diplomacy in its colonization of the New World. This bled into the American ideals of western expansion and disregard for those who stand in their way. British colonies began with less interest in natives altogether than their European rivals. The British preferred to focus on their own settlements and goals without regard for the natives that had lived on their land before them. There was a centralized focus on establishing a permanent settlement; therefore, the British, like the Dutch, did not attempt to convert many natives to Christianity as it was a lesser concern. From the very start of Spanish and French colonization, one could see that religious conversion is a pressing goal for both empires, beginning with Columbus's initial assessment of the natives' ability to be converted to Christianity. Columbus wrote, "...in order that they may conceive affection, and furthermore be made Christian; for they are inclined to the love and service of their Highnesses..." (Columbus 6). He emphasizes that they are easily convertible and that they already hold affection for the Spanish. This is similar to the French colonization method in theory but not in practice. • 55. A Summary Of The European Colonization In the year following Christopher Columbus's "discovery" of America, European powers began to turn their attention to the prospect of colonizing the newly discovered land. With the discovered land seemingly expanding with each new exploration, the possibilities for expansion both territorially and religiously were extremely appealing to these countries and in time they made their way across the sea and established their colonies each with their own style or rule which revealed its efficiency in time (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 19). The European move to colonize began with a major world trading force, the Chinese, stepping out of the way. With their initial motivation being a demonstration of power, their large ships and sailing experience gave them every opportunity to take the lead. However without a real desire to expand and colonize they stepped aside (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 15). Portugal and Spain became the next major players in the game of colonization. Portugal being the farthest country on the Iberian Peninsula needed a way to be included in the trade with Asia, prompting them to create bigger and faster boats to take them down the African coast (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 15). Their creation of new technologies and colonization of the Africa paved the way for them to establish trade routes with the new world (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 17). • 59. African Slavery And The New World 's Demographic Profile Definition Colonialism is the establishment, exploitation, maintenance, acquisition, and expansion of colony in one territory by a political power from another territory. It is a set of unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous population. Colonization is the act of setting up a colony away from one 's place of origin. Colonists settled British North America for different reasons. Some came for profits; others came for religious freedom. For those colonies established for profit, the British Crown granted charters to venturing proprietors or joint–stock companies. Yet, whatever the reason for coming, whatever the type of colony, when English settlers arrived they encountered native populations and Spanish and French settlements. Significantly, African slavery altered the New World 's demographic profile in the early 1600s. Interacting cultures within distinct geographic settings and economic circumstances resulted in unique histories for early colonies such as Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth and South Carolina. South Carolina, for instance, capitalized on low country rice cultivation through the labor of enslaved Africans. Further, South Carolina withstood threats from the Spanish in St. Augustine and from warring natives such as the Weston, Yamasee, and Cherokee. • 61. Economic Causes Of British Settlement In North America Essay Although England's religious turmoil played a role in the development of British settlements, England's economic problems fueled much of the settling of British North America. England's economic situation caused many settlers to come for economic success rather than religious freedoms. Colonists fled to Massachusetts Bay not only to escape religious persecution but also economic decline. Settlers sent by the Virginia Company were attracted by the promises and opportunities to live a better life. Economics soon became the underlying reason for colonization in North America. Economic concerns of England caused the colonization of British North America. From 1550 to 1600, England's population rose from 3 million to 4 million. Due to the high population, landlords began enclosing croplands, causing many small farmers to become landless. The approaches of their respective governments caused vast differences in the economies of the British and Spanish colonies. The idea of colonization in America dates back to the Founding Fathers and their own struggle with slavery and racial inequality in a country only in its infancy and founded on equality. Institutionalized in 1816, the American Colonization Society (ACS) sought to drive consenting freed blacks to West Africa to establish what is now modern–day Liberia. Founded in 1822, Liberia served as the prime example upon which later colonization attempts would be modeled. The United States were more economically successful, more politically successful, and had more international power than the once–prosperous and divided colonization of Latin America. European colonization did not stop at the Americas. In the eyes of many, the Europeans were very greedy and that greed and competition between the European countries eventually led to the efforts to colonize Africa starting in 1870. For a thirty–year period following 1870, Africa faced European imperialist aggression, diplomatic pressures, military invasions, and eventual conquest and colonization. Although the British crown did sponsor the voyage of John Cabot, who founded the fisheries around Newfoundland, royal interest waned when mineral resources were not found. In the crown's absence, private merchant based companies moved in to fund colonization efforts. Unlike the Spanish, English colonizers were granted funds to settle in North America. Instead of revenue from America returning to the state, it went to the investors and stockholders of the private companies. While the Virginia Company sponsored the voyage of Captain Christopher Newport in return for the revenue that would be created from the new colony of Jamestown, charters were granted to those fleeing religious persecution as well. • 73. Causes Of The Age Of Exploration Spain and Britain were two of the most prominent European nations involved in the colonization of the Americas. Both countries, like other European countries, were driven to settle the newfound landmass by a combination of related motives. However, situations in each country also influenced the specific path that the nation took to precedence in the Americas. The means by which governments, explorers, and citizens attained what they needed for themselves or their country also differed throughout Europe. Spain and Britain were motivated by similar mercantilist ideas, but after analysis of these motives, differences in the involvement of religion and riches are evident. As aforementioned, both nations, at a basic level, were propelled by related ambitions. Among these akin ideas were "god, glory, and gold", a term used to describe the main causes of the Age of Exploration. These nations endured some resistance somehow from the local natives of Ghana. In 1807, the tribal kingdom of Asante, hoping to expand its rule from the interior part of Ghana, invaded the coastal parts of Ghana (Richards, 2005). The British and the Dutch needed to consent to them, or else their exchange would tumble incredibly; in this way, in 1817, following several more years of strikes by the Asante warriors, The British and the Dutch governments came to terms with the Asantes (Richards, 2005). The British and the Dutch people signed a friendship treaty that gave the Asante peoples substantial amounts of land on the coastal areas of Gold Coast (Richards, 2005). Later in 1874, after the Asante had lost their last trading ports in the Elmina fortress, the Asante were back again battling The British. Be that as it may, it did not end so well. So, The British mobilized other African auxiliaries and assumed control over Kumasi and finally burnt, the Asante capital (Soyinka, 2008). Colonists also forced the slaves to become Christians even though that did not change their status. They threatened their liberty. African Slaves were treated with racism. Another of the groups that suffered the colonization era were the Indians. "The settlers arrived on the East Coast of North America." (Learning English, 2012.)
