15. BACKGROUND OF
THE LITERARY PIECE
This literary piece is one of the
collections of Largely Middle Eastern
and Indian Stories of The Thousand
and One Nights, also called The
Arabian Nights with uncertain date and
authorship. The Lady and Her Five
Suitors is one of the stories narrated by
a woman, Shahrazad; each evening she
tells an entertaining story to the King,
leaving it incomplete and promising to
finish it the following night. The king
so eager to hear the end, that he puts
off her execution from day to day and
finally abandons his cruel plan.

17. SUMMARY
When her husband is away, the wife of a traveler falls in love with another
man. This man is imprisoned one day as a result of a quarrel he had. The
woman dressed up in the most beautiful clothes and went to the state's most
powerful people to ask for their assistance.
The Kazi, Wali, Wazir, and King agreed to her because they wanted the lady
and hoped to have their way with her. The lady then went to a carpenter and
asked him to build her a cabinet with lockable doors.

18. The lady then went home to
prepare four gowns for her visitors.
She also made food and drinks to
keep them occupied. Kazi is the
first to arrive. When Wali arrived,
she asked him to write a letter that
would liberate her brother from the
chaos he had created. The Wazir
and the King were also imprisoned
inside the cabinet.

19. The carpenter and the lady were arguing about the size of
the last compartment. The lady presented the letter written
by Wali to the treasurer, and her brother was released from
jail. The lady and her lover fled the city, while the five
suitors were imprisoned in a cabinet in the lady's home.

20. After urinating and complaining
to on another, the five recognized
each other. When the neighbors
heard their voices inside the
cabinet, they assumed it was a
genie and decided to burn. the
cabinet. Then they were let go,
revealing them all in the gowns
the woman had given them.

21. Conflict, Tone and POV
Conflict
The story is driven by a Man vs. Man conflict, as
characters engage in a battle of wits and deception.
Tone
The tone is cunning and designed to outwit, creating a
narrative filled with intrigue and amusement.
POV
Told from a Third Person POV.

22. Issues, Symbolism, and Messages
Issues Trickery, Infidelity, Morally Corrupt
Symbolism • Garments, Foods, and kissing the
ground represent customs and
practices.
• Genie and Qur'an symbolize
Islamic beliefs and protection.
Messages • A man can do anything for love, even
sacrificing themselves just to save the man or
their loved ones.
• A man who is not ignorant knows how to
defend herself himself against injustices and
any deceptive pursuit.
• A man who loves someone will not do
something that could break their heart.

23. Theme: Triumph Over Deception
The overarching theme of the story is encapsulated
in the phrase, "A man who is not ignorant leads to
ingenious triumph over deceptive pursuits." This
theme highlights the power of knowledge and
cunning as tools to navigate and overcome the
challenges of deceit.

24. Analysis
It was clear from the story The Lady and Her Five
Suitors that the main character, the traveler's wife,
was quite smart. She devised a highly cunning
scheme to entice the four most powerful individuals
in their community as well as the unsuspecting
carpenter. This scene is also clearly shown in real
life, as people will go to great lengths to be with
those they love.

25. Analysis
The scenario in the novel where the wife betrays her
husband is also really realistic, especially for
married couples where one partner is frequently
gone, especially for business-related reasons.
Because women typically seek certainty and stability
from a guy, and this is largely why so many long
distance relationships have failed, the woman in the
narrative eloped with her lover after letting him out
of jail.

26. Analysis
On the other hand, the physical attractiveness of a
woman generally attracts males quickly. It was
illustrated in the scenario from the story where
powerful men were easily seduced by the merchant's
wife without realizing that her beauty was merely
intended to lure them in. The narrative shows us that
being duped by a woman's attractiveness has
happened in the past and continues to do so today. In
a society dominated mostly by male chauvinism, it is
pervasive.
