11. North Korean Invasion Counterattack
June-Sept 1950 Sept-Oct. 1950
12. September 1950 – North Korea almost
conquers the entire peninsula
Sept. to Oct. 1950 – General MacArthur’s
miracle counter attack reverses the situation
and South Korea takes over most of the
peninsula
13. MacArthur then moves to take over North
Korea and unite Korea under democracy
China steps in and stops the takeover and
pushes the U.S./Korean troops back again
past the 38th parallel
By March 1951- back to 38th parallel
15. MacArthur wanted to attack China
He advocated using atomic bombs and using
the help of Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist
troops
Truman said it was the “wrong war, wrong
place, wrong time, wrong enemy..”
16. April 11th, 1951 – MacArthur relieved of
command byTruman for trying to go over his
head and continue war
17. Soviets initiate cease-fire on June 23rd, 1951
1953 – Armistice signed agreeing on ceasefire
line and exchange of prisoners
