 1945 – Soviets get North of 38th parallel,
industrial
 1945 – Americans get South of 38th parallel,
agricultural
 Republic of Korea

 Capital- Seoul
 Democratic
 Democratic People’s
Republic of Korea
 North
 Capital – Pyongyang
 Communist
 1949 – Both U.S. and Soviets had withdrawn
and both sides claimed the entire peninsula
 North Korea attacks June 25th , 1950
 Truman orders naval and air support
 U.N. Security Council calls on member
nations to help South Korea (Soviet Union
was not there to veto the vote because they
were boycotting the non-recognition of
China) (Wow… can your brain handle fusing
all this awesome history????YES!!!)
 16 nations – 520,000 troops, 90% U.S.
 North Korean Invasion  Counterattack
June-Sept 1950 Sept-Oct. 1950
 September 1950 – North Korea almost
conquers the entire peninsula
 Sept. to Oct. 1950 – General MacArthur’s
miracle counter attack reverses the situation
and South Korea takes over most of the
peninsula
 MacArthur then moves to take over North
Korea and unite Korea under democracy
 China steps in and stops the takeover and
pushes the U.S./Korean troops back again
past the 38th parallel
 By March 1951- back to 38th parallel
Chinese Advance Armistice
Oct. 1950-Jan. 1951 Jan. 1951-July 1953
 MacArthur wanted to attack China
 He advocated using atomic bombs and using
the help of Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist
troops
 Truman said it was the “wrong war, wrong
place, wrong time, wrong enemy..”
 April 11th, 1951 – MacArthur relieved of
command byTruman for trying to go over his
head and continue war
 Soviets initiate cease-fire on June 23rd, 1951
 1953 – Armistice signed agreeing on ceasefire
line and exchange of prisoners
 U.S. damage – 38,000, 20-22 billion dollars
 Viewed as a failure- “The ForgottenWar”,
one of the main reasons Democrats (Truman)
lose the 1952 election to Republicans
(Eisenhower)
 “Down, up, China and back!”
