The island of Hawaii is composed of several active volcanoes (Fig 1a). Kilauea Volcano has been most active in the last several decades. The Kilauea Caldera (large crater) is seen below, with its lava-covered floor and the deep Halema'uma'u Crater (Fig 1b-c) within Kilauea itself. This lab involves interpretation of data related to two recent eruptions of Kilauea that involve two rift systems. The 1971 eruption occurred along the southwest rift zone, and the 1983 to present eruption (Fig 1d) was from the east rift zone.
