MISSION
3. HISTORY
▸ The Museum’s beginnings were very humble. In the 1800’s a group of
twenty six young men would meet at a two room wooden building that
was filled with various mounted birds and mammals comically referred to
as the “Ark.” It officially became known as the Museum of Natural History
in 1920 on December 13. Through the years the museum has sponsored
countless exhibitions, including a trip to Ethiopia in 1974 which aided in
the discovery of the now famous 3 million year old hominid ancestor, Lucy.
The museum has been a key player in the preservation of thousands of
natural habitats, provided hours of education to children and adults, and
acquired tons of precious cultural materials. Today, the museum attracts
world renowned scientists for research and, “Is considered one of the
finest institutions of its kind in North America.” (cmnh.org)

8. LEADERSHIP
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
▸ The value the Museum puts on their Board members and the
sense of fulfillment the board members must feel is evident by
the large number of Honorary and Life Trustees which number 15

19. MAKING A DIFFERENCETHE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY PROVIDES SO MUCH FOR THE CITY OF CLEVELAND,
SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, AND THE SCIENTIFIC WORLD. WITHOUT THE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF LAND WOULD HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED TO ACCOMMODATE URBAN SPRAWL AND
NUMEROUS STUDENTS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PROVIDED WITH QUALITY TEACHING IN A VARIETY OF
SCIENTIFIC FIELDS. THE MUSEUM PROVIDES SCIENTIST FUNDING AND LABS TO PERFORM THEIR
RESEARCH NOT TO MENTION PROVIDING THE WORLD WITH SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE.
