The Influence Of The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes are surrounded by the northern United states, and southern Canada. Both countries
own the Great Lakes except for Michigan which is only owned by United States. The Great Lakes
include Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario. The Great Lakes are connected together by rivers.
The Great Lakes are also connected to the Atlantic Ocean with the St. Lawrence River.
During the 1970s the Great Lakes were polluted by many things. For example, oils, factory's waste,

The Influence Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald the great Gatsby has been one of the greatest literary works of modernism. The
tone of this movement was he American literature in the old days and the present days. F. Scott
Fitzgerald sets the great Gatsby in the jazz age to show the decline in the 1920s, about how wealth
does not bring happiness and those with unrealistic dreams are unsuccessful and dishonestly can
ruin relationships.
Through reading the book, it shows how the experience of selfness and World War 1 made the high
social hopeful over their lives. It showed how they wanted to forget the past and build themselves
back into their social class. Also by the experience of Daisy and Jordan treatment from the men in
the stories allows the reader to see how time still hasn't changed how relationships work with men.
This novel is a great novel to give an example on how reality is to people even the high class.
Through the discussion of the passage will show how the path towards the American Dream can
turn into a negative or positive outcome in a person's life
The characters in the great Gatsby all share similar dreams as most of those dreams does not always
come true. Gatsby is a mysterious wealthy young man. Every Saturday his mansion in West Egg
throughs parties. His real name is jay Gatsby. He was born in North Dakota to a wealthy farming
family. While serving in the Army in World War I, Gatsby met Daisy who he fell in deep love with
her. He worked temporarily for a millionaire who then became

Alexander The Great Influence
Alexander the Great was born to parents King Philip II and Queen Olympia in 356 BCE; he came
from the frontier state of Macedonia to the North of Greece. Alexander took charge of the
Companion Cavalry when he was only 18 years old and assisted his father in defeating the Athenian
and Theban armies and Chaeronea. His father had helped him turn Macedonia into a large ethnic
and territorial state. Macedonia held gold mines that were very helpful for Philip II by financing his
new military technology and disciplining full time armies. "After Philips assassination, his son
Alexander used this new military machine in a series of daring attacks on the apparently invincible
power of the Persian Empire and its king, Darius III." (Worlds Together ... Show more content on

The Great Gatsby Cultural Influences
Throughout the past, writing has left an influential mark on literature and culture due to widespread
change happening in America during those times. The early twentieth century serves as an excellent
illustration of the theory that writers reflect the major cultural influences of their time (Cultural
Influences on American Literature in the Late Nineteenth Century). F. Scott Fitzgerald was an
outstanding author who greatly influenced Americans of his time through his phenomenal works of
literature. One of his most influential novels, The Great Gatsby, defines this modernistic lifestyle of
this era through his reflection of the thriving middle and upper classes. This movement focused on
the culture of this era, known as the "Roaring Twenties", ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, strongly reflected the attitudes of people during the
twentieth century by their disillusioned idea of the American Dream. In this novel, Fitzgerald
creates situations and characteristics similar to his life while presenting the skewed moralities of
society in the twentieth century. For example, Fitzgerald displays the desire for money during this
era through the character Jay Gatsby who throughout the novel obtains money through dishonesty of
his occupation. This change in America was the turning point for how the would continue to be
influenced by the desire for wealth and materialism. F. Scott Fitzgerald reflects this idea of the
modernistic lifestyle and has educated society on his view of this change of morals in the twentieth

Influences In The Great Gatsby
"Great Gatsby" has become famous nowadays, thanks to Leonardo di Caprio. Why is that
important? Because Scott Fitzgerald's book was actually all about the Jazz, literally naming the
period of time between the end of the World War I and the Great Depression – the Jazz age. People
owe so much to this period, which gave people enough space to express themselves. A wise man
once said: "Jazz is an open minded music designed for open minds". The magic started around 1895
in New Orleans, and even though people think of jazz as the music for the elite, it was actually born
in oppressed Black community in America. Growing up, Jazz started to take on many different
influences, becoming the most hybrid form of music ever. When it comes to definition

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald
The way a person writes can be influenced by several factors. In The Great Gatsby written by
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, this novel is loosely based on Fitzgerald's own life. The Great Gatsby
is not only based on Fitzgerald's life, but it was also influenced by his long–time love affair with
Zelda Fitzgerald and his long time addiction to alcohol. The time period in which this novel was
written was influenced heavily by the end of the War, this time period was also known as The
Roaring Twenties. The novel The Great Gatsby, was influenced by the time period, it was written in,
it was also based on the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald, himself.

However, this play was a failure. It was at this time his drinking addiction increased. His drinking
gave him the illusion that he was an irresponsible writer, this was far from the truth. Through the
trials and tribulations, he endured as an upcoming writer; he became fixated with the Jazz Age, "It
was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire," He
wrote in "Echoes of the Jazz Age." Seeking tranquility for his work, the Fitzgeralds went to France;
in the spring of 1924. He wrote The Great Gatsby during the summer and fall in Valescure near St.
Raphael. The Fitzgeralds spent the winter of 1924–1925 in Rome, where he revised The Great
Gatsby; they were en route to Paris when the novel was published in April. The Great Gatsby
marked a striking advance in Fitzgerald's technique, utilizing a complex structure and a controlled
narrative point of view. Fitzgerald's achievement received critical praise, but sales of Gatsby were
disappointing(A Brief Life). During this time, Zelda took refuge in sanatoriums, and Scottie went to

Females Influences on Pip in Great Expectations Essay
Females Influences on Pip in Great Expectations
By Charles Dickens
There are many influences on Pip's life regarding his thoughts on women. This would therefore
mean that Pip would take his views on women from those that were a played a major role in his life,
for example:
* Mrs Joe Gargery is Pip's sister and has raised Pip because their parents have died. Mrs Joe
Gargery has raised both Joe Gargery and Pip by hand as she is not happy with the way her life has
turned out.
* Ms Havisham is an old, frail woman who has been devastated by her fiancé who 'stood her up' at
the reception of their wedding. She has now dedicated her life to destroy the love lives of ... Show

Another feature in Mrs Joe Gargery's character that may have affected Pip is Mrs Joe's snobbish
behaviour. She showed this behaviour when her uncle was to visit especially when her uncle, who
has had a 'successful' life.
She plays a great part in the rearing of Pip as she was a very close relation of Pip although she
raised him by 'hand'. Unlike all the other female characters of 'Great Expectations', Mrs Gargery is
the first female Pip grows up with and therefore Pip will take all he's perceptions of all the female
characters he meets from the characteristics of his sister.
She influences Pip to see women as very violent people, but at the same time may influence Pip to
become a stronger person as these situations could return during life. 'To attack or to be attacked?'
may have been the major question on the mind of Mrs Joe. But is it not better to be in control than
to be controlled?
How does Ms Havisham influence |Pip?
Ms Havisham, like Mrs Joe Gargery, is a snob and shows this by the way she refers to the characters
in the play such as Pip. for instance, she refers to Pip as "Boy" instead of Pip. By this we can see
that Ms Havisham sees herself as a 'higher individual' in class than Pip (which she is) and has no
respect for those in a 'lower class' than her.
Ms Havisham is a woman who lives with hatred (of men) in her life

Influence Of Money In The Great Gatsby
There are a lot of people in the world who let money rule and change them. The movie "The Great
Gatsby" is a prime example of how money effect people lives. Money plays a part in each of their
lives. It may cause people to want what the next person got, be selfish, and be reckless, so it is
known for the root of all evil. In "The Great Gatsby" movie, Jey Gatsby was the man who worked to
get to where he was in life. Then you have Mr. and Mrs. Myrtle who were not rich at all. Tom
Buchanon on the other hand, was born with a silver spoon. People like Tom looked down on people
like Gatsby , and Mr. and Mrs. Myrtle because the riches felt like if you were not born rich, then you
are considered poor. So it brings a lot of altercations to the table. Rich people feel like they have
their whole life to do whatever and whenever, while "poor" people have to think about their next
move. Tom is rich from old money, so he does what he wants, but Gatsby is rich by new money but
he is also able to do what he wants.Gatsby was able to throw parties just like any other rich person,
but then you have the Myrtle family who is not really able to do much at all. That just goes to show
how people are categorized by their background instead of what they really have. For instance, in
Beverly Hills, that is where rich people stay, so if someone wants to visit the neighborhood but does
not stay there, then they cannot enter the area because that area is only for the rich people that stay
there. It was

American Influence On The Great Gatsby
When you think of the roaring 1920's, you picture music, dance, life. The art from this time also
evolved into something brighter and more imaginative. "The Harlem Renaissance had played an
enormous role in creating this sense of a distinct American identity. Its music, especially, was
widely understood as one of the first truly "authentic" expressions of American experience,
unfettered by European influence or tradition" (The Humanities 109). It was time where people
could finally act like themselves and do whatever they want without getting criticized. Women were
starting to show some skin with less clothing, Jazz became a popular genre of music that people
could not get enough of, and poetry and paintings gave a whole new meaning to art. ... Show more

How Did Alexander The Great Influence Hellenism
Hello, my name is Kavauri Mckinnon. Today i will be writing a report on Alexander the Great.
More specifically, his influence on Hellenism. To give a brief insight on what Hellenism is, it is the
culture of ancient Greece. This term can be traced back to the Hellenistic period. The Hellenistic
period is a the time between the death of Alexander the Great and the annexation of the classical
Greek heartlands by Rome. Speaking of Alexander the Great, I believe I should start this off by
describing exactly who he was. Alexander the Great was born on July 20, 356 B.C., in Pella, in the
Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. During his reign as king, from 336 to 323 B.C., he united
the Greek city–states and led the Corinthian League. He also became ... Show more content on

Lysimachus had the areas of Thrace and much of Asia Minor, Cassander received Macedonia and
Greece, Ptolemy seized Egypt, Palestine, Cilicia, Petra, and Cyprus, and Seleucus took control of
the rest of Asia. Hellenic influence continued to spread throughout the lands ruled by the generals
and Greek dedications, statues, architecture and inscriptions have been found in abundance in every
locale. Greek language introduced Greek literature into the former Persian Empire, thereby
influencing the philosophical thought and writing of the region. The Great Library at Alexandria,
Egypt, which is said to have been started by Ptolemy I, became the most important center for
learning in the ancient world. Greek theater flourished throughout the lands conquered by Alexander
and the amphitheaters built during the Hellenistic Period show markedly Greek features no matter
the nationality of the architect nor the country of construction. The spread of Greek influence and
language is also shown through coinage. Portraits became more realistic, and the obverse of the coin

Dystopian Influence On The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of my favorite books I read in school. I loved the
way he portrayed the American dream throughout the book. Gatsby changed his entire lifestyle in
order to impress his long time love interest, Daisy. In the end, he realized that all of the material
things did not matter and his American dream was tied to his love for her. The Hunger Games by
Suzanne Collins was the first dystopian book series I read. I loved it and it sparked my love for
mystery novels. Collins allowed me to feel everything with Katniss and the other characters. The
idea of turning children against each other for the public's entertainment still leaves me speechless.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan was my go to series throughout middle school. I
always had one of these books in my hand. I loved the idea of half bloods walking around amongst
everyday people and having this secret life. I loved reading about the character's lives and seeing
them become adults. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

love with the characters and was constantly putting myself in their shoes. I always wondered if I
would have been able to do the things Tris did while she was a part of dauntless, and I thought

The Influence Of The Great Pyramids Of Giza
The most famous Egyptian pyramids to be built are the Great Pyramids of Giza, located in the
outskirts of present–day Cairo. There are over 100 Egyptian pyramids of various sizes, and over 50
more in neighboring Sudan. However, the three Great Pyramids of Giza earn their fame by being the
largest of these.
In the most popular pictures of the Pyramids of Giza, like the one shown below, the middle pyramid,
that of Khafre (Chephren), appears larger due to the angle and because it was built on higher
ground. The largest pyramid is actually the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), the one on the left.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu
Contrary to popular belief, not all the Great Pyramids of Giza are considered part of the Seven
Wonders of the World. Only the largest, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, is a member, and is the only
one of the Seven Wonders that still stands. Egypt was also home to another of the Seven Wonders of
the World, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was destroyed long ago. ... Show more content on

What makes the pyramid an architectural triumph and one of the Seven Wonders of the World is the
fact that the rocks used in its construction each way more than 2 tons. And there are more than 2
million of those rocks.
Greek travelers to ancient Giza wrote that it took a hundred thousand slaves 20 years to construct
the pyramid. However, since they visited Egypt more than 2 thousand years after the Egyptian
pyramids were built, the truth of their accounts are suspect. Modern engineers estimate that it would
likely take less people and less time to build the pyramid using technology that was available at that

Cyrus the Great like any other king; was a formidable warrior during his reign. Unlike any other
kings before him, Cyrus's Empire left behind a legacy unlike any other. The clever but obvious

widely recognized from for their effective system of government, tolerance, collaboration among
many cultures and beliefs (Judge, Langdon 120). Even after his reign and Cyrus's ruling left an

Cyrus's command he committed suicide. However each theory on whether on not Cyrus won has the

Alexander Plutarch's Influence On Alexander The Great
Best known for his writings of leading figures in antiquity and his essays on ethics and virtue,
Plutarch's biography on Alexander the Great and his vision would influence tremendously upon
future western writers in regard to the interpretation of Alexander the Great. Plutarch's Alexander's
fortune and virtue claimed that Alexander's aim for his empire was "homonoia," the unity of
mankind and "fusion" between civilizations. According to Plutarch, Alexander rejected the
traditional "Greek" view that Persian were "barbarians," and instead proclaimed that Alexander was

Alexander The Great Greek Influence
During his campaigns, Alexander the Great founded many cities in which he settled the soldiers who
were wounded or too old to continue with him in his conquest. Following his death, Alexander's
empire was broken up between his successors, the Diadochi. Ultimately, after decades of conflict
between the successors, Alexander's territory was split into three kingdoms: Greece and Macedonia
under the Antigonids; Egypt under the Ptolemies; and Asia Minor under the Seleucids. Along with
the cities founded by Alexander, the establishment of the Greek kingdoms began the mass

The Influence Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby
The author of The Light in the Heart, Roy T. Bennett, once said, "Dreams don't work unless you
take action. The surest way to make your dreams come true is to live them." Bennett believes in
sharing his personal feelings about how to live a fulfilling life. He writes in the hopes that his
writings will guide a person in the right direction to succeed past new limits. Just like Bennett, we
all believe that hard work is the key to success. The Great Gatsby explores the American Dream and
how hard work can affect someone's life drastically. Some people view Gatsby as a successful man
who was able to achieve the American Dream. A character in the novel named Nick Carraway
compares Gatsby to Jesus, "He was a son of God...So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a
seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end"
(Fitzgerald 105). Gatsby saw himself in a particular way and was determined to transform himself

Influence Of Wealth In The Great Gatsby
Money is the ultimate driving force. It controls people and holds the focus of many individuals
worldwide, as well as both endangering the beholder and acting as a thick, green safety blanket.
Simply put, every aspect of life involves money which leads to a great disparity between those who
are wealthy and those who are not. This influence of wealth features prominently in F. Scott
Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. A majority of the characters within this novel possess great amounts
of wealth, as represented in their belongings and their attitudes. In The Great Gatsby, this theme of
extreme wealth and its effect on life plays an overwhelmingly significant role in explaining various
details from the book, including the character's belongings, attitudes, actions, and even the setting.
The earliest and most obvious example of the influence of wealth in this novel involves the
characters' belongings. The novel reveals Gatsby's obscene displays of wealth when painting an
awesome image of Gatsby's parties: "On week–ends his Rolls–Royce became an omnibus, bearing
parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station
wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains" (39). Fitzgerald used this passage and

captures the whole essence of this novel by choosing the 1920s as the novel's setting. This

Alexander The Great Influence
Alexander the Great was a king of Ancient Greece from 336 to 323 BC. His parents were Philip the

through to the Asian society. Alexander expanded his land through the mountainous regions of
Afghanistan to Tibet which opened up Greek languages and trading throughout the south west
region of China. Once the empire had expanded people could understand each other clearly, but this
also caused a number of battles to start. Three significant battles took place between Alexander the
Great and the Persian Empire. The first major battle was in May 334 BC in the Granicus River
between Alexander The Great and the Persian Empire which was ruled by Darius the III. The second

Historical Influences Of The Great Gatsby
The Historical Influences of "The Great Gatsby" We look back in history in order to learn from our
mistakes and to help society progress in the present and in the future. "The Great Gatsby" was
written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. Fitzgerald wrote this piece during the 1920s after WWI and it
perfectly replicates the time period. The narrative captures the essence of the Jazz Age by depicting
characters, showing power struggles and by defining the societal conflicts of the time. The novel
tells us about different influences on the 20's such as the Prohibition Act, the success of Wall Street,
and aspects of the American Dream. "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald possesses the social
constructs and ideas of the Roaring Twenties. The author, F. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September
24, 1896, Saint Paul, MN to an upperclass family and was given a suitable education in his youth. In
the novel we learn of Gatsby's poverty–stricken childhood and how he managed to obtained his
fortune. The following quote describes Gatsby's childhood and his parents, "His parents were
shiftless and unsuccessful farm people–his imagination had never really accepted them as his
parents at all ... His father's business, the service of the vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty."
(Fitzgerald 98). Gatsby is characterized as having an impoverished childhood as opposed to
Fitzgerald's youth. However eventually both Gatsby and Fitzgerald participated in the lavish parties
that were reminiscent of

Charlemagne The Great Influence
Every culture in history has had leaders that are remembered as larger–than–life, Moses, Attila the
Hun, Henry VIII, and George Washington, just to name a few. All of these great leaders were
famous in their own time, or perhaps infamous, and modern historians wade through countless
documents and stories to piece together the facts from the legends. Few of those memorable figures
have actually retained the moniker "the great" through the ages, yet the Frankish king Charles
remains "Charlemagne the Great" (Guizot, n.d.). Ruler of a vast empire, Charlemagne maintained
rigid control of his Frankish empire for over 40 years using his boundless energy, spiritual fervor,

exactly whom they served. He also saw great value in building up the infrastructure of his larger
cities and poured money into constructing bridges, palaces and restoring places of worship. A
brilliant tactician, through marriages, treaties, and wars, he managed to create and maintain alliances
with bordering nations that allowed him to expand the empire, while also protecting it(Guizot, n.d.).
Fearless and ruthless, Charlemagne united much of the European continent under one rule and

Herod The Great Influence
Herod the Great was the consummate politician. He obtained his power to rule from Rome through
political alliances, friendships and marriage. He was the son of Antipater, an Arab who converted to
and practiced Judaism. Herod married Mariamne, a princess of the Hasmonean dynasty, in part to
bring about a cessation of hostilities between himself and the Hasmoneans. The Hasmoneans
formed the Hasmonean Dynasty and were known as a group of priestly Jewish leaders. Herod's
Temple was another political move, an effort to further ingratiate himself the Jewish people he
sought to rule through Rome's authority. Herod hoped his rule would be easier and his reign secured
by keeping order and peace in Palestine and appeasing his subjects was part of his plan. In spite of
his political motives for refurbishing the Temple, Herod did show some measure of good faith
towards the Jews in the construction and administration of the Temple. He ensured the construction

constructed during the Exodus period under the leadership of Moses. It was there that the Glory of
the LORD resided signifying the special relationship between the one true God and Israel, His

Solomon. Herod sought to make his temple grander than the one constructed under the rule of
Solomon. He started by constructing walls around the peak of the temple mount and backfilling
these walls to create a large plateau or platform on which to build the temple. Part of this wall exists

Alexander The Great Influence
The celebrated king, Alexander, has been one of the most enduring figures in history; his great skill
as both a leader and a general has made him renown for 2,000 years and others have adapted his
strategies and tactics. In his lifetime Alexander the Great established the greatest empire in the
ancient world, and the interest regarding him has ceased to fade because we are always learning
more about what he did and his personal insight on the world at his time. His achievements

His attackers were Alexander used the method of the phalanx as an advantage in many of the battles
he fought to take control over territory. "The sight of Alexander's phalanx in full battle and also
absolute silence was almost bone chilling". The phalanx was the ancient form for infantry
established by the Greeks where the soldiers were arranged in rows, their arms at the ready, making
a block that could weep though the enemy's displeased ranks. By using the phalanx, Alexander
conquered all of Greece and the Middle East. With the Persians cavalry of 34,000 to Alexander's of
7,000, Alexander had devised a daring and inventive tactic. This one had been copied by generals in
similar circumstances ever since. Alexander planned to give the enemy an idea that his forces were
weaker than they were, and then he would use his left and right phalanx to draw as many of the
Persians as he could onto the sides; when the emney center showed an opening he would drive his
phalanx into it. Overall Darius' power was shattered along with his army and personal prestige. The
persian empire was ready to be entered. Another example is the Sogdian Rock. Oxyartes and his
troops laughed at Alexander when he had asked them to surrender as part of his great conquest, the
fortress was perched halfway up on a rock face and the chieftain said Alexander would need soldiers
who could fly to get him up there. This was the sort of challenge Alexander just could not resist. So,
he called on his troops for mountain climbers to first reach the top, offering $20,000 at the most.
Having promised prizes, he had no trouble finding 300 men who were prepared to risk a secret night
assault on the Sogdian Rock. About 30 fell to their death, but by morning the rest had used their
ropes and iron tent pegs to signal their king from the

The Great Gatsby Influence On Society
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by Frances Scott Fitzgerald in which he portrayed the American
society of the period known as The Jazz Age. The Jazz Age is marked by spontaneous, carefree
behavior of people who placed great emphasis on the materialistic things and hedonistic way of life
due to the end of the Great Depression. The novel evokes the atmosphere and follows the lives of
characters belonging to the upper class. The central character of the novel is Jay Gatsby. Fitzgerald
used features of the romantic and tragic heroes and combined them to form the Gatsby's character.
Gatsby created his own world based on the unrealistic expectations, isolated himself from the
society, and cling onto idealistic ideas. In contrast, it were not his ideas that made him fall; it was
society. Gatsby was marked as the one who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is an idealist who builds his life around one idea: love. His innocent belief in the achievement of
that goal, made him vulnerable, made him easily manipulated, and crashed down by the society.
This is why he is the Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald succeeded in presenting him as a romantic hero with a
tragic ending. Although he earned his money in an immoral way and became one of the members of
the upper class he was "perfectly ready to throw it away – along wit his life – when Daisy destroys
his faith in her as the incarnation of his dream" (Mizener 135). His actions were based on greater
values than those of other characters. His fall happened when Daisy rejected him, but he rose again
when he committed suicide. He stayed true to himself and decided rather to kill himself than to be a
part of this "modern world that has become a moral and spiritual wasteland" (Resneck Parr 60). He
clung on one idea but it is not an idea that killed him; it is society who made him so disgusted by the
world that the death seemed greater than being

Causes And Influences Of The Great Depression
The Great Depression is a period synonymous with excruciating poverty and darkness worldwide. It
can be said that an undeniable impact was felt upon all of the world's nations – although it can also
be said that not all countries were affected negatively. At the time, the majority of the powers of the
world were – for the most part – all very much entwined both politically and economically. Thus,
the research from this point on will cover not only what caused the depression, but how it impacted
each of the major powers of the Asia–Pacific, those being; the United States, China, Japan, and
Russia (the former USSR). An in depth analysis of the Great Depression reveals that the United
States suffered huge losses, while China, Japan, and the Soviet Union were relatively unaffected.
Cause of Great Depression:
Let's begin by exploring the major causes and influences of the great depression. The most common
belief held by many is that the great depression was triggered by the crash of the stock market in
1929, however while human nature requests that things fall into simplistic narrative (Ie. stocks
crash, therefore economy follows suit) there is in reality no simple, concise answer to what caused
the great depression. In the case of the stock market crash, it is simply a case of correlation not
equaling causation. Just because the depression occurred soon after the stock market crash, does not
mean it caused it.
The roaring twenties was a fantastic time full of large scale

Unexpected Influences in Great Expectations
When one thinks of a strong, influential person, they most likely will first think of a world leader or
president. These are examples of influential leaders, but in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, the
most influential characters on Pip are people who would appear to be minor female characters in the
novel. One would assume since the time of Great Expectations was set the first half of the 19th
Century, which was the time of the Victorian Era, that the men of the novel would have a greater
influence on the women of the novel. However, Pip is impacted greatly by women throughout his
life, even more so than men. Pip's greatest female influence in life was Estella, but the purpose of

mercy" (Dickens 94)! Later in the story, Estella and Miss Havisham get into a fight and Estella says
that Miss Havisham had "taught her to be proud and hard" (Dickens 306). If Miss Havisham had not
used Estella to seek revenge, Estella may have truly fallen in love with Pip. Miss Havisham realizes
how badly she had hurt Pip once Estella gets married to Drummle. She "dropped on her knees at my

she got badly hurt in the fire, she had a message written to him and he responded by saying: "Take

Pip's life was Biddy. Biddy was the most kind–hearted woman in the story, but Pip did not
appreciate her as much because she did not have social status and was not wealthy. Pip had a special

Influence of Women in The Great Gatsby Essay
Female Great Gatsby Journal Though the Great Gatsby is a male dominated book, there are a few
women who have great influences. Daisy Buchannan is the main female character, having romantic
relations with both Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. Myrtle Wilson is a woman who is married to a
hardworking man, but she remained unfaithful throughout the length of the novel. Lastly, Jordan
Baker is probably the least mentioned woman but had an equally important role as the others.

Myrtle Wilson is the other partner in Tom Buchannan's affair. She is of a simpler lifestyle living on
the "edge of the wasteland...contiguous to absolutely nothing."(Gatsby 24). Nick describes her "a
thick woman" "in [her] middle thirties" (Gatsby 25), the average woman in that time. Once she and
Tom get off the train, she immediately buys a dog, and then makes a point to buy a rather expensive
dog as well. When she arrives to her sister's house, where a party is taking place, Nick says that she
"changed her costume" (Gatsby 30). Because a costume is also the attire performers wear, Nick is
giving us the impression that all of this is a play, a facade to act wealthy when in fact she is not.
Nick also says "with the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change. The
intense vitality that had been so remarkable in the garage was converted into impressive hauteur"
(Gatsby 30), again another indicator of her "performance" of a wealthy woman. Soon, she and Tom
"discuss in impassioned voices" whether she had any "right to mention Daisy's name" (Gatsby 37).
Tom punches her after this, but still left the party with her. Myrtle is now a woman with no self–
respect, due to her allowing a man, though he may be rich, to physically assault her, instead of
having a man who truly cares for her not being well off. Jordan Baker is not talked about much in
the book until the third chapter. Nick talks about her "incurable dishonesty"

characters were inspired by his life events. Fitzgerald and Gatsby share more than romantics, they
share a conflict that must be resolved in order to earn their date's hand in marriage. Fitzgerald's
character Gatsby leaves Daisy to go to the war. He realizes that because he is not rich and
established he will never be able to marry Daisy. After succeeding in the war, Gatsby's infatuation
with Daisy and his determination to succeed leads him to make millions through high class
organized crime. Gatsby achieves success and live an extravagant lifestyle in an attempt to impress
Daisy and win her back. This romantic idea of becoming successful to be with someone you love

Influence : Alexander The Great
A significant influence on modern society was from a great leader named Alexander of Macedon.
The adroit leader had an impressive undefeated record. Alexander the Great was known as being
one of the most accomplished leaders in Ancient Civilizations. However, who was responsible for
influencing this prominent ancient figure? Some historians say that he was deeply influenced by his
parents. Alexander's mother gave him his thirst for victory and was a major supporter of Alexander's
campaign (http://www.polarimagazine.com/features/historical–influence–alexander–great). His
father, Philip of Macedon was a brilliant tactician taught him how to become a good warrior

historians argue that Aristotle, Alexander the Great's tutor and teacher, was a major influence on
Alexander the Great's success (https://www.livescience.com/39997–alexander–the–great.html).
Aristotle taught Alexander art, strategism, logic, science, nature, and how to handle difficult
political situations. Without this knowledge, Alexander would not have been the greatest conqueror
of Ancient Civilizations. Although Alexander of Macedon had great militaristic skill, nevertheless,
he would not have been the renowned conqueror he was if not for Aristotle and his revolutionary
teachings. Aristotle has been called one of the smartest scientists and philosophers to ever step foot

Music was very popular, but jazz was the most common. New Orleans, Louisiana "is considered the
birthplace of jazz" (Jazz). So in the 1920s, when prohibition had started, speakeasies wanted cheap
entertainment, so African American jazz players were cheap and good at playing. Jazz brought
people together in the nightclubs and other illegal places by making them dance together and have a
fun time. Jazz was also heard in speakeasies where mostly men and flappers would go to have a
smoke, drink, and listen to jazz. Speakeasies were illegal and it gave people a sense of an adrenaline

going to play, "in the clubs and on the radio, the new sounds of jazz became the music of the day"
(Roaring Twenties). As jazz got more popular, and more artists got recognized, it started to grow
towards Chicago. Many artists bloomed in Chicago such as Louis Armstrong, which had started out
in Louisiana, but got more popular in Chicago from recording first records and playing more. After
Chicago, however, New York made an astonishing change for jazz .It was the "unofficial capital of

  • 2. The Influence Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald the great Gatsby has been one of the greatest literary works of modernism. The tone of this movement was he American literature in the old days and the present days. F. Scott Fitzgerald sets the great Gatsby in the jazz age to show the decline in the 1920s, about how wealth does not bring happiness and those with unrealistic dreams are unsuccessful and dishonestly can ruin relationships. Through reading the book, it shows how the experience of selfness and World War 1 made the high social hopeful over their lives. It showed how they wanted to forget the past and build themselves back into their social class. Also by the experience of Daisy and Jordan treatment from the men in the stories allows the reader to see how time still hasn't changed how relationships work with men. This novel is a great novel to give an example on how reality is to people even the high class. Through the discussion of the passage will show how the path towards the American Dream can turn into a negative or positive outcome in a person's life The characters in the great Gatsby all share similar dreams as most of those dreams does not always come true. Macedonia held gold mines that were very helpful for Philip II by financing his new military technology and disciplining full time armies. The early twentieth century serves as an excellent illustration of the theory that writers reflect the major cultural influences of their time (Cultural Influences on American Literature in the Late Nineteenth Century). F. Scott Fitzgerald was an outstanding author who greatly influenced Americans of his time through his phenomenal works of literature. • 5. Influences In The Great Gatsby "Great Gatsby" has become famous nowadays, thanks to Leonardo di Caprio. Why is that important? Because Scott Fitzgerald's book was actually all about the Jazz, literally naming the period of time between the end of the World War I and the Great Depression – the Jazz age. People owe so much to this period, which gave people enough space to express themselves. A wise man once said: "Jazz is an open minded music designed for open minds". The magic started around 1895 in New Orleans, and even though people think of jazz as the music for the elite, it was actually born in oppressed Black community in America. Growing up, Jazz started to take on many different influences, becoming the most hybrid form of music ever. When it comes to definition ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In The Great Gatsby written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, this novel is loosely based on Fitzgerald's own life. The Great Gatsby is not only based on Fitzgerald's life, but it was also influenced by his long–time love affair with Zelda Fitzgerald and his long time addiction to alcohol. The time period in which this novel was written was influenced heavily by the end of the War, this time period was also known as The Roaring Twenties. It was at this time his drinking addiction increased. His drinking gave him the illusion that he was an irresponsible writer, this was far from the truth. Through the trials and tribulations, he endured as an upcoming writer; he became fixated with the Jazz Age, "It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire," He wrote in "Echoes of the Jazz Age." Seeking tranquility for his work, the Fitzgeralds went to France; in the spring of 1924. He wrote The Great Gatsby during the summer and fall in Valescure near St. Raphael. The Fitzgeralds spent the winter of 1924–1925 in Rome, where he revised The Great Gatsby; they were en route to Paris when the novel was published in April. The Great Gatsby marked a striking advance in Fitzgerald's technique, utilizing a complex structure and a controlled narrative point of view. Fitzgerald's achievement received critical praise, but sales of Gatsby were disappointing(A Brief Life). During this time, Zelda took refuge in sanatoriums, and Scottie went to boarding school and lived with a surrogate family. F. Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack on December 21, 1940. • 8. Females Influences on Pip in Great Expectations Essay Females Influences on Pip in Great Expectations By Charles Dickens There are many influences on Pip's life regarding his thoughts on women. This would therefore mean that Pip would take his views on women from those that were a played a major role in his life, for example: * Mrs Joe Gargery is Pip's sister and has raised Pip because their parents have died. Mrs Joe Gargery has raised both Joe Gargery and Pip by hand as she is not happy with the way her life has turned out. * Ms Havisham is an old, frail woman who has been devastated by her fiancé who 'stood her up' at the reception of their wedding. She has now dedicated her life to destroy the love lives of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another feature in Mrs Joe Gargery's character that may have affected Pip is Mrs Joe's snobbish behaviour. She showed this behaviour when her uncle was to visit especially when her uncle, who has had a 'successful' life. She plays a great part in the rearing of Pip as she was a very close relation of Pip although she raised him by 'hand'. Unlike all the other female characters of 'Great Expectations', Mrs Gargery is the first female Pip grows up with and therefore Pip will take all he's perceptions of all the female characters he meets from the characteristics of his sister. She influences Pip to see women as very violent people, but at the same time may influence Pip to become a stronger person as these situations could return during life. 'To attack or to be attacked?' may have been the major question on the mind of Mrs Joe. But is it not better to be in control than to be controlled? How does Ms Havisham influence |Pip? Ms Havisham, like Mrs Joe Gargery, is a snob and shows this by the way she refers to the characters in the play such as Pip. for instance, she refers to Pip as "Boy" instead of Pip. By this we can see that Ms Havisham sees herself as a 'higher individual' in class than Pip (which she is) and has no respect for those in a 'lower class' than her.

  • 10. Influence Of Money In The Great Gatsby There are a lot of people in the world who let money rule and change them. The movie "The Great Gatsby" is a prime example of how money effect people lives. Money plays a part in each of their lives. It may cause people to want what the next person got, be selfish, and be reckless, so it is known for the root of all evil. In "The Great Gatsby" movie, Jey Gatsby was the man who worked to get to where he was in life. Then you have Mr. and Mrs. Myrtle who were not rich at all. Tom Buchanon on the other hand, was born with a silver spoon. People like Tom looked down on people like Gatsby , and Mr. and Mrs. Myrtle because the riches felt like if you were not born rich, then you are considered poor. So it brings a lot of altercations to the table. Rich people feel like they have their whole life to do whatever and whenever, while "poor" people have to think about their next move. Tom is rich from old money, so he does what he wants, but Gatsby is rich by new money but he is also able to do what he wants.Gatsby was able to throw parties just like any other rich person, but then you have the Myrtle family who is not really able to do much at all. That just goes to show how people are categorized by their background instead of what they really have. For instance, in Beverly Hills, that is where rich people stay, so if someone wants to visit the neighborhood but does not stay there, then they cannot enter the area because that area is only for the rich people that stay there. • 11. American Influence On The Great Gatsby When you think of the roaring 1920's, you picture music, dance, life. The art from this time also evolved into something brighter and more imaginative. "The Harlem Renaissance had played an enormous role in creating this sense of a distinct American identity. Its music, especially, was widely understood as one of the first truly "authentic" expressions of American experience, unfettered by European influence or tradition" (The Humanities 109). It was time where people could finally act like themselves and do whatever they want without getting criticized. Women were starting to show some skin with less clothing, Jazz became a popular genre of music that people could not get enough of, and poetry and paintings gave a whole new meaning to art. ... Pound became the face for new American poetry in the 1930's, even influencing some of his friends, William Carlos Williams, E.E. Cummings, and Hart Crane. • 12. How Did Alexander The Great Influence Hellenism Hello, my name is Kavauri Mckinnon. Today i will be writing a report on Alexander the Great. More specifically, his influence on Hellenism. To give a brief insight on what Hellenism is, it is the culture of ancient Greece. This term can be traced back to the Hellenistic period. The Hellenistic period is a the time between the death of Alexander the Great and the annexation of the classical Greek heartlands by Rome. Speaking of Alexander the Great, I believe I should start this off by describing exactly who he was. Alexander the Great was born on July 20, 356 B.C., in Pella, in the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia. During his reign as king, from 336 to 323 B.C., he united the Greek city–states and led the Corinthian League. He also became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lysimachus had the areas of Thrace and much of Asia Minor, Cassander received Macedonia and Greece, Ptolemy seized Egypt, Palestine, Cilicia, Petra, and Cyprus, and Seleucus took control of the rest of Asia. Hellenic influence continued to spread throughout the lands ruled by the generals and Greek dedications, statues, architecture and inscriptions have been found in abundance in every locale. Greek language introduced Greek literature into the former Persian Empire, thereby influencing the philosophical thought and writing of the region. The Great Library at Alexandria, Egypt, which is said to have been started by Ptolemy I, became the most important center for learning in the ancient world. Greek theater flourished throughout the lands conquered by Alexander and the amphitheaters built during the Hellenistic Period show markedly Greek features no matter the nationality of the architect nor the country of construction. The spread of Greek influence and language is also shown through coinage. Portraits became more realistic, and the obverse of the coin was often used to display a propaganda image, commemorating an event or displaying the image of a favored ... • 13. Dystopian Influence On The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of my favorite books I read in school. I loved the way he portrayed the American dream throughout the book. Gatsby changed his entire lifestyle in order to impress his long time love interest, Daisy. In the end, he realized that all of the material things did not matter and his American dream was tied to his love for her. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was the first dystopian book series I read. I loved it and it sparked my love for mystery novels. There are over 100 Egyptian pyramids of various sizes, and over 50 more in neighboring Sudan. However, the three Great Pyramids of Giza earn their fame by being the largest of these. In the most popular pictures of the Pyramids of Giza, like the one shown below, the middle pyramid, that of Khafre (Chephren), appears larger due to the angle and because it was built on higher ground. The largest pyramid is actually the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), the one on the left. Myrtle Wilson is a woman who is married to a hardworking man, but she remained unfaithful throughout the length of the novel. Lastly, Jordan Baker is probably the least mentioned woman but had an equally important role as the others. Fitzgerald used the development of the three women to further the plot and theme of the book and show the treatment and role of women in that society at that time. Daisy Buchannan is introduced in the first chapter at a gathering in her home. Nick describes her as a rich ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Myrtle Wilson is the other partner in Tom Buchannan's affair. She is of a simpler lifestyle living on the "edge of the wasteland...contiguous to absolutely nothing."(Gatsby 24). Nick describes her "a thick woman" "in [her] middle thirties" (Gatsby 25), the average woman in that time. Once she and Tom get off the train, she immediately buys a dog, and then makes a point to buy a rather expensive dog as well. When she arrives to her sister's house, where a party is taking place, Nick says that she "changed her costume" (Gatsby 30). Because a costume is also the attire performers wear, Nick is giving us the impression that all of this is a play, a facade to act wealthy when in fact she is not. Nick also says "with the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change. The intense vitality that had been so remarkable in the garage was converted into impressive hauteur" (Gatsby 30), again another indicator of her "performance" of a wealthy woman. Soon, she and Tom "discuss in impassioned voices" whether she had any "right to mention Daisy's name" (Gatsby 37). Tom punches her after this, but still left the party with her. Myrtle is now a woman with no self– respect, due to her allowing a man, though he may be rich, to physically assault her, instead of having a man who truly cares for her not being well off. Jordan Baker is not talked about much in the book until the third chapter. Nick talks about her "incurable dishonesty" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
