Social media has greatly impacted modern society by enabling greater political organization and activism. It has reduced the gatekeeping of traditional media and given a voice to more people. However, social media also has drawbacks like reducing authentic social connections, enabling cyberbullying, and privacy and data collection concerns. Additionally, social media language and photo sharing behaviors have evolved due to these new platforms. Overall, social media plays a huge role in today's world that can no longer be ignored.

The Empire Strikes Back:
Social Media Uprisings and
the Future of Cyber Activism
by Ramtin Amin
ramtin amin is a Master in Public Policy
student at the John f. Kennedy school of
Government at Harvard University where he
concentrates in international and global
affairs. He has conducted extensive
research at the nexus of technology and
democracy and plans to pursue doctoral
work in this field upon graduating.
Neda Agha-Soltan and a few close friends
headed toward the center of Tehran, Iran,
in June 2009 to join thousands of others
in an anti-government protest following
the disputed presidential election. After
becoming stuck in traffic, Agha-Soltan
and her friends eventually decided to exit
the car to cool off. As she stepped out and
gazed at the crowd, the sound of a
gunshot rang through the air. A single
bullet was fired, and she fell to
the ground.
Bystanders captured her last moments
on a cell phone, and within hours the
grainy, low-resolution footage was
uploaded to the Internet and soon spread
virally across the globe. With links to
the video posted on YouTube, Facebook,
and Twitter, the amateur clip eventually
harnessed the attention of the mainstream
media, grabbing headlines on CNN and
in the New York Times.
Agha-Soltan’s death became a symbol for
the Iranian anti-government movement,
and online social media amplified that
symbol for the rest of the world to see.
TRADITIONAL POWER CIRCUMVENTED
The image of Agha-Soltan’s death was not
one that Iran’s government wanted the
world to see. In a country notorious for
its media censorship, the emergence of
online social networking sites and cell
phone cameras now allows citizens to
bypass state-censored media instantly and
transmit a message or video clip to
countless others at little or no cost. Digital
media has enabled average citizens,
including the two bystanders at the scene
of Agha-Soltan’s death, to provoke
outrage and motivate millions of people
to their feet at the touch of a button. Such
a level of power was previously limited to
just a small number of people within a
governing regime or those leading an
opposition group.
But this phenomenon is not unique
to Iran. Around the world, social
networking sites like YouTube and
Facebook are becoming unlikely leaders
of political power, as citizens circumvent
single political or religious leaders to
become champions of their
own campaigns.
DIGITAL ACTIVISM IN ACTION
Digital activism, also known as cyber
activism or e-activism, describes how
citizens can use digital tools to effect
social and political change. These digital
tools range from mobile phones and
digital cameras to Web 2.0 social
networking sites like YouTube, Facebook,
and Twitter.

cases rewritten entire political landscapes.”

4. In the past, media provided a
filter. If something was on
the front page or the
evening news, it was
considered important. If
not, it wasn’t. Yet today,
anyone can broadcast—
whether it be a distraught
mother or a crusading
journalist. Nobody needs
to ask for permission, even
in a corrupt, authoritarian
country.

6. • “Having a constant focus on what is happening
somewhere else effectively removes people from
staying connected in the face-to-face interactions
they could be having, or are having at the moment,
as those interactions get constantly interrupted by
electronic signals from the phone or computer,” Ross
told the Daily in an email. “Social media can provide
the appearance of connection without an authentic
connection.”

7. • Based on research, nearly 65 percent of
people use social media to search for gifts and
more than 90 percent of those surveyed said
they trusted earned media (word-of-mouth)
more than any other form of advertising.

8. Social networking has been a
source of concern among
privacy advocates around the
world. It’s certainly true that
social media sites collect and
disseminate a fair amount of
personal data about us.

15. Almost suddenly people who seldom took pictures of their
daily life encounters, began to photograph the world around
them on a daily basis, increasing and discovering a love for
photography. Some have gone even further and
consequently decided to study photography.
16. Social media sites like Twitter that impose a
character limit force users to condense their

use of textspeak. This type of shorthand
involves a whole new language of
abbreviations.

17. • This interconnection of hubs thus means that an enormous
level of traffic can be circulated between different social
media sites, and at an incredible pace. As more social
media platforms are created, the potential for this massive
interconnectivity further increases. Such is the power of
social media, and one that can be leveraged by companies
like never before for their own business advantage.
