Internet of Things - The Battle for your Home, Commute, and Life
We live in multiple worlds at any given point in time. The physical world that we live in, and the digital world that we access via multiple platforms. These 2 worlds have been influencing each other for some time now. The real world's need for communication & sharing has fueled the meteoric rise of social platforms. At the same time, easy access to phones, apps & services has made possible the seed of democracy to take root in closed countries. Still, for the most part, these worlds have been largely separate.
Now, the environment is becoming aware of us. Low cost, mass produced sensors are embedding themselves into devices of every conceivable size & shape. Mobiles have now reached an inflection point in terms of both hardware & software, providing the last mile connectivity to harness this power, leading to the creation of Internet of Things, and the rise of a contextually aware machine age.
The Internet consists of many layers. At its core, we have millions of servers & routers that provide the backbone for worldwide connectivity. Then we have billions of devices (desktop & mobile) connecting to it. Now the emergence of a new class of devices with trillions of embedded chips is fueling the rise of the Internet of Things. Simply put, IoT connects the physical world to the Internet. Combined with sensors, emerging & current network connectivity protocols, and processes designed around human interaction & behavior, IoT is already here. Soon, it will be everywhere.
The key areas that will see the most action around IoT will be Health, Home, Transport, Cities & Infrastructure, and Industry. The most conservative estimates put IoT growth at $1 Trillion+ by 2020. Services will take nearly half of the pie, hardware contributing around 35%, and the rest will be cornered by managed networks.
Users will warm up to new experiences & cost efficiences in existing services. Companies will get real time access to business state, as their devices are always connected. However, this will bring its own set of challenges for a business, as they will grapple with the issues of launching, managing, and monetising IoT services. Revenue models might change from straight sales to a subscription model instead.
BIG PLAYERS
Apple has transformed from a PC maker to a consumer goods giant. Now, its making a bigger play for becoming the gateway for your home, travel, and your health with HomeKit, CarPlay, and HealthKit respectively. Apple Pay is already here. And the Watch is coming in 2015.
Google is not far behind. It is quietly converting Nest into a smart home hub, with its SDK opened for developers recently. A number of smartwatches already run Android. Google Glass is also out there. And Honda is already putting a flavor of Android on its newest cars' dashboards.
Companies like Samsung, GE, Philips are making a bunch of devices that talk to each other. And a lot of companies have thrown their hat in the ring in a bid to own the software pie.

Internet of Things - The Battle for your Home, Commute, and Life
We live in multiple worlds at any given point in time. The physical world that we live in, and the digital world that we access via multiple platforms. These 2 worlds have been influencing each other for some time now. The real world's need for communication & sharing has fueled the meteoric rise of social platforms. At the same time, easy access to phones, apps & services has made possible the seed of democracy to take root in closed countries. Still, for the most part, these worlds have been largely separate.
Now, the environment is becoming aware of us. Low cost, mass produced sensors are embedding themselves into devices of every conceivable size & shape. Mobiles have now reached an inflection point in terms of both hardware & software, providing the last mile connectivity to harness this power, leading to the creation of Internet of Things, and the rise of a contextually aware machine age.
The Internet consists of many layers. At its core, we have millions of servers & routers that provide the backbone for worldwide connectivity. Then we have billions of devices (desktop & mobile) connecting to it. Now the emergence of a new class of devices with trillions of embedded chips is fueling the rise of the Internet of Things. Simply put, IoT connects the physical world to the Internet. Combined with sensors, emerging & current network connectivity protocols, and processes designed around human interaction & behavior, IoT is already here. Soon, it will be everywhere.
The key areas that will see the most action around IoT will be Health, Home, Transport, Cities & Infrastructure, and Industry. The most conservative estimates put IoT growth at $1 Trillion+ by 2020. Services will take nearly half of the pie, hardware contributing around 35%, and the rest will be cornered by managed networks.
Users will warm up to new experiences & cost efficiences in existing services. Companies will get real time access to business state, as their devices are always connected. However, this will bring its own set of challenges for a business, as they will grapple with the issues of launching, managing, and monetising IoT services. Revenue models might change from straight sales to a subscription model instead.
BIG PLAYERS
Apple has transformed from a PC maker to a consumer goods giant. Now, its making a bigger play for becoming the gateway for your home, travel, and your health with HomeKit, CarPlay, and HealthKit respectively. Apple Pay is already here. And the Watch is coming in 2015.
Google is not far behind. It is quietly converting Nest into a smart home hub, with its SDK opened for developers recently. A number of smartwatches already run Android. Google Glass is also out there. And Honda is already putting a flavor of Android on its newest cars' dashboards.
Companies like Samsung, GE, Philips are making a bunch of devices that talk to each other. And a lot of companies have thrown their hat in the ring in a bid to own the software pie.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is taking the world by storm as interconnected devices fill workplaces and homes across the US. While the intention of these devices is always to make our lives easier, their ability to connect to the internet turns them into ticking time bombs, lying in wait until their weaknesses can be exploited by opportunistic hackers.
Personal data breaches are skyrocketing in America, increasing by 60% in the last year and by 157 percent since 2015. As our interconnectivity grows, so do the opportunities that our technology will be hacked. Since every IoT device is connected to the internet, each one is vulnerable to external access if not secured properly. In the rush to manufacture these devices and get them onto the market, security has been an afterthought which needs to be urgently addressed if the number of yearly data breaches is to be tackled.
Not only is the actual security of IoT devices under constant debate but recent news stories surrounding both the Amazon Alexa and Google Home products -- central machines to most home IoT set-ups -- show that even when used properly, the security implications of these devices can be suspect.
Though many expect IoT to revolutionize our everyday lives, the potential holes they open up in our security infrastructures could become an insurmountable problem if not dealt with soon.
Workplace IoT
IoT in the workplace can range from integrated systems such as air conditioning and security systems to Wi-Fi enabled coffee machines. But every point of access in a system has potential for weakness, meaning the more connected devices there are the harder it is to protect. Many believe that blockchain technology has the answer for IoT security issues due to its decentralized nature and the ability to timestamp and identify each connected device, allowing for more accurate access records and a more stable network where no central point is vulnerable.
The other key issue with workplace IoT is the necessity of regular updates to keep all devices secured. In working environments where machines are working 24/7, there is no time to take machines out of service to complete updates, meaning identified weaknesses can be left unresolved. This allows hackers multiple opportunities to exploit the insecurities in an individual device and gain access to the central network from there.
Creators of IoT devices will need to address the concerns of their consumers in order to create products which can be routinely secured and hold a high base standard of security.
Integrated homes
With an explosion of interconnected devices for the home comes a unique challenge that consumers are often completely oblivious to. Some IoT devices have no way to securely store the Wi-Fi password which connects them, meaning that a hacker who is able to gain access to this device can find the Wi-Fi password and exploit the entire network, risking data su.

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.

Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
