The swallow agrees to stay with the statue of the Happy Prince for one more night. The Prince tells the swallow about a poor boy suffering from fever and asks the swallow to bring him the ruby from the Prince's sword. Later, the Prince has the swallow bring gifts that can help other people in need, which requires sacrificing parts of his own body. In the end, both the Prince and swallow sacrifice everything to help the poor, and their acts of kindness are not recognized by the townspeople when the statue is melted down.
