Building a strong management team is the top leadership challenge for social entrepreneurs, according to a global survey. This challenge includes difficulties with external recruiting, internal leadership development, and staff retention. While social entrepreneurs are often inspirational leaders, building managerial capabilities is needed to scale an organization. Interviewed social entrepreneurs emphasized the importance of delegating and ensuring long-term stability through a professional management team, while protecting the social mission. About two-thirds of surveyed entrepreneurs rated building a senior team as a major challenge. Developing others and succession planning were also cited as difficulties. 2. Development means increasing choices, while growth just means more of the same. Development can occur without growth and growth can occur without development.
3. Economic development is part of community development by seeking to build all five community capitals, not only enhancing the economy but also the environment, social structures, attitudes and assets.

He discussed the co-op development process, which involves building consensus, governance, planning, implementation, and aftercare. He also provided examples of opportunities for co-op development, such as in communities, agriculture, seniors services, and among young professionals. VER THE PAST DECADE, increasing
focus has been placed on the role that
businesses can – and should – play in
contributing to a sustainable global society.
Failure to face up to these challenges has significant costs.
Increasingly, a firm’s long-term competitiveness is
dependent on how creatively and adroitly its leaders
manage at the intersection of financial, social and
environmental objectives.
Responsibility for assuring that leaders at all levels in
the firm are ready to meet these rising expectations is
widely shared throughout the corporation, but HR
professionals, particularly those responsible for leadership
development, can be at the forefront of the effort.
To be in this vanguard, leadership development
experts must reflect on two critical questions: What
kind of leader is called for? And how do we develop
individuals with these capabilities? Since 1999 the
Aspen Institute’s Business and Society Program has
been convening experts in leadership development
from academic institutions, corporations and
professional service firms around the world, inviting
them to share insights on these questions. This article
details what we have learned so far from conversations
with these leading thinkers.
A new model for business leadership
If we are now expecting businesses to operate with a
longer-term view that takes social and environmental
impacts into account, we need a new model of
leadership to achieve that result. Typically, “new
model” leaders:
• are able to span boundaries, listen to diverse
constituencies and be willing to be altered by any of
these inputs;
• have the courage to make tough decisions in a way
that acknowledges the often conflicting
values/expectations of these constituencies;
• are enriched, not overwhelmed, by complexity and
diversity;
• build a team that is stronger than its individual parts;
• see the firm in a larger context, considering social and
environmental issues beyond the corporation’s gates;
• move beyond solving specific problems or addressing
particular needs ...

4.3 Conflicts of interest
Conflicts of interest: How to identify and treat them*
Conflicts of interest are inevitable. In anticipation of this, social enterprises and their boards should develop policies and rules of procedure
for how to address and deal with emerging conflicts of interest. As a general practice, all potential conflicts of interest should be surfaced
and shared for discussion.
Potential sources of conflicts of interest:
– Board members can gain financially from their board involvement (e.g. if the board member has an expertise that the social enterprise
requires, such as marketing or accounting)
– Board members can gain non-financially from their board involvement (e.g. a family member may be hired by the social enterprise, or if
the board member is also a beneficiary of the social enterprise, she can influence its operations to serve her own interests)
– Board members face competing loyalties and obligations (e.g. the board member serves on two social enterprises that compete in the
same market or the social enterprise is part of a governmental, regulatory or oversight body)
How to handle conflicts of interest
Board members must disclose all (potential) conflicts. If a person is conflicted in any decision, he or she should be removed from this
particular decision-making process. Conflicts as well as any direct or indirect benefits received by board members have to be disclosed in
the annual reports.
