Theatre in Elizabethan England originated in inn yards and great halls before purpose-built playhouses were constructed. Civic authorities in London disapproved of plays being performed in streets and inn yards due to large crowds gathering. The first playhouses attracted audiences from all social classes except Puritans. While drama from Shakespeare and his contemporaries is now viewed as a great artistic achievement, players were seen as criminals in their own time and subject to arrest.
