Spoke to a room packed with enthusiastic students about starting up, the usual buzz that surrounds this phenomenon and how reality is different - well, a bitch.
This presentation helps us to look at professional networking from a more friendly and informal perspective. What works when you're looking for a job? What doesn't work?
The presentation starts off with a set of premises such as 'a friend is more likely to help you than a non-friend when looking at your resume' - a set of facts/assumptions that help drive the argument of corporate pick-up lines forward. We then discuss a set of lines that were used successfully to start a normal conversation, and we look at the common elements that help us start conversation with complete strangers. This can, in essence, be used to create new friendships (note 'friendships' rather than 'professional connections') which lead to new and exciting opportunities.

I've been teaching entrepreneurship to designers for just over a year now, but I've been amazed at swift and powerful the results are. Designers feel able to participate in hard product discussions, uncover and promote insights to improve the business model and even make better decisions about their personal life, from salary negotiation to budget making. That's bc entrepreneurship is a microcosm of business, simple yet complete. Along with technology and user research, business must be a common core in design education. Entrepreneurship is the best way to do it.
Keynote Address by Marc Stoiber - Ready! Fire! Aim!Social Media Camp
Ready! Fire! Aim!
No, social is not going to save the world of marketing – no more than online, ambient, guerrilla or content did. Social is just a tactic (albeit a very good one). Unfortunately, marketers have a penchant for new tactics - many have jumped wholeheartedly into social without thinking it through, and many have paid a high price.
What will save marketing is refocusing on why your product deserves to live, and why consumers should care. Call it the brand, call it the essence, call it what you will. It’s the stuff that sets you apart from, and above the competition.
So how do you build an effective brand, and then use social to amplify it properly? That’s what I’m here to discuss.
