The Future of Communication

                              Denise Taw / Spring 2010
Introduction

Communication has always been the basis of human kind’s search to better
understand ourselves, as well as to make connections with others. In the age of
technology, urbanization and globalization, communication has been the sole
base that has sparked off these trends, amongst others.

We now hope to use a simple process in order to predict how communication and
connectivity will evolve, impacting our creative and everyday lives. Through the
perspective of organizations, communities and individuals, the exploration of
these examples aim to filter out trends that are already happening, or will happen
in the near future.

Questions Considered:

•How can these trends change the way we lead our daily lives?
•What are the possible implications and after-effects of such trends?
•How has improvements in digital communication purposefully shaped the way we connect with others?
One: Escalated Collaboration

Based off the concept of sharing our personal opinions and lives thorugh social
media – there is now a shift from how people used to come up with ideas and
improve on them, to how different groups with similar ideals or aesthetics team up
and collaborate and create something that will benefit them both.

Latest off the chart is the way an idea is put out there by a team, and others create
their own content from this idea. In this sense, no one single person can take credit
for this project - because it is build on by a whole community of individuals that
allows it to improve and evolve.

                                                                                                    Lanvin x H&M designer
                                                                                                         collaboration
How it occurred:

Social Media (everyone sharing their own ideas)
<
Collaborations (two groups or more coming together to formulate an idea)
<
Contribution of Ideas (No limit to the number of people coming together to populate an idea, and it does not end.)

Possible Implications

• More information is available, forcing transparency amongst organizations and governments.
• Consumers have their voices heard through an outlet.
• Sharing becomes easier; but may pose as a problem of cluttering.
• Discovering new perspectives in each field of studies as collaborations and crowdsourcing occurs.
Two: Social Innovation for Our Future

We’re not saying the days of coporate America are gone, but it has been
evolving. The number of business sprouting up in order to combat real world
issues has led to social innovation in order to improve our daily lives.

It is the shift from how companies used to put themselves before the
consumer, to how they recognize the needs of people such as working
conditions, education, community, development, health, shortage of land and
space. In the profit and non-profit sector, they have begun to realize that
having a positive impact on society will yield good results.

How it occurred:
                                                                                   TED Talks

Possible Implications

• More people will recognize the importance, resulting in greater care and do their own part to aid this cause.
• Better cures and technology advances may result.
Three: Culturing Creativity

The concept of creativity has always been seen as something you have, or you
don’t. It has always been an uninteligible entity that has lived through generations
of innovators and creators alike. But by deeming creativity as something learnable,
there is now an emphasis on teaching and understanding creativity.

People are trying to create environments to inspire and facilitate creative
development. Governments, schools, big and small organizations start to
recognize the need for critical thinking and conceptualization of fresh ideas and
their solution is to understand, and teach it. The discussion about the explanation
of creativity, where to comes from and how to get there increases steadily and
people are getting more curious in learning how to breed creativity.
                                                                                       Sharing the concept of creativity
                                                                                          through various mediums

• Better creations will be produced through creative innovation thus making lives better.
• New job opportunities may surface with changes to the abilities of creative thinkers.
