Keynote by Alvaro Fernandez at BrainFutures 2017. Washington, DC. September 6th, 2017.
Hundreds of science labs and companies around the globe are researching and developing new ways to help brain owners be smarter, sharper and healthier. What explains this flurry of activity, and where may it be headed? Which companies, technologies and solutions are gaining the most traction so far, and what are some of the best practices for appropriate use?

Presentation by Alvaro Fernandez at the New York Neuropsychology Group (NYNG) 2017 Annual Spring Conference.
Hundreds of companies around the globe–now including Elon Musk’s Neuralink and even Facebook–are researching and developing new ways to help brain owners be smarter, sharper, and healthier. What explains this flurry of activity, and where may it be headed? What are the opportunities and challenges for the Neuropsychologists of the Future? We will structure the conversation around five emerging and thought-provoking statements:
1. There are 7.5 billion human brains out there, and everyone needs help 2. Lifelong neuroplasticity means all those brains can “sculpt” themselves 3. Mobile, sensing, wearable technologies, coupled with artificial intelligence (AI), provide a new platform to harness that neuroplasticity for good 4. Entrepreneurship and investments are fueling accelerated growth 5. Professionals are stepping up to help educate consumers and patients.

With distribution as a common bottleneck to the sustainable commercialization of innovation, value-added capital is often critical to enable steady progress in the translation of brain science from lab to life. This is especially true in non-medical areas, which lack appropriate infrastructure to commercialize and distribute innovative solutions. What can innovators learn from Discovery’s investment in Lumosity, AAA’s partnership with Posit Science, and Emotiv’s Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign?

Opening Session by Alvaro Fernandez, SharpBrains.
Description: Scientific, technological and demographic trends have converged to create a new $265m market in the US alone: serious games, software and online applications that can help people of all ages assess and train cognitive abilities. Alvaro Fernandez will provide a Bird’s Eye View of the science, market segments and trends, competitive landscape, and main challenges ahead, based on The State of the Brain Fitness Software Market 2009 report released in May, which included Research Executive Briefs prepared by 12 leading scientists and a survey of 2,000+ decision-makers and early adopters.
61% of respondents to the survey Strongly Agreed with the statement “Addressing cognitive and brain health should be a healthcare priority.” But, 65% Agreed/Strongly Agreed with “I don't really know what to expect from products making brain claims.” In this session, Alvaro will publicly unveil the new book The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness: 18 Interviews with Scientists, Practical Advice, and Product Reviews, To Keep Your Brain Sharp, co-authored by neuropsychologist Dr. Elkhonon Goldberg and himself, aimed at helping consumers and professionals understand and navigate this growing field.

How can innovators leverage crowdfunding and strategic investments to ...SharpBrains
- Chair: Matthew Bishop, US Business Editor and New York Bureau Chief of The Economist, YGL Class of 2005
- Dan Fox, Senior VP Corporate Development at Discovery Communications

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
3. 1) 7.5 billion human brains need help to thrive in the digital age
2) Lifelong neuroplasticity means those brains can be enhanced
3) Mobile, sensing, wearable technologies, coupled with AI,
provide a new platform to harness that neuroplasticity
4) Entrepreneurship and investments are fueling accelerated
growth
5) Professionals are stepping up to help ensure appropriate use
Five reasons the future of brain enhancement is digital,
pervasive and (hopefully) bright
15. 1) Everyone has a brain
2) Professionals will play a key role in
expanding the brain/ mental health pie
3) What is the low-hanging-fruit today?
