The French Revolution was caused by several factors including financial troubles that led the government to tax the lower and middle classes more, resentment of the privileges of the nobility and clergy, and Enlightenment ideas of equality, liberty, and democracy spreading among commoners. Dissatisfaction grew as poor harvests led to high bread prices and widespread hunger. In 1789, the commoners stormed the Bastille prison, starting the French Revolution.
