The flag of the United States has changed over time as new states have joined the union. Originally in 1777, the flag had 13 red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue field representing the original 13 colonies. Now, the flag has 50 stars and 13 stripes, with the 50 stars representing the current 50 states. While the colors were not initially given meaning, they later came to symbolize purity (white), bravery (red), and justice (blue). The stars represent the heavens and divine goals, while the stripes symbolize the rays of light from the sun.
