                         American Flag – It’s History
In these days of super patriotism, it is easy to take our nation’s emblem for
granted. Few other countries embrace their flag as lovingly as the American
people, so it makes sense to acknowledge the interesting history of the Star-
                              Spangled Banner.

American Flag Facts
Few Americans know that the exact design requirements of Old Glory are
specified in The Code of Laws of the United States of America (U.S.C.), although
these specifications apply only to flags made by or for the federal government.
Also, the flag’s colors are specifically required to be “White,” “Old Glory Red,”
and “Old Glory Blue” as specified in The Color Association of the United States
                       Standard Color Reference of America.

According to Title 4, Part 2 of the U.S.C., a new star must be added to the flag
whenever a new state is admitted to the union. Although credit for the current
50-star flag design was given officially to the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry, the
same basic design was submitted and popularized by a high school student in
1958. The result of a class project, the flag designed by 17-year-old Robert G.
Heft received only a grade of B-minus. After his design was adopted in 1959 by
presidential proclamation, Heft’s grade was raised to an A.

American Flag Facts
Some may be surprised to learn that the American flag flies in some unusual
locations. For example, in 1909, explorer Robert E. Peary planted an American
flag at the North Pole. The Stars and Stripes is also one of 12 flags flying at the
ceremonial South Pole. The flag even flies beyond the bounds of the earth.
Astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong planted the flag on the moon in
1969, and five more were planted during ensuing moon landings. Also, a
representation of the flag stands on the planet Mars on NASA’s Curiosity rover.

                               The 1st American Flag
Another interesting but generally unknown fact is that the Stars and Stripes was
not the country’s first flag. After the Declaration of Independence, the
Continental Congress chose to fly the “Continental Colors.” This combination of
the British flag with American red and white stripes is considered by historians
to be the first American flag. The current concept, which includes white stars,
was established a year later in 1777. Since that date, the flag’s design has been
updated officially 26 times in order to add stars.

Still, despite the changes, the flag has become a powerful symbol not only of
America, but the values for which America stands.
