This tells the story of the War in Heaven, the fall of Lucifer, the Creation, and the fall of Man with an emphasis on the symbols of the snake (evil), the fruit (temptation), and the fig leaf (shame/secrets/masks). Final slides make connections to Faust, Alladin and introduce the absolute phrase giving students an opportunity to use the absolute phrase to describe scenes from "The Monkey's Paw."
Notes at the bottom of each slide provide narration, commentary, and questions for analysis--they are viewable in PowerPoint if you download the presentation.
I've used this slideshow with 9th, 12th, and AP Lit students adapting it to introduce short story units emphasizing allusion, Frankenstein, Paradise Lost, and Heart of Darkness.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
What do see here? What do these images mean to you? What do they remind you of?
Before there was Earth or man, there was an angel who lived in Heaven by the name of Lucifer. Also known as the Son of the Morning (Luz for light) he was one of the most powerful, most charismatic, most beloved angels. As powerful and beautiful as he was, he was also very proud and believed he deserved even more. He sought to overthrow God and rule Heaven himself. He wasn’t satisfied being an angel; he wanted to be like God.
Lucifer gathered a host of angels on his side and together they fought to overthrow God and ascend his throne. This is called the War in Heaven.
Lucifer was powerful and he had many angels on his side. It was a horrible battle, but there was another angel, Michael, who was even more powerful.
Michael, also known as the archangel, fought along side God and thrust Lucifer and all his followers out of Heaven.
Having lost the War in Heaven, Lucifer is depicted here falling from Heaven to Earth. If you have ever heard the phrase “Fallen Angel” it refers to this. Lucifer, and his angels fell from Heaven.
Michael the Archangel, flanked by other angels, is shown here condemning Lucifer to an eternity in Hell. Notice how similar Lucifer and Michael look—nearly equal in power and appearance—except that one is in darkness, the other in light.
Meanwhile, God created Man. In this famous painting my Michelangelo, The Creation of Adam, God is seen giving life to his Adam—the first man on Earth. This painting is part of a larger fresco found on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
In this painting, God introduces Adam and Eve into the Garden of Eden. He tells them that it has been created for them and they can eat any of the fruit from any tree except for one. They must not eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, God says, for in the day they eat of the fruit of that tree they will die. What do you notice about Adam and Eve? What’s unusual about them? (They’re adults, but they’re naked. They’re innocent and like children have no concept of what it is to be naked. They’re not even looking at each other, but at God, the way children would, though naked, wouldn’t even notice each other but would have eyes only for their father.)
Lucifer, now known as Satan or the Devil. Has been banished to Hell and is determined to do whatever he can to foil God’s plan. He takes the form of a snake and decides to enter the Garden of Eden.
Satan tempts Eve with the fruit. Anything tempting here? (No, he looks terrifying. Why would Eve want to take anything from a monster like him?)
Until Satan whispers in her ear how she won’t really die, but will have knowledge. If she eats the fruit, he says, she will no longer be like an innocent (ignorant) child, but will be like her Father and know the difference between good and evil. This is desirable to Eve and now she is tempted. Notice how much more appealing the fruit looks and how harmless the snake appears in this picture compared to the last one.
Eve eats the fruit and gives it to Adam to eat.
What do you notice about Adam and Eve that is different from the other pictures of them that you’ve seen? How can you tell they’ve both eaten the fruit? (They no longer behave as children but look like two adults with desires and passions and a clear knowledge of what it is to be naked together.)
Because they ate of the fruit, they were cast out of the Garden and an angel is sent to guard the entrance to the Garden so they can never return. What is the significance of their wearing clothes? Remember God said they would die if they ate of the fruit. How did they die?
This is a wider shot of the previous scene. Notice the contrast between light and dark. Remember how Lucifer lost the War in Heaven and became a Fallen Angel? This picture depicts another fall—the Fall of Man. Compare this picture to the one we saw of Michael the Archangel condemning Lucifer to an eternity in Hell. How are they similar? How are they different?
Michael the Archangel, flanked by other angels, is shown here condemning Lucifer to an eternity in Hell. Notice how similar Lucifer and Michael look—nearly equal in power and appearance—except that one is in darkness, the other in light.
What role does the snake play in the story of the Garden of Eden? What does the snake symbolize (evil)? Who is the snake in the story of Faust (Mephistopheles, Satan)? What about the story of Aladdin (the uncle)? What role does the apple play in the story of the Garden of Eden? What does the apple symbolize (temptation)? What is the apple in the story of Faust (knowledge, Gretchen)? What about the story of Aladdin (power, wealth)? What role does the fig leaf play in the story of the Garden of Eden? What does the fig leaf symbolize (shame, secrets)? What is the fig leaf in the story of Faust (Faust’s willingness to do anything to get what he wanted)? What about the story of Aladdin (the uncle pretends to want the best for Aladdin)?
In one sentence, who can tell me the story of Faust? How does this story compare to the stories we just heard of the Fall of Lucifer and/or the Fall of Man? What about the story of Aladdin? How are these three stories similar? How are they different?
