2. ‘The devil made me do it’ is a mixed documentary based upon the inspiration
idols in the music industry create to the fans and the effect this can have on the
fans of idols.
This documentary is specifically looking at Marilyn Manson and cases prosecuted
against him because of the effect he has on his fans because of his image and his
lyrics, he claims the media are just looking for a stereotype to blame and the
punk rock would fit the picture for the public to blame.
When Manson is on camera he is shown from a low angle close up this connotes
power over the audience and also
creates a sense of a god like figure
in which the media are trying to
create by showing a bad image of
Manson.

3. The media also try and blame Manson for a stabbing on school students in
America which they said was committed by students trying to impersonate
Manson by dressing like him and also added white contact lenses. It turned out
they didn’t dress like him or even listen to his music the media were just
looking for an easy target to blame.
Manson was also prosecuted for a case in Italy were three teenagers stabbed a
nun to death. This small town was said to be quiet and there was no cases like
this for a long time, this led to the immediate prosecution of Manson. When
the small town is shown there is a extreme long action shot of the village.

4. The viewers are then cut to a
Scene introducing them to a character known
to be sister Maria’s Brother the scene
Surrounding him is the crime Scene. Its
dull and looks to be Badly weathered the
camera angle on sister Maria's brother is
Slightly lower than usual this Signifies
weakness or Inability, this has been perfected by the media to create a more
negative image of Manson.
This is during the middle of the documentary where the line of argument is
present that it is Manson’s influences and behavior that caused the outbreak.
The media attempt to create a feel of weakness to of Manson’s influences‘
when Manson holds concerts the crowd are always shown through a high
angle shot and Manson is always either followed or shown through a low
angle shot showing he has power over the ant like crowd.

5. Narrative Structure & Themes
The devil made me do it is of a Linear Narrative meaning there is a typical
beginning, middle and end of a crime documentary which is presented with the
beginning being the audience are introduced to the crime but we are not
revealed the murderers. The middle is where the line of argument is added
which is that Manson’s behavior has a negative effect on his audience.
And the end being case solved the murderers are caught.

6. Camera Work & Mise-en-scene
The camera work depends on the characters present, when the camera is on
Manson it is either following him or high angle shot, when on the crowd to

camera shots which would be panning shots.

The mise-en-scene is either quite natural
Or dark and morbid depending on the
Scenery. Archive footage is also used and
Also following reenactments into teenagers

This creates a sense of no privacy because
We as the audience are entering the creators private area’s.

7. Sound & Editing
There are lots of added sounds throughout the documentary that are used
such as voiceovers throughout Manson’s concerts. And when the girls are
talking about their confessions there is a stabbing sound in the background
and church bells ring also.
Editing such as shot reverse shots between Marilyn Manson and his fans at his
concerts.
When fans respond to Manson there is cross-cutting. their are added names
when new characters are introduced.
