The devil made me do It is a mixed
documentary, It had observations, archive
footage and a variety of interviews.
3. Narrative
In the beginning of the documentary
there was Marilyn Mansons
fans/followers which sets the story of
how it is related. Also the many peaceful
establishing shots of the town show the
difference between the Marilyn Manson
concert and the quiet town.
In the middle it shows the murder that had
taken place and shown what happened to the
town and he people it involved. This is where
the argument takes place and Marilyn
Manson is shown negatively and according to
the town he is the reason the murder
happened.
In the end it concludes and shows the own
normal and what happened to the girls who
committed the crime. It also shows
teenagers and Marilyn Manson in a
negative light and includes a montage of
teenagers smoking, drinking and kissing.
4. Camera Angles
• Mid shot of a phone box when the girl is speaking to the police
• High angles of the city when the confession is taking place which makes It look
eerie.
• Zoom in of some inverted crosses graffited on the wall.
• Archive footage is wobbly which makes the audience feel like they are there
• Close up’s of religious statues
• Low angle shots looking up to Manson which makes him look powerful
• High angle shots of the audience from Mansons point of
view which makes him look like he is controlling his fans.
• When interviewing Manson the light falls on
one half of his face, leaving the other half dark
which makes It seem like he has a split personality.
5. Mise en scene
The lawyer on the train is dressed
in red and stands out by showing
she is power dressed and looks
very powerful.
Montage of teenagers drinking,
smoking and kissing reinforces the
message that Marilyn Manson is a
bad influence as the footage is
filmed at his concert.
6. Sound
• Eerie music when the girl is
confessing to the murder.
• Non – diagetic sound such as
heartbeat used to create
meaning as the girl is getting
more nervous as the time goes
by whilst she is confessing
hense why the heartbeat
sound is getting faster and
faster.
7. Editing
At both the beginning and end of the documentary montages
are used to show Manson and teenagers in a negative light.
Shot reverse shot is used at Mansons concert to show the
strong relationship he has with his fans.
In the interviews cut aways are used as well as slow motion
during some concerts.
