Victoria Slater appears to be the only kind character in the story. While not entirely innocent, she shows glimpses of goodness by being happy to see her grandfather alive, unlike her cruel mother Amelia. Amelia is described as the prime villain who has been taking care of her father only for his possessions, as she eagerly awaits his death to inherit them. She shows no remorse over his death and instead focuses on getting mourning costumes. In contrast, Victoria questions whether they are "stealing" from her grandfather, indicating she does not share her mother's evil nature.
The Rover and important themes marriage, prostitutionGoswami Mahirpari
and more – to my soul, than to obey those unjust commands.” – Florinda (The Rover, I. i. 18-22)
In this first quote, Florinda expresses her opposition to arranged marriages. It was a common
practice in the seventeenth century, especially among the higher classes as it is the case, that the
father would be the responsible for the choice of husband. The fact that Florinda is openly against
this practice proves that women were not as submissive as they might seem, but there was no other
honorable way for them to be finantially independent, for they depended first on the father – or the
brother, as in the play – and then on the husband.
Related to this vision, here follows another quote to illustrate it:
“I hate Vincentio, sir, and I would not have a man so dear to me as my brother follow the ill customs
of our country and make a slave of his sister […]” – Florinda (The Rover, I. i. 62-65)
After stating her position about the matter of arranged marriages, Florinda compares this practice to
slavery. The relationship between a male member of the family with the daughter or the sister is
shown as similar to that of the master and the slave, respectively. In that sense, marriage is a mere
transaction in which one part (the family, embodied in the figure of the brother in The Rover)
obtains profit by selling or using the services of the other part (the lady).
It is suprising that a female character declares her position on these matters so severely and openly,
since that was not very lady-like. However, it is important to highlight that women in the play have
very strong personalities and step out of the standards of womanhood to some extent.
The other vision of marriage that will be analysed is that of marriage as the dead of love.
“Hold, hold, no bug words, child. Priest and Hymen! Prithee add a hang-man to ‘em to make up the
consort. No, no, we’ll have no vows but love, child, not witness but the lover; the kind deity enjoin
naught but love and enjoy! Hymen and priest wait still upon portion and jointure. Love and beauty
have their own ceremonies. Marriage is a certain bane to love as lending money is to friendship;
I’ll neither ask nor give a vow – though I could be contente to turn gipsy and become a left-handed
bridegroom, to have the pleasure of working that great miracle of making a maid a mother, if you durst
venture. ‘Tis upse gipsy that, and if I miss, I’ll lose my labour” – Willmore .

The story revolves around its two central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and his treacherous ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

4. Grandfather{Mr. Abel}
Mr. Abel is an easy going old man. A widower for some long time,
he has learnt the world and its multiple faces. He is a practical man
yet a little given to drinking and jollity. Even at the age of seventy
he is jovial and active. There is nothing that could stop him from his
ways. He is proud of being Abel Merryweather. It has been a pain
for him to accept the fact that he is just a lot unwanted. When he
saw in front of his eyes how much despised he was and how
quarrelsome his daughters were and how cunningly they
have hidden their hatred for him for long. Abel Merryweather was
a man of his forebodings – he appears to be iron hearted for a
while in destroying his will and shameless in getting married at the
age of seventy. Surprisingly, it is hard to see why this amiable old
man was equally despised/hated by all his dear ones.
5. Amelia Slater was evil incarnated. The prime villain of the
play, she had been taking care of her father for his
possessions. She had been looking after her father for the
last three years and was just waiting for the most
wonderful happening in his life – his death. It is amazing
that a daughter goes without any feeling for her father’s
death. Not only that she didn’t get a doctor for her
father on finding him ‘dead’ but also she left him to die
there and went for her mourning costumes. It is the height
of hypocrisy that she blames Victoria for being
gallivanting while she was herself breathing the air of her
father’s bereavement. Her pinching the bureau, the
slippers and the clock are the least examples of her
hardheartedness.
Mrs. Slater {Amelia}
6. Mr. Slater
Henry Slater is the husband of Amelia.
He a stooping heavy man with
drooping moustache. He is wearing
black tailcoat, grey trousers, a black tie
& a bowler’s hat .
7. Mrs. Jordan
Mrs. Jordan is a stout and complacent
woman. she is impassive and always has
an irritating air around her. she is very
witty and sharp. she holds the capacity to
drive a hard bargain over things to gain
possession. she is a too greedy person who
takes every opportunity to criticise the
slaters and finally decides to take.
8. Mr. Jordan
Ben is the husband of Mrs. Jordan. He is rather a
jolly man, accustomed to be humorous, but at
present trying to adapt himself to the regrettable
occasion.
9. Victoria
Victoria Slater appears to be the only character in the story
with a heart. She is not entirely innocent yet there are
glimpses of goodness in her. She was happy to see her
grandfather alive for some hazy reasons while it is she
whom her mother blames for being gallivanting. If the
mother, Amelia, were right in blaming her, Victoria too was
a product of the same prototype. One thing is however
certain that Victoria had a delicate heart that had soft and
gentle feelings for her grandfather. She asks her parents,
‘are we stealing them?’ which means she was not as evil as
