The Maschio Angioino castle in Naples, Italy was built in 1279. It had underground tunnels, one used to store grain and another to hold prisoners. Guards noticed fewer prisoners and strange noises coming from a well in one tunnel. One night, they saw a huge crocodile emerge from the well. Fishermen were too afraid to go into the sea. The king had the crocodile captured by baiting it with a horse's leg attached to an anchor. It was killed by arrows and harpoons aimed at its weak point, its jaw. The embalmed crocodile was then displayed in the castle.

The crocodile of Maschio Angioino
The Maschio Angioino castle in Naples, Italy was built in 1279. It had underground tunnels, one used to store grain and another to hold prisoners. Guards noticed fewer prisoners and strange noises coming from a well in one tunnel. One night, they saw a huge crocodile emerge from the well. Fishermen were too afraid to go into the sea. The king had the crocodile captured by baiting it with a horse's leg attached to an anchor. It was killed by arrows and harpoons aimed at its weak point, its jaw. The embalmed crocodile was then displayed in the castle.

significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in

- 1. The crocodile of Maschio Angioino
- 2. The Maschio Angioino was erected in 1279 during Carlo Angiò’s realm, as fortress. Outside it was partially surrounded by the sea and one- sidedly by a moat full of water. There were two underground ditches: one to preserve corn and the other to close in prisoners, and there the legend was born.
- 3. As the guards found less prisoners in the ditch, they began to become suspicious and to think that the prisoners had found an escape getway to the beach. So, they increased the controls.
- 4. In a tunnel there was a well, so the guards began to think that there was someone inside because the people who took the water disappeared, there were strange noises and you could see splashes of water. The commander put a guard in front of the well to find out who was there…
- 5. One night they decided to do an experiment: a soldier put down a container and began to wait. Suddenly they saw the wide open mouth of a huge crocodile. The fishermen did not go down into the sea any more from terror! People thought that the crocodile had arrived following an Egyptian boat. The king ordered to capture it, then they attached a horse's thigh to an anchor and dropped it into the pit; the crocodile seized it and remained captured by the enormous hook.
- 6. However, the crocodile was still alive and dangerous, so the guardians started throwing arrows and harpoons to defeat him; he resisted, but he had a weak point, the jaw. In fact, he could not chew the anchor, therefore he swallowed it, so he died.
- 7. The king decided to embalm the crocodile and to expose it in the castle both to demonstrate the capture of the dangerous animal and to reassure people.
