This paper explores the concept distance of analogies and its correlation with perceived creative value. It analyzes analogies collected on Twitter to categorize them based on source-target concept distance and commonness. A survey finds that analogies with more distant source-target pairs are rated as more creative than closely related pairs. The aim is to understand how analogies influence creative ideation and build computational support for design by analogy. However, questions remain around how this could practically influence idea quality, defining creative value, expanding the classification methodology, and oversimplification of conclusions from the literature.

Datascope: Designing your Data Viz - The (Iterative) ProcessMollie Pettit
This talk was given to a Data Visualization course, which is part of the Masters of Science in Analytics program at the Northwestern School of Engineering.
It walks through:
- Why to visualize data
- A common (linear) approach to data problems
- A look at a problem in an ambiguos world, and why the linear approach does not always get one to their ideal end point
- A better (iterative) approach
- how to get started on a project through the important practice of brainstorming
-An informal project example. In this example, an iterative approach to the visualization helped the creator to gain new insights which changed her story's focus all-together.
-A case study of a project done for Procter & Gamble. In this example, an iterative approach redirected us from a more complicated network graph of the company (which we initially assumed would be an end-result) to displaying data in a simpler way (e.g. bar charts), which was more ideal for the client.
-Another case study. In this example, an iterative approach led us to create a less obvious / more creative visualization that stressed the things that were most important to the client. Nearly every single iteration step (all of which were shown to the client) are shown in the slides.
It ends with a reminder that doing is better than planning. You really can't learn what your ideal end-product will be until you get started; while working, one must constantly ask questions and gain feedback, and refine the approach accordingly.

Improving Understanding of Web Archive Collections Through Storytelling - PhD...Shawn Jones
With web archives, journalists find evidence and information to back up their stories, historians store information for later users, and social scientists can study the actions of humans during specific time periods. These different groups gain value not only from creating their own collections but from using the collections of others. Web archive collections store the content that would otherwise be lost. As users, we currently have no efficient way of understanding what is in each collection without manually reviewing all of its items. Web archives intentionally consist of different versions of the same document. With these multiple versions, we can watch the evolution of a single resource over time, following the changes to an organization or how the public learns the details of an unfolding news story. As aggregations of archived web pages, or mementos, these collections become resources unto themselves. While past work has used mementos for studying how web resources change over time or evaluated the changes to various industries, there is still theoretical work to be done in improving the usability of web archive collections. Our goal is to help collection creators and the public at large to make better use of these collections through improvements to collection understanding. We build upon the work of AlNoamany by using visualizations from social media storytelling. Our goal is to produce a story for each web archive collection. Each story consists of representative mementos selected from the web archive collection that are then individually visualized as surrogates (e.g., screenshots, cards containing a summary of the page). This solution has the benefit of using visualization paradigms familiar to users. In this work, we provide background on the problem, analyze previous work in this area, and highlight our preliminary work before providing a plan for future research.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

burning coal by fanning it, it'll only get worse” @IbnAther)
• Impossible relationships: mapping used expressly to denote an
impossibility (“Sleeping on Sunday nights is like a giraffe barking, it’s
impossible” @1DTMHUpdate)
• Monotonic relationships: circular mappings (“Dennis Rodman being
an Ambassador for the United States is like having Dennis Rodman as
an Ambassador for the United States” @birbigs)

24. This paper: one way to establish the
concept distance of analogies, and its
correlation with the ascription of
creative value
25. Aim: to understand if and how analogies
influence the quality and variety of
creative ideas, and to build
computational support systems that
facilitate Design-by-Analogy
27. FAQs
1. It is not completely clear to me how this could be used to influence the
quality of ideas in ideation
2. A distinction should be made between the judgment of whether an
analogy is creative and the creative value of that analogy
3. I think “creative value” needs to be carefully dissected, and asked about
in context and piece by piece
4. While many of the examples are funny, they are also often a bit offensive
or controversial to one group or another
5. The method needs to be detailed and expanded for all categorization and
classification components in the paper
6. The statement that “distant analogies seem particularly useful for
creativity” seems oversimplified from the literature
