The document discusses developing a topic model to classify levels of self-disclosure on Twitter as general, medium, or high disclosure. It aims to analyze the relationship between self-disclosure behavior and frequency of conversations in Twitter data over time. The topic model is applied to conversations containing personal or secretive information shared to build relationships or get social support.
Topic and text analysis for sentiment, emotion, and computational social scienceAlice Oh
The document discusses research being conducted on topic modeling, computational social science, and analyzing sentiment and emotions. It provides an overview of recent works on topic modeling and modeling topic hierarchies. It also discusses research on analyzing aspects and sentiments of online reviews and analyzing social aspects of emotions and self-disclosure behaviors in Twitter conversations.
Hierarchical aspect and sentiment model, Context-dependent conceptualisationAlice Oh
This document summarizes two papers presented by Alice Oh:
1) A hierarchical aspect-sentiment model that uses a recursive Chinese restaurant process to discover a hierarchy of aspects and associated sentiments from reviews without supervision. It achieves sentiment classification accuracy comparable to other models.
2) A context-dependent conceptualization approach that conceptualizes words and concepts based on the semantic context. It outperforms traditional topic modeling in tasks like measuring word similarity, expanding frame elements, and matching ads to queries based on concept similarity.
The document describes research being conducted at KAIST University in Korea on topic modeling and sentiment analysis of user generated content. Specifically, it discusses:
- Research at the Users & Information Lab at KAIST focuses on topic modeling techniques like LDA and HDP, as well as sentiment analysis of reviews, tweets, and other online content.
- The researchers developed the Aspect Sentiment Unification Model (ASUM) to automatically discover aspects and corresponding sentiments in reviews through an extension of LDA.
- Experiments applying ASUM analyzed reviews from Amazon and restaurants from Yelp to identify product attributes and opinions expressed toward different aspects.
Agenda Setting Theory suggests that media can influence the importance of topics in the public consciousness by the amount of coverage and emphasis they give to certain issues. The theory was developed by Maxwell McCombs and expanded on by scholars like Everett Rogers, James Dearing, and McQuail and Windahl who studied how media coverage can affect public perception of what the most important issues are.
A Computational Analysis of Agenda Setting TheoryAlice Oh
The document discusses using computational methods to analyze agenda setting theory in media. It describes collecting a large corpus of online news articles and social media data to automatically identify important issues and measure how media coverage correlates with audience interests over time. The study also examines how issue relevance, uncertainty, and the tone of news articles may influence audience responses like commenting and sharing behavior.
Boston Dataswap Topic Modeling by Alice OhAlice Oh
This document provides an overview of topic modeling and computational social science. It begins with defining topic modeling and its applications in natural language processing. The document then discusses how topic models can be used to analyze large corpora of text data like Twitter conversations to discover latent topics and emotion dynamics. Examples are given of applying topic models with domain knowledge to model different emotions and analyzing emotion transitions between users in conversations. The document highlights some open research questions around defining influence between users based on emotional expressions.
This paper explores the concept distance of analogies and its correlation with perceived creative value. It analyzes analogies collected on Twitter to categorize them based on source-target concept distance and commonness. A survey finds that analogies with more distant source-target pairs are rated as more creative than closely related pairs. The aim is to understand how analogies influence creative ideation and build computational support for design by analogy. However, questions remain around how this could practically influence idea quality, defining creative value, expanding the classification methodology, and oversimplification of conclusions from the literature.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

15. Twitter conversation data
• Twitter conversation data: approx 220k dyads who “reply” to each other,
1,670k conversational chains (We now have about 5x this amount)

17. Emotion cycles
We propose that organizational dyads and groups inhabit
emotion cycles: Emotions of an individual influence the
emotions, thoughts and behaviors of others; others’ reactions
can then influence their future interactions with the individual
expressing the original emotion, as well as that individual’s
future emotions and behaviors. People can mimic the
emotions of others, thereby extending the social presence of a
specific emotion, but can also respond to others’ emotions,
extending the range of emotions present.

18. Topic model with a twist
• Dirichlet forest prior (Andrzejewski et al.)
• Mixture of Dirichlet tree distribution
• Dirichlet tree: Generalization of Dirichlet distribution
• Knowledge is expressed using Must-link and Cannot-link
primitives
• Must-link(love, sweetheart)
• Cannot-link(exciting, bored)

28. Self-disclosure Research using Twitter
• People disclose personal and secretive information
• to build and maintain interpersonal relationship
• to get social support
• Twitter is a great source for naturally-occurring, large-
scale, longitudinal data on self-disclosure behavior
• We develop a topic model for classifying self-disclosure
behavior into three categories: G (general, no disclosure),
M (medium disclosure), H (high disclosure)
• We look at the correlation of self-disclosure behavior and
frequency of Twitter conversations in longitudinal data

31. Graphical Representation of SDTM
3 sets of topics, one for G, M, and H levels
By using a topic model, we can !
-classify the levels of disclosure!
-discover topics associated with each level!
-generalize to other social media sites using the same set of seed words
32. Seed Words
• Medium level: frequent trigrams for personally identifiable
information
