The Constitution of India is the longest written constitution in the world. It has been amended over 80 times since being adopted in 1950. The constitution draws from many different sources and balances both flexibility and rigidity. It establishes India as a sovereign democratic republic with a parliamentary system. While federal in nature with power shared between the central and state governments, it also has some unitary tendencies. The constitution guarantees fundamental rights and duties to citizens and establishes directives for social, economic, and political policies and an independent judiciary.
