orn in Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, in 1903, your family moved to the South Side of
Chicago in 1910, so you grew up and went to school in Chicago. You know the city well.
This is your town.
In high school, you worked as a reporter for a small newspaper, The Daily Calumet.
After graduating, you attended the University of Notre Dame with the specific idea of becoming a
newspaperman. Consequently, you took many courses in English and history.
After graduating, you worked in New York City, but you did not like it, so you came back to
Chicago, where you got a job with the City News Bureau in 1927. This gave you the opportunity to
cover the infamous 1929 St. Valentine’s Day massacre when Al Capone’s gang gunned down seven
members of a rival organization. Even though you had to take a streetcar, you were the first reporter
on the scene.
Your crack reporting earned you a job with the Chicago Tribune covering courts. In 1934, they
offered you a job working in Washington, D.C. After accepting, you ironically observed, “From the
lofty beginnings of police reporting, I descended into politics. My progress has been steadily downward
ever since.”1
When you first arrived, Washington seemed more like a small town than the nation’s capital. You
had free run of the White House and had the telephone numbers of everyone on the cabinet. Your
stories were often critical of Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, but you always maintained a cordial
relationship with the president. He had charisma in spades, but he was also the worst snob you ever
encountered. You also cultivated a relationship with FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
Over the years, your connections and experience as a Washington insider gave you a number of
scoops. For example, in 1951, you were the first to learn that President Truman planned to fire General
Douglas MacArthur over their differences regarding Korean War strategy.
You eventually became a senior reporter and served as the executive director of the Tribune’s Wash-
ington Bureau; you built it from four reporters to about fourteen. You have worked in Washington for
more than thirty-five years and are contemplating retirement, but you have at least one Convention left
in you—particularly one in your old hometown.

Your crack reporting earned you a job with the Chicago Tribune covering courts. In 1934, they
offered you a job working in Washington, D.C. After accepting, you ironically observed, “From the
lofty beginnings of police reporting, I descended into politics. My progress has been steadily downward
ever since.”1
When you first arrived, Washington seemed more like a small town than the nation’s capital. You
had free run of the White House and had the telephone numbers of everyone on the cabinet. Your
stories were often critical of Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, but you always maintained a cordial
relationship with the president. He had charisma in spades, but he was also the worst snob you ever
encountered. You also cultivated a relationship with FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
Over the years, your connections and experience as a Washington insider gave you a number of
scoops. For example, in 1951, you were the first to learn that President Truman planned to fire General
Douglas MacArthur over their differences regarding Korean War strategy.
You eventually became a senior reporter and served as the executive director of the Tribune’s Wash-
ington Bureau; you built it from four reporters to about fourteen. You have worked in Washington for
more than thirty-five years and are contemplating retirement, but you have at least one Convention left
in you—particularly one in your old hometown.

Politics in the Age of TV vs Online Media, and the Seductive Dangers of Clickbait
While it’s generally accepted that print media has been going out of style for a while now (“What’s black and white and read all over?” Jimmy Kimmel joked at the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner. “Nothing, as it turns out” (Kimmel)), television news media hasn’t yet been fully overtaken by online news. But things aren’t looking good. PEW Research Center points out that, through the course of this election year, 48% of American adults got their news from television sources, while 34% informed themselves through online sources—including both online publications and social media feeds (“Online News on the Rise, says Pew”, 2). Compare that to the last presidential election, when 62% of the same group got their news from TV and only 18% said their primary source was online (ibid). It might be easy to dismiss the rise in online news as being the natural result of online media in general, but to do so might overlook the special relationship between these two media and their audiences. So let’s examine: do TV and online media tailor their messages differently? Do online sources court specific demographics of readers who might not otherwise get their news from the internet? Or is there simply a new generation of consumers who prefer the active experience of a website? To begin looking for an answer to these questions, let’s examine the first two weeks of September 2016, and the sharp contrast between The Lead with Jake Tapper and online newspaper Slate’s coverage of the day’s stories.
Part of this contrast might have something to do with who’s tuning in/signing on. The Lead’s audience is well-documented: according to Nielsen, the median age of Tapper’s viewers is 43, with particularly strong showings in the 36-55-year-old target audience (Nielsen Data). Further, The Lead’s audience overwhelmingly is college-educated, makes >$65,000, and tends to live in suburban areas (ibid). This isn’t entirely different from the overall audience data from CNN (on which The Lead airs), and is almost identical to that of Tapper’s lead-in, Anderson Cooper 360 (ibid). Slate’s audience, on the other hand, comprises a younger crowd (their highest demographic by far is 18-34 year olds), mostly single/independently wealthy, and lives predominantly in cities (Alexa Metrics), What does this mean? It means a clear divide in who’s consuming which; The Lead draws in middle-upper class, middle-aged family audiences (who are “politically neutral” according to Nielsen), while Slate attracts single, upwardly mobile, and self-identified “liberal” city-dwellers. But the real question is why? Why such a divide? Are these just natural consumer tendencies on the part of the audience, or does the content (and style) of the two media account for who they’re drawing in?

- 2. • Once again The Big Issue have enlarged the heads of politicians and put them over other people, in this case each of their heads have been placed over the group ABBA. • Each politician has a speech bubble where they are quoting lyrics from ABBA, that relate to Brexit. • In the background there is a faint image of a voting slip, and in the bottom right there is an small secondary image of a ballot box, which many people will be using, and have been using to cast their votes.
- 3. The Big Issue - Politics • The Big Issue focuses on issues in politics, like what’s currently going on in government, as well as social issues. They aim to inform their audience as well and entertain them. • On their political articles, the Big Issue attempt to add light humor to their main covers to draw people in and draw the focus to the issue and situation so that people are informed and want to read it. • The Big Issue have used many politicians on their cover page such as Donald Trump, David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Nicola Sturgeon, Nigel Farage and many other politicians and celebrities. Big Issue usually enlarge the heads of these politicians and put them on other peoples bodies. This makes the politicians appear like bobble heads and big headed.
