The Battle of Guadalcanal began in August 1942 when US forces landed unopposed on the island and seized the Japanese-built Henderson Field airfield, marking the start of the first major Allied offensive of the Pacific War. Over the following six months, the two sides engaged in fierce jungle fighting under extreme heat, rain and disease conditions. Despite several bloody Japanese attempts to retake the airfield, they were eventually forced to withdraw in early 1943 after sustaining heavy losses that they could no longer replace. The hard-fought American victory at Guadalcanal halted the Japanese offensive in the Pacific and marked a turning point in the war, though it came at a high cost of over 3,000 US casualties.
