The Battle of Stalingrad took place from September 2, 1942 to February 2, 1943 in the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) between German and Soviet forces. Hitler wanted to capture Stalingrad to cut off Soviet supply lines and advance further into Russia, but the Soviets launched a counteroffensive that led to the surrender of the exhausted German 6th Army, marking a major turning point in World War 2. Over 1 million soldiers from both sides fought in the brutal urban combat among the ruins of the city, which was reduced to rubble by the end of the battle.
