The Bataan Death March occurred in 1942 in the Philippines and involved approximately 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war being forced to march over 60 miles with little food or water after the Battle of Bataan. Thousands died during the march due to beatings, executions, and untreated injuries and disease. The inhumane treatment of the prisoners was considered one of the worst war crimes committed by Japanese forces. It wasn't until 2009 that Japan formally apologized to the United States for their actions during the Bataan Death March.
