FACE-IT is an effort to develop a new IT infrastructure to accelerate existing disciplinary research and enable information transfer among traditionally separate fields. At present, finding data and processing it into usable form can dominate research efforts. By providing ready access to not only data but also the software tools used to process it for specific uses (e.g., climate impact and economic model inputs), FACE-IT allows researchers to concentrate their efforts on analysis. FACE-IT is an effort to develop a new IT infrastructure to accelerate existing disciplinary research and enable information transfer among traditionally separate fields. At present, finding data and processing it into usable form can dominate research efforts. By providing ready access to not only data but also the software tools used to process it for specific uses (e.g., climate impact and economic model inputs), FACE-IT allows researchers to concentrate their efforts on analysis. Lowering barriers to data access allows researchers to stretch in new directions and allows researchers to learn and respond to the needs of other fields. FACE-IT builds on the Globus Galaxies platform, which has been developed over the past several years at the University of Chicago. FACE-IT also benefit from substantial software development undertaken by the communities who have developed most of the domain-specific tools required to populate FACE-IT with useful capabilities. The FACE-IT Galaxy manages earth system datatypes (as NetCDF), new tool parameters (dates, map, opendap), aggregated datatypes (RAFT), service providers and cool map visualizers.

Kafka Migration for Satellite Event Streaming Data | Eric Velte, ASRC Federal
ASRC Federal created the Mission Operator Assist (MOA) tool to extend human capabilities through AI/ML for NOAA. MOA ingests system log data from on-orbit satellite constellations and applies machine learning to greatly improve real-time situational awareness. MOA uses a collection of tools, including Kafka for multi-subscriber communications, all hosted through AWS Cloud Services and Kubernetes Containers for microservices. Like many traditional on-premises systems, satellite ground station operations are undergoing a renaissance as they increasingly become enabled by cloud.
During this session, the audience will learn about the satellite communications chain, and best practices and lessons learned in creating a data pipeline with Kafka for high throughput and scalability while displaying high quality situational awareness to mission operators. We will discuss our goals centered around establishing event-driven streaming for satellite logs so our machine learning becomes real-time and supporting a multi-subscriber approach for various Kafka topics. Listeners will also learn how a multi-subscriber approach using Kafka, helped us auto scale logstash based on how many messages are in the queue and other microservices.

Crowdsourcing based curation and user engagement in digital library design
Rose Holley, Special Collections Curator at UNSW Canberra discusses the findings of her research into crowdsourcing based curation. Using the digitised historic Australian Newspapers as an example, she looks at how the functionality and interface was developed in close relationship with the users, and how this led on to text correction of newspaper articles. It is nearly ten years since this pioneering project began and the motivations and achievements of the 50,000 volunteers are examined over this time. She questions how successfully the goal of improving text quality and therefore search has been achieved. She proposes that if a similar project was begun now then artificial intelligence software would be used such as OverProof post OCR correction tool to improve the quality of the text. OverProof has been trained on the manual corrections of the Australian newspaper corpus and trials demonstrate it is able to dramatically improve the quality of the corpus. Volunteer text correction could still continue afterwards for difficult text but the software would do the main donkey work, allowing users to have a better quality search.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
