The Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program aims to digitise 3 million newspaper pages from 1803-1954. The initial phase focuses on major titles from each state, with regional titles to potentially follow. The process involves scanning microfilm at an external company, optical character recognition at another external company, and quality assurance at the National Library of Australia. A pilot program is testing the workflows and systems using 50,000 pages, with the full program to launch in late 2007 and add content progressively through 2008. State libraries provide feedback and may contribute local newspaper titles in the future.
