Modern digital news and media platforms deploy automated decision-making systems intensively, with positive as well as problematic results (Helberger, 2019). Search engines, personalised newsfeeds, content moderation systems and programmatic advertising all play integral roles in the modern media ecosystem (Nechushtai & Lewis, 2019). While commonplace, these technologies have created risks to democratic processes and social cohesion through the automated curation of personalised information and the algorithmic amplification of misinformation (Helberger, 2019). Critical responses to these systems highlight a lack of transparency around their design, operation, and impacts (Rieder & Hofmann, 2020). To address these concerns researchers are developing new auditing methods (Sandvig et al., 2014) to bring transparency to these systems and inform ongoing debate and inquiry. Citizen science ‘data donation’ tools are one such methodological innovation, which like the popular algorithmic audit method (Sandvig et al., 2014), rely on direct one-on-one interaction with platforms, where results of those interactions are captured for comprehensive large-scale data analysis. These approaches rely on humans, or bots acting on behalf of a human, interacting with online services in a natural or pre-defined manner. Specific aspects of these interactions are then recorded for analysis. Unlike the audit which tends to rely on the generation of fake ‘personas’ as a locus of interaction with a web service, data donations rely on users volunteering authentic platform data generated through their regular use of these platforms, or from background ‘daemon’ processes designed to simulate everyday authentic web-based activities. The data donation project that is the focus of this tool demo, the Australian Ad Observatory, successfully recruited two thousand volunteer Australian Facebook users throughout 2021/2022, who at time of writing have donated over 800,000 observations. These volunteers downloaded a custom browser plugin that captures Facebook advertisements they encounter during their regular use of the platform on their laptop or desktop computer. The Australian Ad Observatory extends pilot research by ProPublica and NYU in examining Facebook’s algorithmic advertising model (ProPublica, 2020). This plugin works by scanning users' Facebook News feeds, distinguishing, and capturing sponsored content (and only sponsored content). The content is then paired with de-identified demographic data of the donating user and sent to a central server. Data gathered through this tool is being studied to identify the potential for discriminatory advertising, and/or advertising that violates existing Australian regulatory codes or laws. The plugin has been developed to ensure compatibility with current plugin standards for the desktop versions of leading web browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

In this report, we review the key issues and challenges associated with cancer genomics through exploration of data visualization techniques, interactions and methods, which will in-turn advance the state of the art.

Exploring the future of scholarly publishing of biodiversity data
Little more than decade back biodiversity data publishing was opportunistic and secondary spin-off activity of the biodiversity research and conservation management chain. Today, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility facilitate free and open access to over 420 million primary biodiversity data records contributed by publishers across the globe. This is an outcome of a growing realization that free and open access to biodiversity data is crucial to take informed decisions and actions for sustainable use of biotic resources and conservation of biodiversity areas. In recent past use of biodiversity data in research, conservation and management activities is on rise. However, users often complain about the low degree of ‘fitness-for-use’ of the accessible data. Most of the times potential use of data is hampered because of lack of adequate metadata, that can demonstrate the fintness-for-use of a given dataset.
To overcome this an appropriate incentivisation mechanism is essential, that can provide due credit and acknowledgement to a research groups for their efforts in authoring good metadata. In recent past a concept of ‘scholarly data publishing’ is being talked about where in both data and metadata undergo peer-review similar to other scientific publications. Pensoft publishing has launched a fresh data only journal called ‘Biodiversity Data Journal, and accepts data papers in six of its other journal titles. European aquatic biodiversity community through EU funded project ‘BioFresh’ has engaged with editors of 29 aquatic biodiversity journals to being accepting data papers. GBIF node in Columbia and South Africa are planning to kick start a journal that will publish data papers. Recently, Nature Publishing Group has announced a peer-reviewed data publishing only journal called ‘Scientific Data’. These developments announce the arrival of the new data publishing era ‘Scholarly Data Publishing’. Biodiversity science and biodiversity informatics stands to gain a lot by being on the forefront of this tide.
A Task-Centered Framework för Computationally Grounded Science Collaborations
Collaboration is ubiquitous in today’s science, yet there is limited support for coordinating scientific work. The general-purpose tools that are typically used (e.g., email, shared document editing, social coding sites), have still not replaced inperson meetings, phone calls, and extensive emails needed to coordinate and track collaborative activities. Scientists with diverse knowledge and skills around the globe could collaborate by opening scientific processes that expose all tasks and activities publicly to achieve a shared scientific question. This paper describes the Organic Data Science framework to support scientific collaborations that revolve around complex science questions that require significant coordination, entice contributors to remain engaged for extended periods of time, and enable continuous growth to accommodate new contributors as the work evolves over time. We discuss how the design of this framework incorporates principles followed by successful on-line communities. We present initial results to date of several communities that are collaborating using this framework.

Team work is an important training element of future software engineers. However, the evaluation of the
performance of collaboration among individuals is very subjective. Meanwhile, how to effectively
promote the collaboration in an academic setting is an even more challenging task. The lack of a common
standard or method for the assessment is a practical issue in software engineering projects. With the
rapid development of shared authoring environments, such as Wiki, more and more educational
institutions are studying the adaptability of such kind of collaborative platforms. In order to study the
applicability of adopting wiki-based shared authoring environments in software engineering education,
we have proposed three major research questions. By solving these problems, we try to answer some of
the most important questions in adopting shared authoring platforms in academic settings.
Extreme-scale Identity Management for Scientific Collaborations
This document summarizes research on identity management for scientific collaborations. The researchers (1) developed a model to explain variations in identity architectures across virtual organizations and resource providers, and (2) identified factors influencing identity delegation between organizations. Through interviews with 20 collaborations, they found that virtual organizations alter direct trust between users and resources, often delegating identity management tasks to the virtual organization based on trust. Their outputs include publications and guidance on implementing identity management to reduce barriers to collaboration.

In recent past use of biodiversity data in research, conservation and management activities is on rise. However, users often complain about the low degree of ‘fitness-for-use’ of the accessible data. Most of the times potential use of data is hampered because of lack of adequate metadata, that can demonstrate the fintness-for-use of a given dataset.
To overcome this an appropriate incentivisation mechanism is essential, that can provide due credit and acknowledgement to a research groups for their efforts in authoring good metadata. In recent past a concept of ‘scholarly data publishing’ is being talked about where in both data and metadata undergo peer-review similar to other scientific publications. Pensoft publishing has launched a fresh data only journal called ‘Biodiversity Data Journal, and accepts data papers in six of its other journal titles. European aquatic biodiversity community through EU funded project ‘BioFresh’ has engaged with editors of 29 aquatic biodiversity journals to being accepting data papers. GBIF node in Columbia and South Africa are planning to kick start a journal that will publish data papers. Recently, Nature Publishing Group has announced a peer-reviewed data publishing only journal called ‘Scientific Data’. These developments announce the arrival of the new data publishing era ‘Scholarly Data Publishing’. Biodiversity science and biodiversity informatics stands to gain a lot by being on the forefront of this tide.
A Task-Centered Framework för Computationally Grounded Science Collaborations
Collaboration is ubiquitous in today’s science, yet there is limited support for coordinating scientific work. The general-purpose tools that are typically used (e.g., email, shared document editing, social coding sites), have still not replaced inperson meetings, phone calls, and extensive emails needed to coordinate and track collaborative activities. Scientists with diverse knowledge and skills around the globe could collaborate by opening scientific processes that expose all tasks and activities publicly to achieve a shared scientific question. This paper describes the Organic Data Science framework to support scientific collaborations that revolve around complex science questions that require significant coordination, entice contributors to remain engaged for extended periods of time, and enable continuous growth to accommodate new contributors as the work evolves over time. We discuss how the design of this framework incorporates principles followed by successful on-line communities. We present initial results to date of several communities that are collaborating using this framework.

Team work is an important training element of future software engineers. However, the evaluation of the
performance of collaboration among individuals is very subjective. Meanwhile, how to effectively
promote the collaboration in an academic setting is an even more challenging task. The lack of a common
standard or method for the assessment is a practical issue in software engineering projects. With the
rapid development of shared authoring environments, such as Wiki, more and more educational
institutions are studying the adaptability of such kind of collaborative platforms. In order to study the
applicability of adopting wiki-based shared authoring environments in software engineering education,
we have proposed three major research questions. By solving these problems, we try to answer some of
the most important questions in adopting shared authoring platforms in academic settings.
Extreme-scale Identity Management for Scientific Collaborations
This document summarizes research on identity management for scientific collaborations. The researchers (1) developed a model to explain variations in identity architectures across virtual organizations and resource providers, and (2) identified factors influencing identity delegation between organizations. Through interviews with 20 collaborations, they found that virtual organizations alter direct trust between users and resources, often delegating identity management tasks to the virtual organization based on trust. Their outputs include publications and guidance on implementing identity management to reduce barriers to collaboration.

This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
