• A workplace that practices 5S is:
• Efficient.
• Quality.
• Clean.
• Order.
• SAFE.
• Comfortable.
• “PRESENTABLE”.
What is a place without the 5S principles?
• A workplace that doesn’t practice 5S:
• Cluttered
• Messy
• Unbearable to look at
• Dangerous
• Confusing
What are the 5 principles?
• Sort
• Set in Order
• Shine
• Standardize
• Sustain
What is SORT?
• Seiri - “Organize”
• Eliminate whatever is not needed by separating needed
tools, parts, and instructions from unneeded materials.
• Activities Involved:
• Cleaning
• Tagging
• Recycling or reassigning
• identifying ownership
• Classifying
SORT
What is SET IN ORDER?
• Seiton - “Orderliness”
• Organize whatever remains by neatly arranging and
identifying parts and tools for ease of use.
What is SHINE?
• Seiso - “Cleanliness”
• Clean the work area by conducting a cleanup
campaign.
What is STANDARDIZE?
• Seiketsu - “Standardize”
• Schedule regular cleaning and maintenance by
conducting seiri, seiton, and seiso daily.
What is SUSTAIN?
• Shitsuke - “discipline”
• Make 5S a way of life by forming the habit of always
following the first four S’s.
