Editor's Notes

  1. I chose the Movie Three Idiots which was released in 2009, it is an Indian Movie, because it is a comedy type movie yet presents a lot of insights about life. It also talks about the present education system that place too much value on competition and finally it tackles about the most important human pursuit which is self actualization.
  2. The main characters of the movie are of course, three idiots themselves: Rancho, Farhan and Raju, three engineering students who met at Imperial College of Engineering and their professor virus who took the pleasure in making their lives miserable.
  3. When I was reading the Hero’s Journey, I was able to associate it quickly with the life of Rancho in the film… Although there are some variations, Rancho’s journey follows almost the same pattern as that of the Hero’s Journey by Campbell.. At the latter part of the story, it was revealed that Rancho actually came from a poor family and parents work as helper of wealthy families. His call to adventure was when the mater’s of his parents decided to send Wangdu, his real name to College and would hold the identity of thie Son Rancho. The Mentor here is not the typical mentor character that we knew who would support the hero, rather he is also a learned man yet somewhat plays the antagonist and made Rancho’s life been more challenging in the university. His First threshold was when he arrives at the university and was mocked upon by a student leader who is in charge of initiation of students. In that scene, his brilliance was already shown by ……. He encountered a lot of challenges while in the university…He also met his 2 alies in the person of Fhran and Raju and his enemy who always tries to compete with him is Chatur and other professors whom they think that he is unconventional and were threatened by his talent.. I think one of his greatest ordeal was when his friendship with Frhan and Raju was challenged because professor Virus tries to break it by setting conditions …And his last supreme ordeal was whem they stole the test papers in from Virus home and were caught and expelled on the spot, but they earn a reprieve when Viru’s daughter went into labor and Rancho facilitated the giving birth of Vairu’s daughter. The Revisiting the mentor part I believe was when Viru’s finally awarded his pen to Rancho…To make the story short, they all graduated and Rancho went back to his hometown and because a scientist.

  5. I can very well associate my self with Rancho. First my life is also full of Comedy. I have lots experience with my college friends doing foolish things. I would also like to believe that I am of the Caregiver archetype as I am generous. Though not as brilliant as Rancho…even when I was a child, I already had the knack of inventing things… I still remember when I was young I put a small bulb on my toy truck and made it lit. Children then in our community were amazed with my invention and started following me while I showcase my invention. As of today, I still have lots of things would want to do in mind. I just could’nt find time to materialize them.
