Textual analysis title (possession)
1. Textual Analysis – Titles (Possession)
The very first title that is represented
establishes who the production company
are, the audience may be able to identify
with this and would, furthermore, be
able to be informed by who they are,
which is represented within the uses and
gratification theory. Audience may also
use this as the dyer a star theory, for
instance, watching the film as they enjoy
other realises of that production, resulting in them wanting to watch it and being a part
of the target audience due to who the film is by. The typography is in the colour white
which would connote innocence and purity; this could also connote the hero within
the film, with the black representing binary opposition and connoting the villain
(Trovdos 8 props). The letter at the start of the typography is represented in a higher
size than within the rest of the piece, though all being in capital letters, this may
represent that during the narrative dominance is going to be portrayed through the
characters. From the very beginning the audience are, nonetheless, connoted with a
horror genre as of the stereotypical colours used (black and white) as of the use of the
sharp edges on the typography.
The title appears as soon as the sequence begins which could represent the fastnesses
of the villain within the film and how quickly he may control the situation; it then
stays on screen for a couple of minutes and fades out. The audience are witnessed
with the first title for a couple of seconds, this is done so that they are able to see who
the production company are and are therefore, able to identify with them (uses and
gratification theory), it may also have been done to represent the dyer star theory as it
is the first thing portrayed. However, although the title is transitioned in a slow pace
as it appears, during the time it stays on the screen is significant as it gives the
audience enough time to identify the company. Before it gets pulled back which
would represent the disequilibrium and someone (villain) disrupting the lives of
others, the title than fades out again as it did at the start, which would portray the new
equilibrium. This represents considerable importance as the audience are able to
identify (uses and gratification theory) with the fact that there will be equilibrium
within the narrative.
The typography is represented as the
same within the first title, this would
portray that the film holds continuity
throughout as the titles represent this.
The titles are within the rule of thirds
and at an eye level angle that the
audience are used to seeing in
everyday life, portraying realism (uses
and gratification theory) within the
production, as of it being in the rule of thirds the audience are able to be directed to
this particular part of the screen as it is the first thing that people notice. The letters
are significantly close together; this may represent the dis-equilibrium being close to
people or for instance, the problem being within a family. The title is also

conventional to the theme with again the binary opposition of the colours (black and
white), which could represent the hero and the villain (Trodovs 8 props) against one
another, this is conventional to a horror genre as there is always a dis-equilibrium of
something or someone ‘evil’ (i,e the villain) changing the normality of how things
were to begin with. The transition of the title fades onto the screen in a fast tempo and
stays on screen for a couple of seconds before it fades out again, though not being on
the screen for as long as the first title, this would represent that it does not hold as
much significance as the first title did.
The title that has appeared represents
who the film is by, this would help the
audience to be informed (uses and
gratification theory) of the production
of the film. It may also connote the
dyer star theory, again explaining why
some of the audience may have
wanted to go and watch the film, as
they may like the directors. Joel
Bergvall, is represented as being the first name the audience read, this may be because
he portrayed the most importance in creating the film and would represent the
hierarchy that the film company and directors had within the production. The
transition is similar to the one represented in the second title, representing continuity
that the film upholds and potentially the ‘perfect/normal’ life the characters have. By
the production company portraying the film this way the audience are unaware of
what may occur and, therefore, it will raise suspicion (enigma) throughout the
audience. This also links to the horror genre as it is stereotypically known to
foreshadow the ‘evil’ (Villain – Trovdos 8 Props) that is always associated with
psychological horrors.
This title is represented singularly,
whereas the others were joint, this
could represent the importance of the
actress. The title is within the rule of
thirds and in the angle that we see
within our daily lives, this may be
done so that the audience would
believe that this character/actor is
like a normal everyday person, as we
are as the audience, furthermore,
portraying that the audience are able to identify (uses and gratification) with that
character. By having the name centred alone with no other writing and or other actors,
we are represented with the dyer star theory, connoting that people would have come
to watch the film because of who is playing in it. However, the titles are still
representing continuity throughout the production due to the stay in colours and the
transition that they are represented with from the beginning. Therefore, still
portraying to the genre of horror.
3. Textual Analysis – Titles (Possession)
The main title appears differently
within the opening sequence. The
transition represents a blur/ghostly like
sense, this may portray the
supernatural aspect that the villain or
hero (Trovdos 8 Props) may uphold.
Due to the supernatural aspect we are
again witnessed with the horror genre.
This may also connote a dis-
equilibrium within the narrative as the titles previously represented continuity, from
this the title also stands out and represents the significance that it would have during
the production, this would, nonetheless, create suspense within the audience (enigma
code). It is also placed with an establishing shot, which would portray to the audience
that there is potentially more to the story that what is to be seen, this would be
unreeled within the narrative as the
production goes on. The title appears
to stay on the screen for a while as it
comes onto the screen misty and in a
fog like atmosphere; this would again
represent the enigma code as the
audience are questioned with suspense
of what the title is, as it is not clear to
make out. The title is then made clear,
however, once it disappears it goes into a fog again as it began at the start, this would
again represent an equilibrium within the narrative, as things begin ‘normal’ with the
fog, the come to a dis-equilibrium when the title appears to have made itself clear,
however, is later overcome when the title goes back to how it was at the start creating
a new equilibrium. This would raise awareness and suspense (enigma) within the
audience as they may question why it
has appeared the way it has or why it
is called the possession, creating
them to want to watch on as they are
filled with unanswered questions.
There is also a representation
between the fogginess and clearness,
this may also be portrayed
throughout the production that
something is going to happen which
is unclear to the characters, nevertheless, as time progresses it becomes clearer what is
going on within the piece. By the title transitioning by fading out and in, it helps add
to the eeriness created by the production and furthermore, adds to the atmosphere.
However, the transition between them is significantly fast, though not too fast for the
audience to miss; this may portray how quickly things go wrong within the film.
Throughout this title we are furthermore, witnessed with the horror genre as of the
mysteriousness of the title and how the transition is brought up. The lighting is
nonetheless, brighter than it was in previous titles which would represent the
significance and how dramatic the ‘possession’ will be.
