Textual Analysis Music Poster
1.
2. PURPOSE OF THE PROMO POSTER
The promotional poster that this band has issued to the public,
it to do one key thing for the artist; to promote the band and the
album that is being released.
By issuing out promotional items such as; posters, digipaks,
leaflets, merchandise like tops and wristbands the band is
growing in popularity.
As well as promoting the poster MUST show the bands title,
who directed it or produced it as well as legal obligations at the
bottom, or sometimes in the corner of the posters.
This poster promotes the band ‘Artic Monkeys’ and is a retro
themed poster with modern twists.
3. KEY IMAGE
• The poster unlike some, doesn’t have the artist or instruments on the
poster, although because of the popularity of the band, they have used their
icon ‘AM’ in wave length style, which has been paired with primary colours
• This is their key image and although simple, the style of the image is
interesting, bold and inspiring, the colours are eye catching – using almost
candy tones against the strong background makes the colours pop even
more.
• By not having a key image of the band or even the main lead singer, the
band would be at risk of not selling merchandise or even albums, tickets or
shows. Yet like ‘Bastille’ the ‘Artic Monkeys’ would extremely popular in
2014 to 2015 and brought back the retro rock and roll.
• The image that is used to describe the entire band is very funky and by
using bright colours against the black could show their rock and roll sides
having some mainstream music thrown in by having primary colours and
not randomised colours and tones.
• The image is very original and pleasing to look at because of the waves.
4. BACKGROUND
• The background, as previously mentioned is black and is
consuming all the poster with the inky colour. There is no
background at all, no setting or place that could link with the
music video, yet their genre of music fits well with this colour
and style because of the rock and roll theme.
• The absence of colour from the background shows a ‘grunge’
effect to the poster as well as band. The background is plain
but very striking and bold, catching the audiences eye without
having to go over the top or even try.
5. REALISM
• The realism in this promo poster is slim, there is no actual
photos of the band or artist, the entire poster is made up on
Photoshop and animation.
• However the realism of the wave lengths to do with sound and
how sound travels through the air, is realistic in the sense that
wavelengths do look like the ‘AM’ cover, yet the band have put
an artistic spin onto the boring wavelength and added their
album name, a clever a subtle effect that leads the audience to
question the poster and look closer it .
6. TEXT & FONT
• The text on this poster is all in white, brighter by the black
background that the ‘grunge’ poster has. The style of fonts and
texts are all different on this poster, which could indicate variety or
even collaborations.
• The title of ‘Artic Monkeys’ is in their iconic slanted to the right font,
which is almost futuristic and modern for the time when ‘Artic
Monkeys’ started off. The text underneath the title is dates to a
concert or festival, giving times, dates and address of the events.
This is common on poster as it is a constant reminder for fans for
the vents or, if they cant go, a reminder that they cant. This is clever
use of advertising and is making a bigger deal of the event then
needed.
• The bottom text that is in all different fonts and styles, this is
showing who is guest starring at the vents that is advertised above,
this poster is advertising the event more than anything, throughout.
The clever use of different fonts and styles for different bands,
allows the audience to have a glimpse of what they might see as
well as genre, style and bands.
7. TAG LINE
• There doesn’t seem to be a tagline, to do with a upcoming
song or lyrics to their number one hit, but they do have at the
bottom of their poster ‘Tickets go on sale Friday 22nd Nov at
10am’. This is a key bit of information for fans.
• Throughout this poster there is a clear message that the band
are trying to get across – there is an event happening an they
are wanting fans to come and watch. The constant throughout
the poster is pressing and makes the audience more and more
interested and inclined to look into the vent more.
• Having this tag line of when tickets go on sale could be key to
some fans that didn’t know, perhaps the poster was issued to
the public before the release date was for the tickets – that
would be a brilliant marketing strategy.
8. LAYOUT
• The layout of this poster is simplistic and modern with a
funky, punky twist. The title being placed at the top of the
poster shows the audience straight off who they are and
what the poster will be about.
• The bold but smaller text that’s underneath the title is there
to give information on key events happening with the band,
this is closer to the title than to the picture – this is so the
image is not distracted by the text.
• At the bottom of the poster there is the guess stars to the
event – all in different fonts and styles, the texts are all
different and still underneath the image but not to close to
the image to distract.
• The key image is in the centre of the poster and are the key
feature of the poster – mainly because of colour.
9. COLOUR SCHEME
• The colour scheme overall is black and white – with an all black
background with all texts being white, the only thing that gets
away from these monochrome colours is the image in the centre
of the poster.
• The colours go from; yellow, pink, white, blue to green. These
colours are light and pop on the black background, as on a white
background they may have looked dull and not have stood out as
much as these colours do.
