The document summarizes drought conditions in Texas from 2010-2011 based on a presentation by Jeffrey Lindner of the Harris County Flood Control District. It notes that 2010-2011 was the driest period on record for many locations in Texas. Wildfires destroyed thousands of structures in 2011. Lake and reservoir levels were far below average. The drought ranks as the 2nd worst in Texas history and caused billions in economic losses. Rainfall deficits remain high and it may take 25-35 inches of rain to end the drought conditions. Forecasts suggest La Nina conditions may persist, which could prolong the drought.
This presentation maps demographic changes in St. Louis County, MO, between 2000 and 2010, using ModelBuilder to apportion block and tract data to the county's unincorporated areas and its 90 municipalities. Various socioeconomic changes are mapped in the 28 municipalities that lost population and saw declines in median household income.
Hurricane Sandy: a $300 billion storm; October 24, 2012. Extreme weather is becoming more common in our region. Flood events can impact human health and safety, and result in substantial costs to property and infrastructure. Geared toward municipal decision makers and concerned citizens, this forum provides on-the-ground examples of flood resilience strategies that can help Hudson Valley communities minimize risks while conserving financial resources.
Presentation by Climatologist for the Northeast Regional Climate Center Jessica Rennells for a flood management forum hosted by the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY on May 4, 2013.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
